Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judas Iscariot. The ultimate traitor. It was his kiss of greeting that signaled the temple officials to arrest Jesus of Nazareth and send him to his death. We all know the story: in exchange for a paltry sum of money—thirty pieces of silver—Judas agreed to hand over his rabbi to the religious authorities in Jerusalem, who put Jesus on trial and ultimately ensured that he would be crucified. When Judas saw what was about to happen to Jesus, he was seized with remorse, gave back the money, and went out and hanged himself. That’s the story as we have it in the New Testament Gospels. But what if, before he hanged himself, Judas took the time to write a suicide note? What would he have had to say? That question lies at the center of this novel. A Rope for Judas is Judas Iscariot’s suicide note, and it delves into the complicated inner life of this most despised of disciples in an effort to find out what motivated him to do what he did.

Book Our Father Who Aren t in Heaven

Download or read book Our Father Who Aren t in Heaven written by Robert S. Turner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord's Prayer holds an honored place in the worship and devotional practices of countless Christians around the world. People of every ethnic background, denominational affiliation, and theological leaning pray to "Our Father who art in heaven." But what if there's more to it than we think? Our Father Who Aren't in Heaven takes a decidedly this-worldly approach to the prayer, and seeks to understand what Jesus meant to teach his original disciples--and us--through this radical manifesto of the kingdom of God. In these pages, Robert S. Turner presents a political reading of the prayer and explores how we can encounter through it a God who has left the divine hammock empty and cast God's lot with humanity and the rest of creation. A renewed understanding of the prayer may have the capacity to transform the world. These subversive reflections on the Lord's Prayer may have the capacity to transform the reader as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Cecil B. DeMille's production of King of Kings in 1927, to Mel Gibson's recent The Passion of the Christ, films that discuss the meaning of Jesus have provoked interest, discussion, and reevaluation on a large scale. Hollywood films that deal with this subject have consistently managed to augment their inherent power by commenting simultaneously on political and cultural matters, and drawing from alternative cultural and mythological sources. The Greatest Story Ever Told, for instance, uses a landscape similar to that of the American West, while The Last Temptation of Christ deals with themes related to modern American notions of sexuality and sin. This timely examination considers the life of Jesus as it has been portrayed in such films as King of Kings, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Jesus of Nazareth, The Last Temptation of Christ, and The Passion of the Christ, as well as the more allusive and implicit use of Christ-related themes in Spartacus, Shane, and The Matrix. It looks at the diverse content and often-surprising impact of these and other films, and reveals how these depictions have helped determine, and been determined by, particularly American notions of who Jesus was, how he lived and died, and what he means for both our religious and secular cultures. Through an objective consideration of these movies, the emergent religious culture of mainstream American film becomes apparent as a central element in Hollywood movies—and in American popular culture at large.

Book Farewell to the World

  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2015-10-02

Download or read book Farewell to the World written by Marzio Barbagli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What drives a person to take his or her own life? Why would an individual be willing to strap a bomb to himself and walk into a crowded marketplace, blowing himself up at the same time as he kills and maims the people around him? Does suicide or ‘voluntary death’ have the same meaning today as it had in earlier centuries, and does it have the same significance in China, India and the Middle East as it has in the West? How should we understand this distressing, often puzzling phenomenon and how can we explain its patterns and variations over time? In this wide-ranging comparative study, Barbagli examines suicide as a socio-cultural, religious and political phenomenon, exploring the reasons that underlie it and the meanings it has acquired in different cultures throughout the world. Drawing on a vast body of research carried out by historians, anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists and psychologists, Barbagli shows that a satisfactory theory of suicide cannot limit itself to considering the two causes that were highlighted by the great French sociologist Émile Durkheim – namely, social integration and regulation. Barbagli proposes a new account of suicide that links the motives for and significance attributed to individual actions with the people for whom and against whom individuals take their lives. This new study of suicide sheds fresh light on the cultural differences between East and West and greatly increases our understanding of an often-misunderstood act. It will be the definitive history of suicide for many years to come.

Book The Saint James Conspiracy

Download or read book The Saint James Conspiracy written by Jessica Murphy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mackellan Kirby, professor of Ancient Religious Studies, with some ongoing connection to the British SAS, is enjoying retirement in Ireland, when he discovers an anomaly in the Dead Sea Scroll he has been entrusted with translating. Always ready to solve any mystery, he enlists the aid of his American niece and nephew. Their search takes them to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in northern Spain, the goal of thousands of pilgrims every year. But their holiday jaunt immediately turns deadly when other factions become interested in their search. The artifact they recover, in the cellars of the cathedral, brings together writings from the first century A.D. about a charismatic leader who escaped from Judaea with his wife Mary; the story of the eleventh century bishop entrusted with the construction of the cathedral; and the truth of the Conspiracy of St. James--a cover-up of a secret so significant that its exposure could rock the modern Christian church to its knees. If only Kirby and his young relatives live long enough.

Book A Good Man Who Came Out of Nazareth

Download or read book A Good Man Who Came Out of Nazareth written by Ellis A. Hudgins and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 15 years as a sixth-grade Sunday school director, Ellis Hudgins searched bookstores and libraries for an engaging, age-appropriate book to help teach his students about the life of Jesus. He never found one, and this book is his contribution to fill that void. A Good Man Who Came out of Nazareth is based on a one-year adult study Hudgins developed and taught at his church. Several of his sixth-grade students provided valuable criticisms of the draft that are reflected in the final text. Hudgins has worked with junior high through college-age students for more than 40 years as both a Sunday school teacher and director, creating lesson programs and support materials for the teachers in his departments. His first book translates the Bible truths he assembled for adult study in language that a junior high student can read and readily understand. Hudgins taught American history for 14 years at Texas A&M and at the University of Houston, primarily in evening classes. Throughout his career he worked in various design positions in construction technology for the petrochemical industry. After leaving the teacher's desk for four years he was invited back to the University of Houston to teach engineering graphics for an additional six years. Now retired, Hudgins continues to teach Sunday school in the College and Career class of his church in Bellville, Texas. A native of Houston, Ellis is married to Betty, whom he met one summer when he formed a youth choir at his home church. They have four adult sons and six grandchildren. Hudgins earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and religion and a Master of Arts in history from Baylor University. He completed his Bachelor of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Seminary and remained there for an additional year of post-graduate study

  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book Maccabee written by David C. Carson and published by David C. Carson. This book was released on 2007 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 167 BCE. The bloodthirsty Syrian king Antiochus IV has reneged on the promise of religious freedom made to the Jews by his forebear Alexander the Great. Antiochus sets out to abolish every semblance of Jewish religion and culture, replacing it with the revered ways of the Greeks. Hundreds are slaughtered in the courts of the temple as they resist the king s desecration of their altar. Antiochus changes the face of Jerusalem, erecting a gymnasium where the men follow the common Greek practice of exercising nude. Many of the young Jewish men betray their heritage by having their circumcisions surgically reversed to hide their distinction as Jews. One elderly priest determines it would be better to die than see their nation thus corrupted. With his five sons, Mattathias ben Hasmoneus launches a guerilla war against the hated Syrians. Judas, his middle son, proves to be the genius in battle and becomes known throughout Judea as the Maccabee, the hammer. As Judas leads the nation in the struggle for freedom, one of his continuing motivations is love for the woman promised him since childhood but who has been caught in the midst of the conflict. Only when Jerusalem is delivered from the Syrians can she become his. Maccabee draws extensively on the ancient writings of Josephus and the apocryphal works 1 and 2 Maccabees. An additional chapter has been placed at the end of Maccabee,Author s Historical Notes, for those interested in separating the fiction from the actual events.
