Book excerpt: The inspiration for the Lexicon of An Infinite Mind, a Dictionary of Words and Terms in Sri Aurobindo's “Savitri” came to me in the early 1970's during the initial stages of the construction of the Matrimandir and Matrimandir Gardens in Auroville. I was greatly encouraged by Madhav Pandit who asked me to begin the work immediately as I could be sure that Mother's force would be with me at every moment to enable me complete the Lexicon. Although preliminary study began, the intensity of the labour to begin build the Gardens of the Matrimandir, collecting, propagating and studying the adaptability and acclimatization of hundreds of the most beautiful species precluded further research at the time.Now, more than forty years have passed since the first inspiration came. The title is taken from Book Eleven, The Book of Everlasting Day, Canto One, The Eternal Day: The Soul's Choice and the Supreme Consummation,.. the first lexicon of an infinite mindTranslating the language of eternal bliss. The Lexicon languished in limbo when Mary Helen passed away in 2002 and copyright issues surfaced necessitating an exhaustive reworking. All definitions have now been taken from free dictionary sources, out of copyright dictionaries, and those offered by the authors.The first list of words and terms was compiled in 1998. In 1999 our research intensified and continued through the winter of 2001 when we had completed more than 90% of the Lexicon. In February 2002 Mary Helen, my beloved friend, companion, wife and disciple of Mother and Sri Aurobindo, passed away after a long battle with cancer. Her understanding of English grammar, punctuation, style, etc., has led to a far wider compilation than had earlier been envisioned. When a dear friend at Savitri Bhavan in Auroville, sent us a list of words for which a disciple from India needed clarification our scope was again enlarged, understanding that for many whose first language is not English there are numerous words with multiple definitions, many so profound as to be puzzling or seemingly obscure, or not readily accessible to being defined. For this reason we revisited the entire text and began to include words that may be felt by some familiar with English to be “common” yet are employed by Sri Aurobindo in unique ways in Savitri. Even then, there remain hundreds of more well known words that have been omitted so that the Lexicon might prove not too unwieldy.We are aware that much of Savitri is incomprehensible to the mind without an inner illumination or understanding from the planes above the mind, and challenges transcription in a lexicographic sense. Sri Aurobindo, has expanded the English language as no one has done since Shakespeare, coined new words, employed words in unique and far wider senses, utilized and often anglicised foreign terms and widened the language by conveying visions and experiences that are beyond words. In fact, he has written Savitri from planes far above the mind and described with a clarity and precison worlds upon worlds as no poet has done in all the poetic compositions of the ages.

This book is an aid to the deeper understanding of the many words and terms in various languages including references from the Vedas and the Upanishads. In the poem we learn of the two-in-one, the dual Avatars, Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, who have come to this world to uplift and transform mankind establishing a new transforming force on earth, the Supermind. It also opens us to the consciousness-force of the Divine, the Mother, who in the poem as Savitri, descends here to conquer death by love and establish on earth the Life Divine. If you will begin to read Savitri, aloud whenever possible, to dwell in its transcendent music and rhythms, not attempting at all to fathom its mantric lines with the limited mental consciousness, a new world will open before you and long before you have completed reading the poem your life will be changed. This I have personally experienced and the Supplement to the Lexicon of an Infinite Mind is my offering to those who aspire to grow in consciousness through a love of Savitri. In all the poetic accomplishments of man, however high, there is nothing to compare with this epic of nearly 24,000 lines. It has indeed been a labour of love and a supreme blessing to receive the replies to my many questions concerning words and terms from those who have an opening to the higher planes and have chosen Savitri as their sadhana and their path to realization and transformation.

The cardinal teaching of Gita, "Vasudeva Sarvam iti" provided for him the bedrock of his philosophy in "Savitri". The spiritual revolution he envisioned in "Savitri" is that the universe is a manifestation of consciousness occurring in an integral process. Modern quantum physics is bearing many similarities with his ideas. Thus while "Savitri" is a symbol of struggle, redemption, and the incarnation of a divine mother who restores the Golden age, the Bhagavad Gita teaches the same call to the eternal avatar in each being and to the establishment of Sat-Chit-Ananda on the terrestrial plane.

Although There Are Fundamental Differences In Terms Of The Nature Of Chitra And Savitri S Awareness, There Is No Denying The Fact That These Legends From The Mahabharata Are Exquisite Examples Of The Female Aspect Of The Indian Women.

Like most Hindu spiritual aspirants of his time GD had turned to Sri Aurobindo through Essays on the Gita, & diligently practiced this ideal offered by Sri Aurobindo in his Uttarpāra Speech: "...not only to understand intellectually but to realise what... He demands of those who aspire to do His work, to be free from repulsion & desire, to do work for Him without demand for fruit, to renounce self-will & become a passive & faithful instrument in His hands, to have an equal heart for high & low, friend & opponent, success & failure, yet not to do His work negligently." Prior to settling in the Ashram GD had been a conscientious principled teacher in Govt. institutions, habituated to obey their principles & policies. Jayantilal Parekh appointed him stock-keeper of the reams of paper purchased for printing the 30-volume SABCL, & keeping a register of customers who had paid in advance & sending them volumes ready for dispatch. Then the research & publication (R&P) wing of JP's Archives charged him with compiling a glossary-cum-index of proper names in SABCL & in its own Archives & Research Journal (A&R). When GD's backbreaking fifteen years of labour was crowned by R&P's refusal to publish it, it was Harikant Patel, the Managing Trustee of the Ashram, who saw to it that a decent number of GD's 368-page Glossary & Index (G&I) ended up on SABDA's lap. Then GD, conscientious soul that he was, without care for his ailing 76-years old body, went on to add half-a-dozen more draining years of & produced a 30-page Corrigenda-cum-Addenda, as Supplement to the Glossary, which Harikant got published in 1996 - just two years before GD's body gave up. Prior to which he had instructed me on what he would like a revised edition to be. Providentially a professor of SAICE, keen to preserve GD's work, got it scanned & granted me a digital copy.My purpose in this 'brief compendium' is to place the proper names I have selected from GD's 'vast' G&I in what I believe to be their right context in the lives of Sri Aurobindo & the Mother, using my innate modus operandi defined by my classmate Rājendra Bālgé in 1964-65 as simplification by complification. I have omitted those entries on which ample material is easily available, those not used by Sri Aurobindo, & those about which GD repeats what was in SABCL & A&R as Sri Aurobindo's. I have added what I could obtain of the historical, political, & biographical background of those proper names directly connected with Sri Aurobindo, often with relevant quotations from him & Mother; as a result there are many half-to-four-five-page fusions of history & biography inspired by two scholarly works built on such fusions aimed at promoting European Enlightenment (q.v.) - note that like them, I too, am rather lax in giving my sources: (1) ex-ICS, C.I.E. (Companion of Indian Empire), C.E. Buckland's Dictionary of Indian Biography, London, 1905, reprinted by Indological Book House, Varanasi & Delhi, 1971. Its preface declares: "This Dictionary purports to be a handy Work of Reference, giving the main facts ['notices' he calls them, i.e. Imperial Edicts] of the lives of about 2,600 persons - English, Indian, Foreign, men & women, living or dead - who have contributed to the welfare, service, & advancement of India...or have gained some special notoriety [as enemies of Pax Britannica]. It has been thought desirable to commence the present volume from about 1750 AD...when the British power in India was being established." (2) Prof Sachchidananda Bhattacharya's Dictionary of Indian History, Univ. of Calcutta, 2nd Ed., 1972, devotedly dedicated: "To All Orientalists, Eastern & Western, who by their Learned Labour have contributed to the Advancement of our Knowledge of the History of this Ancient Land of Ours." Bushnell argues that Western music’s conventions for performance, composition, and listening, established during the colonial period, persist in postcolonial thought and practice. Music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods (Bach through Brahms) coincides with the rise of colonialism, and Western music contains imperial attitudes and values embedded within its conventions, standards, and rules. The book focuses on the culture of classical music as reflected in the worlds of characters and texts and contends that its effects outlast the historical significance of the real composers, pieces, styles, and forms. Through examples by authors such as McEwan, Vikram Seth, Bernard MacLaverty, Chang-rae Lee, and J.M. Coetzee, the book demonstrates how Western music enters narrative as both acts of history and as structures of analogy that suggest subject positions, human relations, and political activity that, in turn, describes a postcolonial condition. The uses to which Western music is put in each literary text reveals how European art music of the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries is read and misread by postcolonial generations, exposing mostly hidden cultural structures that influence our contemporary understandings of social relations and hierarchies, norms for resolution and for assigning significance, and standards of propriety. The book presents strategies for thinking anew about the persistence of cultural imperialism, reading Western music simultaneously as representative of imperial, cultural dominance and as suggestive of resistant structures, forms, and practices that challenge the imperial hegemony.
