Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reactions are swift in the small and decidedly rural town of Sulphur Springs, Tennessee, when the unmarried high school art teacher announces that she plans to enter a painting in the town's annual Spring Fling Art Show. The title of her painting: A Room Full of Naked Men. It is not the content of the painting that matters as much as what people think the content will be. Family, coworkers, the girls down at the beauty shop, the over amorous editor of the local paper, the school board, and the Baptist preacher are just a few of the people we meet in this witty satire of small-town life. When our heroine, Sara Louise Upshaw, gets embroiled in the controversy surrounding her painting, she also manages to get acquainted with the handsome owner of the only place in town that sells "flesh" colored paint as love catches her off guard! A senile matron, five naked men running around town, a high society party that ends in a fistfight, a truckload of chickens, and the local doughnut shop are all elements in a story that shows that gossips and busybodies still hold sway in America today!

Book excerpt: The Planeta Prize–winning novel from the author of the Petra Delicado series: “A highly literate noir, a powerful tale of lives spiraling out of control” (NB magazine). Irene’s husband has left her for a younger woman and her family business is on the verge of collapse, but the last thing she wants is to be the subject of gossip or pity. So she starts spending time with a divorcée who, in liberating herself from the bonds of marriage, has also freed herself from the clutches of the old crowd of “couple friends.” Javier is a literature teacher who suddenly loses his job at a Catholic school. He’s not ambitious—the months go by and no work materializes. Then, almost by accident, he gets back in contact with a cocky friend from his youth who introduces him to the world of stripping and male prostitution. Circumstance brings Irene and Javier together: he gets some extra cash and mental stimulation out of their relationship, and she finds an outlet for her frustrations. However, Irene doesn’t want to have sex with him—she just wants to see him naked, humiliated, dominated. Their relationship takes a troubling turn, but things may be even more complicated than they seem. Alicia Giménez-Bartlett weaves a tale of economic and personal devastation, portraying the ways that life’s disappointments can bring people to do things they never would have imagined. “Incendiary . . . This provocative dive into gender, power, and class uses diverse viewpoints to craft a powerful story and an unpredictable, memorable ending.” —Publishers Weekly “A stark realist portrait of characters who are searching for their place in a world without redemption.” —Culturamas

Book Lady Astronauts Lady Engineers and Naked Ladies

Download or read book Lady Astronauts Lady Engineers and Naked Ladies written by Karin Hilck and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Lady Astronauts, Lady Engineers, and Naked Ladies is a gender history of the American space community and by extension a social history of American society in the twentieth century during the Cold War. In order to expand and differentiate the prevalent postwar narrative about gender relations and cultural structures in the United States, the book analyzes several different groups of women interacting in different social spaces within the space community. It therewith grants insight into the several layers of female participation and agency in the community and the gender and race based obstacles and hurdles the female (prospective) astronauts, scientists, engineers, artists, administrators, writers, hostesses, secretaries, and wives were faced with at NASA and in the space industry. In each chapter a different social space within the space community is analyzed. The spaces where the women lived and worked are researched from a media, individual, and institutional angle, ultimately revealing the differing gender philosophies communicated in the public sphere and the space community workplaces by government and space community officials. While women were publicly encouraged to participate in the American space effort to beat the Soviet Union in the race to the moon, women had to deal with gender based barriers which were integral to the structures of the space community; just as they were an intrinsic component of all societal structures in the United States in the 1960s. The female space workers, who were often perceived as disrupters of the prevalent social order in the space community and discriminated by some of their male colleagues and bosses on a personal basis, still managed to assert themselves. They molded pockets of agency in the space community workspaces without the facilitation of regulations on the part of NASA that might have provided them with easier access or more agency. Thus, the space community, a place of technological innovation, was not necessarily also a place of social innovation, but a community with a government agency at its center that mainly mirrored the current (changing) social order, conventions, and policies in the 1960s as well as in the 1970s and 1980s. Nevertheless, the women presented in this book were instrumental in advancing and consolidating the social transformation that happened within the space community and the United States and therefore make intriguing subjects of research. Thus, this systematic analysis of the connection between gender, space, and the Cold War adds a new dimension to space history as well as expands the discourse in American history about gender relations and the opportunities of women in the twentieth century.

Well, originally it was Jaffas and soft drink. Debbie grew up in a family where sport was king: from babyhood Debbie accompanied her father to their weekly religious attendance of the rugby league match of the day at the Sydney Cricket Ground; by primary school she was gleefully sharing her grandfather's obsession with horseracing; and in high school she became a qualified cricket umpire and acquired a rugby league coaching certificate. Did someone mention sports mad? The 2GB Sports Talent Search kick-started her career as a sports journalist and just four months after this, she was on her way to the Los Angeles Olympics as a commentator for ABC radio. With funny and fascinating tales of sports media, athletes and officials, Debbie takes us behind the scenes at Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and into individual sports - athletics, basketball, cricket and rugby league. Best known both as sideline reporter on ABC-TV's rugby league and for her role as Sportsbitch in the iconic 'Live and Sweaty' where sports met comedy, here is a woman who knows her sport. In this entertaining slice of life, irresistible to all sports-mad readers, Debbie shares an extraordinary range of incredible sporting moments. Book Thai Girl Naked

Download or read book Thai Girl Naked written by Noi Thawattana and published by Noi Thawattana. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real truth about Thai women A Thai woman is more than a sex machine, a money extractor, or a ruthless scammer. Noi Thawattana was a Bangkok prostitute, working in hostess lounges, massage parlors, and go-go bars. After marrying an American man and moving to the United States, she wrote Thai Girl Naked to expose the life of a Thai bargirl through her own voice and from her own eyes. Thai Girl Naked is a rare look at the reality of Thai prostitution, and more generally at women in Thailand, without the beer goggles, cultural ignorance, and male bravado of tourists' memoirs. Noi Thawattana knows the business and "the life," and also knows foreigners' misconceptions. As a former bargirl now studying journalism, Noi is uniquely qualified to tell a Thai woman's story, in a readable and entertaining form.
