It is important, therefore, that governmental policies not impede this process. Explore how sixteen entrepreneurs from Virginia and Maryland took risks to become successful. They focused on customer service, good employee relations, and other innovations to overcome the recent recession and other obstacles. These entrepreneurs and others like them prove that Adam Smith’s eighteenth-century “invisible hand” theory continues to be true. Entrepreneurs embrace change that is disruptive in order to deliver better products to customers. Ultimately, they enrich not only their own lives, but also the lives of their employees, their customers, and their communities. Good entrepreneurs can succeed in all areas. Whether it’s food service, health care, engineering or another field, they always find a way to get the job done. Book excerpt: 'Risk Takers', from Spring Harvest veteran Malcolm Duncan, challenges readers to take an Early Church attitude to living the Christian life - spirit-led and good news driven. The book of Acts is the story of the first Christians doing church together. It wasn't systematized, ordered and disinfected. It was risky. They didn't have a clue what was coming next - but they soon learned to depend on the Spirit. They tried, often failed, and then tried again. In his book, Malcolm re-captures God's vision for the Church and puts into the inescapable context of mission. The he highlights the common risks many stumble over including living in Gods provision, saying yes and embodying grace. This book is an exciting invitation to Christians to take off the attitudes the modern church, of tail-gating through trough life, following the crowd and taking the easy, well-used paths. Instead Malcolm encourages and inspires readers to do the right option rather than the easy one. God is moving in our communities: our job is to discover where and join in!

Book An Economist Walks into a Brothel

Download or read book An Economist Walks into a Brothel written by Allison Schrager and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Financial Times Book of the Month pick for April! Is it worth swimming in shark-infested waters to surf a 50-foot, career-record wave? Is it riskier to make an action movie or a horror movie? Should sex workers forfeit 50 percent of their income for added security or take a chance and keep the extra money? Most people wouldn't expect an economist to have an answer to these questions--or to other questions of daily life, such as who to date or how early to leave for the airport. But those people haven't met Allison Schrager, an economist and award-winning journalist who has spent her career examining how people manage risk in their lives and careers. Whether we realize it or not, we all take risks large and small every day. Even the most cautious among us cannot opt out--the question is always which risks to take, not whether to take them at all. What most of us don't know is how to measure those risks and maximize the chances of getting what we want out of life. In An Economist Walks into a Brothel, Schrager equips readers with five principles for dealing with risk, principles used by some of the world's most interesting risk takers. For instance, she interviews a professional poker player about how to stay rational when the stakes are high, a paparazzo in Manhattan about how to spot different kinds of risk, horse breeders in Kentucky about how to diversify risk and minimize losses, and a war general who led troops in Iraq about how to prepare for what we don't see coming. When you start to look at risky decisions through Schrager's new framework, you can increase the upside to any situation and better mitigate the downside.

Book A Gift From The Journey

Download or read book A Gift From The Journey written by Katherine Moore and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is from the musings in my personal reflective blog , A Gift From The Journey. In my musings it is my hope that the reader might find one aspect of my musings helpful in their lives. In life we can feel that we are alone in our experiences. It is my experience that there is always someone else that my have had a similar journey. The sense of isolation is lifted when we know that we are not the only one on any given path. In my musings I am often struck by how many similar themes that have happened in my life. Others have also shared some of those experiences/themes. I am grateful for the many paths on my journey and I hope that you will enjoy accompanying me on my journey. I have received many gifts in my life. There have been many individuals who have touched my spirit and in that moment my life was changed. In my life the bridge builders that I have known are responsible for much of my success. Without them I would have been blind when a new path opened. I have a personal belief that whether we have a positive moment in life or a negative moment in life that each moment becomes our teacher. It is in the transcending of these moments that our greatest gift of wisdom becomes our blessing. I hope that you enjoy this journey with me.

Book The Risk Takers

Download or read book The Risk Takers written by Leslie Simpson Hall and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author believes that genealogy (the study of one's ancestors) should involve far more than the mere gathering of names, dates and places. Our ancestors were real people who were so much more than a mere collection of birth, marriage and death dates. This book attempts to put 'meat on the bones' of the genealogical facts for four individuals, grandparents of the author. This book captures the family histories of the author's four grandparents, all born in the 1890s. Utilizing social history methods the author adds depth and detail to the simple facts of the two couples' vital statistics. By weaving the story of her grandparents lives with interesting information about how they lived their day-to-day lives and the social changes that impacted them, the author paints a fascinating picture that brings the individuals to life. Maternal grandparents, the Crislers, were Hoosiers, born in rural farming communities of northwestern Indiana in the early 1890s who left their familiar agrarian existence for life in the big city of Chicago just prior to the Great Depression. The Simpsons, her paternal grandparents, also born in the 1890s were city dwellers from Glasgow Scotland who emigrated to America settling in Chicago in the mid 1920s in search of steady employment and a better life.

Book The Risk Factor

Download or read book The Risk Factor written by Deborah Perry Piscione and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our most revered business icons of the last few decades are the bold risktakers, such as Richard Branson, Elon Musk, and Steve Jobs. Yet in today's stock market-driven economy, companies are playing it safe, with too many leaders focused on short-term gains, rather than value creation. The result is a static business culture that generates forgettable results—even as the world demands big solutions. So how do we get back in the risk-taking game? In The Risk Factor, Deborah Perry Piscione takes the most comprehensive look at this crucial, undervalued leadership behavior, and outlines how companies must support risk-taking across the enterprise. Exploring the heroes of risk, including entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and technologists, and the role risk-taking and failure tolerance play in their success, she makes a compelling case not only for big, flashy mergers or acquisitions, but also for unorthodox choices in everything from leadership to corporate social responsibility. Drawing on case studies from a wide range of now-famous giants (Netflix, Salesforce) and successful start-ups (Tesla, NetApp), she distills lessons for both new entrepreneurs and established companies whose longtime risk aversion has cost them more than they realize.

Book Savage Journey

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Richardson
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2023-04-25
  • ISBN : 0520395638
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Savage Journey written by Peter Richardson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superbly crafted study of Hunter S. Thompson's literary formation, achievement, and continuing relevance. Savage Journey is a "supremely crafted" study of Hunter S. Thompson's literary formation and achievement. Focusing on Thompson's influences, development, and unique model of authorship, Savage Journey argues that his literary formation was largely a San Francisco story. During the 1960s, Thompson rode with the Hell's Angels, explored the San Francisco counterculture, and met talented editors who shared his dissatisfaction with mainstream journalism. Peter Richardson traces Thompson's transition during this time from New Journalist to cofounder of Gonzo journalism. He also endorses Thompson's later claim that he was one of the best writers using the English language as both a musical instrument and a political weapon. Although Thompson's political commentary was often hyperbolic, Richardson shows that much of it was also prophetic. Fifty years after the publication of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and more than a decade after his death, Thompson's celebrity continues to obscure his literary achievement. This book refocuses our understanding of that achievement by mapping Thompson's influences, probing the development of his signature style, and tracing the reception of his major works. It concludes that Thompson was not only a gifted journalist, satirist, and media critic, but also the most distinctive American voice in the second half of the twentieth century.
