Book excerpt: Supporting scalable and efficient routing and service provision in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) has been a big research challenge. In this dissertation, we propose a scalable and efficient geographic routing and service provision architecture for MANET. The architecture is designed to possess the features of scalability, efficiency, robustness and adaptability. Conventional topology-based schemes are normally hard to scale, instead, we make use of geographic information in the architecture to improve the performance. Due to the close relationship between routing and service provision, we integrate the application-layer service provision and the network-layer routing in one architecture. Such cross-layer design makes different layers to work more closely and efficiently. The architecture is composed of four components. First, an efficient hierarchical structure is built and maintained. The structure is adaptive and flexible. Specifically, the number of layers can be adjusted according to the service and management requirements. Second, a scalable service and membership management scheme is deployed on top of the hierarchical structure to efficiently track the resource and service states. Third, the traffic patterns in a service provision network are various, and we design unicast and multicast routing protocols to support robust service data delivery in the architecture. We develop two self-adaptive on-demand geographic unicast routing protocols for MANET. They can build efficient paths based on the need of user applications and adapt to various scenarios to provide efficient and reliable routing. The local topology is updated in a timely manner according to network dynamics and traffic demand. A route optimization scheme is adopted to adapt the routing path according to both topology change and actual data traffic requirements. Instead of pre-setting parameter values, each node can determine and adjust the protocol parameter values independently according to different network environments, data traffic conditions and node's own requirements. We use the second protocol to support the peer communications in the architecture. Its reactive and adaptive mechanism can meet different routing requirements in service provision networks. We also design two scalable geographic multicast protocols for MANET to implement scalable membership management and robust multicast packet delivery. The first protocol builds a network-range zone-based bi-directional tree for membership management and packet delivery. In the second protocol, a hierarchical structure is constructed based on an on demand zone structure, and both control messages and data packets are forwarded along efficient tree-shape paths without active tree structure built and maintained, which efficiently reduces the maintenance overhead and increases the reliability of the protocol. Both protocols combine location service for group members with membership management to further reduce overhead. We use the second protocol in the architecture to provide scalable and robust routing support for group communications. Finally, with the support of all the above components, the service provision functions are deployed in the architecture. The service delivery including long-term data transfers and short-term control message transmissions is supported by our unicast and multicast routing protocols. By following the hierarchical structure, we design an efficient and scalable service discovery scheme to quickly locate appropriate service providers. Based on the service states aggregated at different layers through the service management and with the assist of the hierarchical structure, efficient service coordination is implemented in service discovery and usage phases to coordinate multiple service providers to provide a service. Furthermore, robust service monitoring can also be applied in the architecture to monitor the resource and service states during service usage.

Book Scalable Location Management for Geographic Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many solutions have been proposed for routing in mobile ad hoc networks, only a few have considered the issue of scalability of these protocols in networks having node membership in the order of thousands spread over a large area. Geographic routing using source-destination locations has been widely suggested as a scalable alternative to conventional routing approaches in mobile ad hoc networks. However, efficient location management algorithms are required to discover a destination's location before data transfer can be attempted using geographic routing. To be deemed scalable with respect to network size, mobility and traffic, the signalling overhead due to location management must be kept low so that the performance of geographic routing is minimally affected. In this research, we introduce a novel location management protocol known as Scalable Location Management (SLALoM), which outlines a scheme for partitioning a given terrain into ordered regions for location management. Our detailed analysis shows that under random node mobility and communication requirements, SLALoM improves upon the asymptotic location management cost compared to existing location management schemes. As an optimization, we use the concept of local forwarding to introduce a scheme called Efficient Location Forwarding (ELF) that mitigates the location update cost of SLALoM. We show that, while the asymptotic overhead cost by such an improvisation matches that of SLALoM, ELF outperforms SLALoM in practice. Noting that a two-level hierarchy leads to an overall reduction in the location management cost, we investigate the use of multilevel hierarchy to further minimize the signalling cost and make efficient use of the limited bandwidth of the wireless channel. We propose a novel grid ordering scheme known as Hierarchical Grid Location Management (HGRID) that yields only a logarithmic increase in the location update cost with respect to the number of nodes in a uniformly and randomly distributed ad hoc network. We also show that, under a specific framework, all the proposed protocols are scalable with respect to mobility and network size. We carry out extensive simulations to quantitatively compare the performance of the protocols under practical considerations that could not be incorporated into the analysis, and to study how location management can affect geographic routing. Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

Many routing protocols have been proposed to accommodate the needs of communications for Mobile Adhoc Network. In this project, there is problem in delivering data packets for highly dynamic mobile ad hoc networks in a reliable and timely manner. Most existing ad hoc routing protocols are susceptible to node mobility, especially for large-scale networks. Driven by this issue, an efficient protocol was introduced. It takes advantage of the stateless property of geographic routing and the broadcast nature of wireless medium. When a data packet is sent out, some of the neighbor nodes that have overheard the transmission will serve as forwarding candidates, and take turn to forward the packet if it is not relayed by the specific best forwarder within a certain period of time.

This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wireless sensor and ad hoc network consists of a large number of low-power nodes equipped with wireless radio. The design of efficient routing protocols for dynamic network topologies is crucial for scalable sensor and ad hoc networks. Geographic routing is a recently developed technique that uses locally available position information of nodes to make packet forwarding decisions. This book develops a framework for energy efficient geographic routing. This framework includes a path pruning strategy by exploiting the channel listening capability, an anchor-based routing protocol using anchors to act as relay nodes between source and destination, a geographic multicast algorithm clustering destinations that can share the same next hop, and a lifetime-aware routing algorithm to prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor networks by considering four important factors: PRR (Packet Reception Rate), forwarding history, progress and remaining energy. This book discusses the system design, theoretic analysis, simulation and testbed implementation involved in the aforementioned framework.

Book Development of Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

This book was released on with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the focus is on the analysis and design of efficient, adaptive, and scalable routing protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. Next section presents the objective of the work performed in the context of this book. The main objective of this book is to develop routing protocols, which are appropriate for challenging environment of mobile ad-hoc networks. Given the inherent characteristics of these networks, the solutions must be adaptable to dynamic topologies, efficient with the bandwidth usage, scalable and energy efficient when various network parameters are concerned. Moreover, the focus is also on realistic approaches having relevance in real-life deployments. This means that the protocols should not be designed merely based on generic assumptions, which could lead to incorrect conclusions. Network Simulator (ns2.34) is the tools, which are used to determine that the developed algorithms are implementable in real networks. For validation in ad hoc networks, a specific scenario should also be mentioned for which the routing protocol has been designed. Meeting of these objectives includes providing the perception of the realities of ad-hoc networking. In addition, the proposed solutions should be compared against corresponding solutions found in the literature. New solutions must offer better performance with respect to others, to be able to contribute something to the research community. To summarize, the main goal of this book is to improve the knowledge in ad-hoc networking by providing solutions, which can help in developing new features for MANETs. This book will give the details of the methodology employed to achieve the goals.

Book Environment Aware Location Service for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Environment Aware Location Service for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks written by Sabbir Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a successful and efficient communication in mobile ad hoc network, routing protocols play a vital role. Among those proposed in literature, location based routing protocols show their superiority over others by exhibiting low communication overhead, higher scalability and better adaptability in scenarios where node mobility is high; especially high scalability makes them attractive for large-scale deployment of ad hoc network. As the name indicates, location based routing protocols greatly rely on the precise knowledge of the mobile devices' location, which is provided by a location service. Huge research efforts have been dedicated in developing location services where the researchers have emphasized on making the services scalable but little consideration was given on their applicability in real-world environment as most services have been designed assuming an ideal deployment environment that fails to represent the impact of the real-world on node mobility and signal propagation.A location service most suitable in a realistic environment must consider the impact of environmental contexts (obstacles, pathways, etc.), making the mobility model a vital factor through which the environmental impact is reflected in simulation. This study develops a novel mobility model which emulates realistic node mobility more accurately by considering various environmental contexts. Non-uniform node distribution caused by environmental contexts impacts the performance of the existing location services drastically. This demands a pressing need for a location service that can adopt itself while ensuring seamless service. In this study non-uniform node distribution arising from natural phenomena is considered while designing a novel location service protocol that adapts itself to the presence and nature of the environmental context. As the location service utilizes the underlying location based routing protocol for transferring service related messages, signal attenuation experienced due to environmental contexts is also taken into account in the routing protocol for finding routable paths, which in turn further enhances the performance of the proposed location service significantly. The proposed location service shows a superior ability to provide location information while maintaining scalability. A detailed mathematical model of the scalability is also presented. Exhaustive simulation has been conducted using a real-world map, which demonstrates the significant superiority of the proposed scheme over other competitive location service protocols (e.g., HLS (Hierarchical Location Service) and GLS (Grid Location Service)) for both uniformly and non-uniformly distributed nodes, and establishes its greater applicability to real-world environments.
