Book excerpt: Smart Inspection Systems: Techniques and Applications of Intelligent Vision will enable engineers to understand the various stages of automated visual inspection (AVI) and how artificial intelligence can be incorporated into each stage to create "smart" inspection systems. The book contains many examples that illustrate and explain the application of conventional and artificial intelligence techniques in AVI. The text covers the whole AVI process, from illumination, image enhancement, segmentation and feature extraction, through to classification, and includes case studies of implemented AVI systems as well as reviews of commercially available inspection systems. Each chapter concludes with exercises. This book will be of interest to users and developers of commercial industrial inspection systems as well as researchers in the fields of machine vision, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing engineering.

Book Automated Inspection of Airfoils Enabled by Deep Learning

Download or read book Automated Inspection of Airfoils Enabled by Deep Learning written by Christian Schirmer and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality inspection on a per-part basis is an important step of the manufacturing process of safety-critical products. While automated optical inspection (AOI) offers many advantages from process efficiency and cost to inspection accuracy, it also comes with several challenges, especially in the domain of aerospace components featuring complex geometry, semi-specular surface finishes, and irregular and small-sized defects. Using traditional methods, the complex surface finish and geometries of aircraft engine airfoils would require carefully-crafted image processing and statistical analysis algorithms for each new part variant or defect class to be considered. Although recent advancements in deep learning neural network (DNN) classifiers offer promising prospects, they generally require training with a very large amount of labeled data which may not be readily available. In this research, a new framework is developed, which consists of part-segmentation and image-preprocessing schemes, automation using collaborative robotics, and the use of transfer-learning using a pre-trained DNN for decision making. This framework can effectively address the issues in image acquisition and preprocessing to ensure the quality of data, and at the same time can take full advantage of deep learning to detect subtle defects in airfoils using only a limited set of training data. It delivers a proof-of-concept AOI system that can achieve upwards of 94% defect detection accuracy with a 1-minute cycle time, which represents a significant advancement over the existing tedious and often inconsistent manual inspection process with 70-80% accuracy and a 6-minute cycle time.

Book Quality Control in Automation

Download or read book Quality Control in Automation written by Ken. Stout and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing role of industry, the trend towards automation, the in creased cost of raw materials and labour rates all emphasize the need for improved quality of manufacture which will lead to better reliability, reduced maintenance costs and incidence of failure, as well as greater consumer confidence. Many countries, including Japan, are noted for their high quality of manufacture. This has helped them monopolize the world radio and television market and achieve great in-roads into the motor industry. If other economies are to compete effectively against such competition, then improvements in quality and performance of products are necessary. The need for control of quality embraces many fields from design, manufacture, function testing and inspection, through to an understand ing of sampling procedures and sampling theory, embracing both employee and management responsibilities to the maintenance of quality. The aim of this book is to give an understanding of industrial quality control. The techniques described have been selected so that they may be applied to industrial problems. It is hoped and expected that these methods will lead to improvements in quality and economics of manufac ture, thus leading to increased productivity and profitability. 9 1 The Need for Quality Control The major goals for quality control are manifold and include a need to determine the real functional tolerances required for engineering specifications and to provide a plan for control of the quality of the results of a process related to time. This is normally achieved by statistical or control chart methods.

Book Improving the Effectiveness and Reliability of Non Destructive Testing

Download or read book Improving the Effectiveness and Reliability of Non Destructive Testing written by W.E. Gardner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the two most important aspects of the use of non-destructive testing. Firstly, the effectiveness of procedures to detect and size the defects present irrespective of the geometry, materials involved or environment. Secondly, the reliability of instrumentation and personnel to perform the specified procedures. Validation and certification techniques required for the justification of safe operation of a plant are also discussed. Experts in industries where safety and defect detection are of paramount importance have made valuable contributions drawn from their experience to make this book essential reading for anyone responsible for safety of plant operation. Illustrated throughout, the book is also of interest to mechanical and structural engineers, researchers and inspectors as well as being a useful reference tool for graduate students.

Book Non Destructive Testing

Download or read book Non Destructive Testing written by J. M. Farley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Destructive Testing, Volume 4 contains the proceedings of the Fourth European Conference held in London on September 13-17, 1987. Contributors explore a variety of topics related to non-destructive testing (NDT), including ultrasonic techniques, ultrasonic systems, electromagnetic techniques, condition monitoring of plant and structures, and magnetic particle and penetrant techniques. This text is comprised of 98 chapters; the first of which describes an ultrasonic technique for the assessment of the fat content of live beef animals for breeding purposes. Attention then turns to measurements of the longitudinal ultrasonic wave attenuation in spheroidal graphite iron test pieces subjected to fatigue loads. The chapters that follow focus on ultrasonic imaging; dry coupling probes; an expert system for ultrasonic examination of fuel rods; engineering and medical applications of diagnostic ultrasound; and signal processing of 3D maps of eddy currents. The reader is also methodically introduced to automation of eddy current testing; the use of artificial intelligence in vibration-based health monitoring; automated inspection of magnetic particles; and the theory and practice of acoustic emission. This text concludes with a chapter that reviews the NDT research program of the National NDT Center of Harwell Laboratory in the UK. This book will be of interest to materials scientists, materials engineers, and metallurgists.
