Download or read book A Role and Reference Grammar Description of the Finnish Partitive written by Koen van Hooste and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This paper attempts to capture the argument-level occurrences of the partitive case in Finnish within the Role and Reference Grammar framework (henceforth: RRG). Partitive case in Finnish and Estonian has been studied quite extensively in the literature (Kiparsky 1998, de Hoop 1992, Nielsen 2007, Miljan & Cann 2013 etc.) and is treated as an instance of differential case marking (DCM). I will primarily draw from Kiparsky's 1998 analysis and Nielsen's 2007 paper and from the RRG-approach to DCM. This paper is conceived of as an exploratory study with a small dataset, not as an exhaustive answer to the complete complexity of the partitive. In summary, I will present an RRG-based formalization as a method for analyzing DCM, specifically the partitive

Book The Finnish Case System

Download or read book The Finnish Case System written by Minna Jaakola and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an up-to-date cognitive-linguistic account of the Finnish cases that would serve the interests of an international audience. As the Finnish linguistic tradition has always considered grammatical cases to be meaningful elements, this volume also addresses the extensive work by earlier scholars from different theoretical backgrounds. The volume consists of an introduction and eleven articles. The introduction presents the system of Finnish cases and provides a brief overview of the main tenets of cognitive linguistics, offering guidance for those readers who are not familiar with cognitive linguistics. Some articles focus on one case and present a unified account of its functions, others analyse a larger group of cases that form a system (the local cases), whereas yet others address the use of cases in certain constructions (such as expressions of change). This collection of articles also discusses more general topics, such as the notion of case, questions of polysemy, the traditional division of cases into grammatical and semantic, the relationship between inflection and derivation, and the role of inflection in the categories of adpositions and adverbs.

Book excerpt: This is an extensive manual of the Finnish language. It is an ideal source of information when you wish to learn about some specific features of Finnish, such as pronunciation, word formation, notational conventions, or verb forms, even with minimal or no previous understanding of the language. It is intended primarily for people who study, learn, or use Finnish as a foreign language. It is particularly useful to advanced language learners, translators, and linguists. The book covers · all the major features of Finnish grammar, including both standard written language, common spoken language, and features of major dialects · treatises of key specialties of Finnish such as idiomatic uses of locational case forms · in-depth look at some topics largely ignored in Finnish grammars, such as compositive forms of words and “passive” forms of verbs · punctuation rules and rules for writing numbers and special notations · issues in writing and processing Finnish-language texts in the modern world, with computers The book is also useful to people with Finnish as their native or second language, because it gives them a different look at the language. The approach in the book partly deviates from the tradition of Finnish grammars, Finnish style guides, and teaching of Finnish at schools. It treats Finnish as a world to be explored, rather than something we know all too well, and it treats it like any other language, using international concepts and terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Role and Reference Grammar (RRG) is a theory of language in which linguistic structures are accounted for in terms of the interplay of discourse, semantics and syntax. With contributions from a team of leading scholars, this Handbook provides a field-defining overview of RRG. Assuming no prior knowledge, it introduces the framework step-by-step, and includes a pedagogical guide for instructors. It features in-depth discussions of syntax, morphology, and lexical semantics, including treatments of lexical and grammatical categories, the syntax of simple clauses and complex sentences, and how the linking of syntax with semantics and discourse works in each of these domains. It illustrates RRG's contribution to the study of language acquisition, language change and processing, computational linguistics, and neurolinguistics, and also contains five grammatical sketches which show how RRG analyses work in practice. Comprehensive yet accessible, it is essential reading for anyone who is interested in how grammar interfaces with meaning.

Book excerpt: Argument-marking, morphological partitives have been the topic of language specific studies, while no cross-linguistic or typological analyses have been conducted. Since individual partitives of different languages have been studied, there exists a basis for a more cross-linguistic approach. The purpose of this book is to fill the gap and to bring together research on partitives in different languages.

Book Grammatical Case Assignment in Finnish

Download or read book Grammatical Case Assignment in Finnish written by Diane C. Nelson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1998. This book is a revision of the author’s 1995 University of Edinburgh dissertation entitled X° Categories and Grammatical Case Assignment in Finnish . This work provides a structural account for patterns of grammatical case in Finnish within the Principles and Parameters framework. The rich case and agreement morphology of Finnish make it an important language for testing hypotheses about the relationships between morphological case and abstract Case, and Case/case and agreement. In particular, several case 'splits' occur in Finnish which challenge standard theoretical accounts about the relationship between abstract and morphological case.
