Download or read book East and West written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2004-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In East and West Guénon diagnoses the fundamental 'abnormality' of Western civilization vis-à-vis the traditional civilizations of the East, suggests avenues by which the West might be 're-oriented' toward the fundamental metaphysical principles it has largely abandoned, and outlines the possible role of a restoration of true intellectuality in this task. Of course, East and West are no longer what they were in Guenon's time. The aggressive rationalism and materialism of post-Christian Western culture has become a worldwide phenomenon, and no longer corrodes the philosophical and cultural underpinnings of the West only: it has infiltrated distorted forms of Eastern spirituality and metaphysics, incited fundamentalist reactions the world over, and, thanks to the pervasive internet, wields previously unheard of influence. And so today we have an East largely inflamed with a desire to surpass the West in materialism, and a West sodden with moral and spiritual degeneracy. Nonetheless, fruitful exchanges between traditional Christianity and Eastern religions have also taken place on an unprecedented scale, though marred by an ongoing temptation to ill-informed syncretism. In such a milieu, Guénon's East and West, read with an eye to events of recent decades, delivers a stunning intellectual punch. But the East is always the East: the place where the sun rises, the point of recollection and return to the Source. And the West is always the West: the place of the full manifestation of possibilities (including the most degenerate), of the tendency to dissipation and dissolution; the point where the sun sets. In postmodern, global culture, we are all more or less forced to be 'Westerners' outwardly; our only recourse under these circumstances may be to become 'Easterners' within.

Download or read book Interior Visions written by Mona Hajj and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mona Hajj is a master of interior design. Her choices of colors, fabrics, and furnishings and her marvelous sense of scale transform even the most mundane of rooms into a magical kingdom. —Allan Greenberg For the last two decades, Mona Hajj has been crafting interiors that combine a global vision with an American emphasis on elegance, comfort, and simplicity. Hajj’s body of work is grounded in classicism yet influenced by the contemporary; her international upbringing—she was born in Africa and educated in Europe, Lebanon, and the United States—is evidenced in exceptional rugs, antiques, and fixtures. Interior Visions showcases Hajj’s distinct and distinctly original aesthetic voice. Beautifully photographed projects—from a beach house in Delaware to a John Russell Pope–designed house in Baltimore, from an apartment in New York City to the Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington, D.C.—display a thoughtful treatment of architecture, color, and lighting, as well as an eye for the defining detail. Among the myriad culturally and historically diverse adornments are Persian rugs, Flemish tapestries, Japanese screens, Italian chandeliers, and Chinese chargers. Finally, two residences presented in great detail—the author’s own apartment in a historic Baltimore building and an expansive horse farm in Kentucky—demonstrate a vision that is at once specific and inclusive, personal and grand, intimate and sumptuous. Interior design is all about how things feel instinctively, the special magic that flourishes when different elements are joined together. —Mona Hajj

Download or read book East of the West written by Miroslav Penkov and published by Bond Street Books. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant debut from a rising talent praised by Salman Rushdie, among others. A grandson tries to buy the corpse of Lenin on eBay for his Communist grandfather. A failed wunderkind steals a golden cross from an orthodox church. A boy meets his cousin (the love of his life) once every five years in the waters of the river that divides their village into East and West. These are some of the strange, unexpectedly moving events in talented newcomer Miroslav Penkov's vision of his home country, Bulgaria, and they are the stories that make up his extraordinary debut collection. In East of the West Penkov writes with great empathy about 800 years of tumult in troubled Eastern Europe; his characters mourn the way things were and long for things that will never be. But even as the characters wrestle with the weight of history, the debt to family, and the pangs of exile, the stories themselves are light and deft, animated by Penkov's unmatched eye for the absurd. In 2008, Salman Rushdie chose Penkov's story "Buying Lenin" (which appears in this collection) for that year's Best American Short Stories, citing its heart and humour. East of the West reveals the full realization of the brilliant potential that Rushdie recognized.

  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book East West Street written by Philippe Sands and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A profound, important book, a moving personal detective story and an uncovering of secret pasts, set in Europe’s center, the city of bright colors—Lviv, Ukraine, dividing east from west, north from south, in what had been the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A book that explores the development of the world-changing legal concepts of “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” that came about as a result of the unprecedented atrocities of Hitler’s Third Reich. It is also a spellbinding family memoir, as the author traces the mysterious story of his grandfather as he maneuvered through Europe in the face of Nazi atrocities. This is “a monumental achievement ... told with love, anger and precision” (John le Carré, acclaimed internationally bestselling author). East West Street looks at the personal and intellectual evolution of the two men who simultaneously originated the ideas of “genocide” and “crimes against humanity,” both of whom, not knowing the other, studied at the same university with the same professors, in “the Paris of Ukraine,” a major cultural center of Europe, a city variously called Lemberg, Lwów, Lvov, or Lviv. Phillipe Sands changes the way we look at the world, at our understanding of history and how civilization has tried to cope with mass murder

Book Salman Rushdie s Cities

Download or read book Salman Rushdie s Cities written by Vassilena Parashkevova and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing Salman Rushdie as a guide to a historicized contemporary, this study offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the plurality of cities along his transnational trajectory. It engages with the geographically identifiable Bombay, Karachi, Islamabad, London or New York; the phantasmal, politically coded, Jahilia or Mildendo, the inspirational yet flawed urban precedents of Fatehpur Sikri or Renaissance Florence and the ways these cities generate, interact with and transform each other. The book situates Rushdie's cities in relation to developments in Bombay, Karachi, Islamabad and London writing and focuses on novels which shuttle between cities. Parashkevova attends to cities' cultural and historical contexts, to many of Rushdie's numerous literary, cinematic and artistic influences and to diverse events, processes and paradigms - earthquakes, translations, seductions - that politically re-position cities and citizens on the contemporary urban map.
