Book A School History of the Great War

Download or read book A School History of the Great War written by McKinley and published by VM eBooks. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief history of the world's greatest war was prepared upon the suggestion of the National Board for Historical Service. Its purpose is to expand into an historical narrative the outline of the study of the war which the authors prepared for the Board and which was published by the United States Bureau of Education as Teachers' Leaflet No. 4, in August, 1918. The arrangement of chapters and the choice of topics have been largely determined by the various headings in the outline for the course in grades seven and eight. The authors trust that the simple presentation here given may aid in developing a national comprehension of the issues involved in the war; and they hope it may play some part in preparing the American people for the solution of the great problems which lie immediately before us.

Book Pictorial History of the Great War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pictorial History of the Great War Classic Reprint written by S. J. Duncan-Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Great War The need of a popular History of the Great War, which should be at once authoritative and free from bias and weak sentimentalism, is felt by all. This volume is designed to fill this need. It attempts to encompass the causes of the great conflict, the chief happening of military and political importance during the bloodiest fifty-one months of the world's history and their results and their effects upon the nations involved. An earnest endeavor has been made to take the reader through the most important phases. The limitation of this work to one volume makes the giving of exhaustive details of every incident, every battle, every siege, every advance or retreat, an impossibility. But in this very limitation lies the books greatest value. To please a tactician, chapters might be devoted to the battles along the Marne, the Somme, the Yser, at Cambrai, or to the struggle before Verdun or to the Russian campaigns. But for the reader who seeks a straightforward, circumstantial narrative of the great war, without its chief events being clouded and obscured by a multiplicity of subsidiary details, this book has been written. Devotion of time to research by the very best authors and critics has been given that its facts may be clearly and accurately presented. It contains no statements based on rumors, no accounts taken from unauthoritative sources. The New World undoubtedly was a great determining factor in the overthrow and crushing of junkerism, and for that reason this volume should be of the greatest interest to the peoples of Canada and the United States. Over two and one half million sons of North America crossed to France. Their concentration and transportation was one of the greatest military feats in history. Canada, as a part of the British Empire, naturally became involved first. Her record of service will fill every patriot with a feeling of pride and inspiration. The active share in the war by the United States, though it covered only a little over a year and a half, is the nation's most glorious achievement. With this in mind, painstaking effort has been made to do the fullest justice to all in recounting the parts played by these nations during the months of their unselfish crusade against autocracy and militarism. Entertaining visualization of the war is best attained through photographs. Consequently this book has been profusely illustrated with hundreds of scenes officially photographed during the long period of campaigning on all the great fronts. These in themselves tell the narrative in a convincing manner. In securing these pictures, the most skilled men attached to the fighting forces were employed. Many were taken by men who risked death for a "close up." In preparing this instructive, inspiring and entertaining history, no vital episode of the war has been overlooked. The narrative is complete from the demolition of Liege to the restoration of Peace. It is hoped that it will do full justice to the sacrifice, courage, steadfastness in the face of great difficulties, of the tireless and valorous fighting men of the British Empire, France, Italy, Belgium, Serbia and the United States. Download or read book The Story of the Great War Classic Reprint written by Roland G. Usher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Great War It was tragic that the men and women who fought the war were too busy to study it. The greatest peril of the new era is that they will still be too busy with reconstruction to devote even casual attention to the great event itself, in the light of which alone can the decisions be made by which the new era is to be shaped. People are weary of working and weary of reading. Yet there was never a time when effort was more necessary nor when a little would have such significant results upon national and international events. Book A History of the Great War Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Great War Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Buchan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Great War, Vol. 1 This work in its original form appeared in twenty-four volumes between February 1915 and July mm, and was therefore written and published for the most part during the progress of the campaign. Begun as an experiment to pass the time during a period of enforced inaction, its large sales and the evidence forthcoming that it met a certain need induced me to continue it as a duty, and the bulk of it was written in the scanty leisure which I could snatch from service abroad and at home. Any narrative produced under such conditions must bristle with imperfections. It will contain many errors of fact. The writer cannot stage his drama or prepare the reader for a sudden change by a gradual revelation of its causes. His work must have something of the apparent inconsequence of real life. He records one month a sanguine mood and a hopeful forecast; three months later he will tell of depression and of expectations belied. He must set out interim judgments, and presently recant them.
