Assembled by a mysterious superspy and operating without the political or bureaucratic oversight that can hamstring even the bravest fighting forces, the Superhawks are America’s ruthless answer to 9/11. An ultra-elite force operating on the edges, they are the world’s best sharpshooters, spies, demolition men, pilots, brawlers, and soldiers—and they all have a personal motive for revenge. In Strike Force Alpha, the Superhawks’ mission is to kill Osama bin Laden. Hidden aboard the Ocean Voyager, this elite unit of assault troops carries out brazen, daring raids all over the Persian Gulf as it seeks its number one target: al-Qaeda’s master mission planner. Strike Force Bravo begins with the Superhawks taking on a terrorist cell that’s captured Singapore’s Tonka Tower Hotel. But al-Qaeda is hatching a new plot involving Stinger missiles. Can the Superhawks stop it in time? Or will the American military bureaucracy trip itself up before they even have a chance? In Strike Force Charlie, dozens of al-Qaeda terrorists preparing to unleash attacks from the heart of America sneak into the United States under paper-thin disguises. The Superhawks team up with a group of civilians to protect the country, save thousands of lives, and purge the government of high-level traitors.. And in Strike Force Delta, a supersquad from America’s premier special ops unit, Delta Force, comes under attack in West Africa. Though they take out over fifty terrorists, the secret Delta Thunder team is captured. It’s up to the Superhawks to invade the radicals’ fortress, save the unit’s men, and flatline the “crown prince” of terrorism before he can execute the hostages on live TV.

Book Jacksons Monk Rowe and the Brodsky Quartet the formative years

Download or read book Jacksons Monk Rowe and the Brodsky Quartet the formative years written by Jacqueline Thomas and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many ten-year-olds form a string quartet which goes on to world renown and lasts for half a century (and counting)? In the industrial heartland of the North East, Middlesbrough is frequently dubbed the arsehole of England, the least-desirable place to live. Yet there, in the seventies, was a thriving classical music scene out of which emerged the world-famous Brodsky Quartet who, now approaching their 50th anniversary, have built a starlit reputation for their live performances and over 70 acclaimed recordings. Jacqueline Thomas is the little girl who began this quartet and she remains its cellist to this day. Her memoir tells the story of the first ten formative years, with insight into the passion and fervour surrounding music-making on all levels, many amusing and sometimes hilarious extracts from her teen diaries, the single-minded obsession with their Art and the ambition to make it a success. With a distinct flavour of the 1970s, her teen-self also grapples with the gender inequalities endemic in the music world back then. The quirky title, from the author’s childhood nickname, is finally explained - a bonus for fans of The Juliet Letters, the album they co-wrote with Elvis Costello.

Book The String Quartet 1750 1797

Download or read book The String Quartet 1750 1797 written by Mara Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the eighteenth century witnessed a flourishing of the string quartet, often represented as a smooth and logical progression from first violin-dominated homophony to a more equal conversation between the four voices. Yet this progression was neither as smooth nor as linear as previously thought, as Mara Parker illustrates in her examination of the string quartet during this period. Looking at a wide variety of string quartets by composers such as Pleyel, Distler and Filtz, in addition to Haydn and Mozart, the book proposes a new way of describing the relationships between the four instruments in different works. Broadly speaking, these relationships follow one of four patterns: the 'lecture', the 'polite conversation', the 'debate', and the 'conversation'. In focusing on these musical discourses, it becomes apparent that each work is the product of its composer's stylistic choices, location, intended performers and intended audience. Instead of evolving in a strict and universal sequence, the string quartet in the latter half of the eighteenth century was a complex genre with composers mixing and matching musical discourses as circumstances and their own creative impulses required.

Book The Lasalle Quartet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Spruytenburg
  • Publisher : Boydell & Brewer Ltd
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 1843838354
  • Pages : 422 pages

Download or read book The Lasalle Quartet written by Robert Spruytenburg and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive study of the LaSalle Quartet, for forty years the premier exponent of 'the new music' for string quartet. The LaSalle Quartet (1946-1987) was the premier exponent of 'the new music' for string quartet. Founded in 1946 at the Julliard School in New York, it became famous for its performances of works by the Second Viennese School and its commissioning of many new pieces by contemporary post-war composers. As a result, the quartets by Lutoslawski, Ligeti and Nono have since entered the standard repertory, sitting comfortably next to those by Schoenberg, Berg andWebern. The LaSalle Quartet's brilliant advocacy of the quartets by Alexander Zemlinsky resulted in best-selling recordings for Deutsche Grammophon. In an informative and critical dialogue between new and old, the LaSalleQuartet was also an incisive interpreter of the classical quartet repertory; many of its recordings are still in print. Its record as a teaching quartet is equally impressive, numbering among its students at the University of Cincinnati the Alban Berg, Brahms, Prazak, Artis, Buchberger, Ponche and Vogler Quartets. The LaSalle Quartet's founder and first violinist, Walter Levin, is himself a highly influential teacher whose students have included the conductor James Levine and the violinist Christian Tetzlaff, as well as many third-generation string quartets. This book, based on extensive interviews with Walter Levin conducted by Robert Spruytenburg over five years, is in equal measure autobiography, history of the Quartet, reminiscences of the contemporary composers who figured so prominently in its career, and penetrating commentary on the LaSalle Quartet's wide-ranging repertory. All these aspectsare artfully woven into a uniquely valuable, informative and entertaining document of musical life in the twentieth century. ROBERT SPRUYTENBURG lives in Basel. He was introduced to Walter Levin in 1988 and took part inhis chamber music courses. Since 2003, Spruytenburg has been working on the LaSalle Quartet's archives located at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel. He is a frequent contributor to classical music programmes for Swiss radio.

Book The String Quartets of Joseph Haydn

Download or read book The String Quartets of Joseph Haydn written by Floyd Grave and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned music historians Floyd and Margaret Grave present a fresh perspective on a comprehensive survey of the works. This thorough and unique analysis offers new insights into the creation of the quartets, the wealth of musical customs and conventions on which they draw, the scope of their innovations, and their significance as reflections of Haydn's artistic personality. Each set of quartets is characterized in terms of its particular mix of structural conventions and novelties, stylistic allusions, and its special points of connection with other opus groups in the series. Throughout the book, the authors draw attention to the boundless supply of compositional strategies by which Haydn appears to be continually rethinking, reevaluating, and refining the quartet's potentials. They also lucidly describe Haydn's famous penchant for wit, humor, and compositional artifice, illuminating the unexpected connections he draws between seemingly unrelated ideas, his irony, and his lightning bolts of surprise and thwarted expectation. Approaching the quartets from a variety of vantage points, the authors correct many prevailing assumptions about convention, innovation, and developing compositional technique in the music of Haydn and his contemporaries.
