Book excerpt: A gripping new thriller that unpacks the horrors of exploitation in the garment industry, blending the nailbiting courtroom drama of John Grisham with the emotional heart of Khaled Hosseini. 'Poignant and engrossing ... Corban Addison will hold you spellbound with his elegant prose from his first word to his last' Wilbur Smith In Dhaka, Bangladesh, a garment factory burns to the ground, claiming the lives of hundreds of workers, mostly young women. Amid the rubble, a bystander captures a heart-stopping image-a teenage girl lying in the dirt, her body broken by a multi-storey fall, and over her mouth a mask of fabric bearing the label of one of America's largest retailers, Presto Omnishops Corporation. When the photo goes viral, it fans the flames of a decades old controversy about sweatshops, labour rights, and the ethics of globalization. A year later, in Washington, D.C., Joshua Griswold, a disgraced former journalist for the Washington Post, receives an anonymous summons from a corporate whistleblower promising information about Presto. He offers Griswold confidential information about Presto's apparel supply chain. For Griswold, the challenge of exposing Presto's wilful negligence is irresistible, as is the chance, however slight, at redemption. Deploying his old journalistic skills, he builds a historic case against Presto, setting the stage for a war in the courtroom and in the media that Griswold is determined to win - both to salvage his reputation and to provoke a revolution of conscience in Presto's boardroom that could change the course of the fashion industry across the globe.

Book excerpt: A fascinating collaboration between a medieval historian and a professor of psychiatry, this enthralling book applies modern biological and psychological research findings to the lives of medieval mystics and ascetics. Drawing upon a database of over 1,400 medieval holy persons and in-depth studies of individual saints, this illuminating study examines the relationship between medieval mystical experiences, the religious practices of mortification; laceration of the flesh, sleep deprivation and extreme starvation, and how these actions produced altered states of consciousness and brain function in the heroic ascetics. Examining and disputing much contemporary writing about the political and gender motivations in the medieval quest for a closeness with God, this is essential reading for anyone with an interest in medieval religion or the effects of self-injurious behaviour on the mind.

Download or read book Pins Needles and Thorns written by D. Ed. Wolf and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PINS, TICKLES AND THORNS is a real story written by a troubled man in great mental pain. The mental pain becomes physical pain when he tries to put on paper what that pain is...what caused that pain and, most of all, why. The book reveals stories about cheating wives and stupid husbands and what they have to do with the writer's pain. The locations are worldwide showing that these problems are not assigned to any one location but are universal. The writing style changes, sometimes abrubtly, depending on the mental anguish of the writer at the time. Telling a nice love story of his first real love is written tenderly and softly. As he begins to recognize possible causes of this pain the writing may be bitter, angry, sad and sometimes apologetic. This book was not intended to be a "book", it was intended to solve the writer's problem. Make that, "problems". How many affairs does it take to turn a seemingly sexually satisfied man into a "porcupine turned inside out"? Occasionally some comments are in italics. The writer recognizes that some of his comments are not going to be believed by some readers, especially older women. The comments in italics are an attempt to let readers know that his comments are not intended to make the reader think what he does and says is "normal", they were normal for this writer. The writer's pain is revealed in the changes in writing style. A lot of dots, double spacing on some pages, and abrupt endings of some chapters are only expressions of his pain, his words show him trying to find the answers to his painful questions. Of course all names and places have been changed to protect the guilty.
