Book excerpt: Mantriji was many things to many people but mostly he was a teacher and sage, someone people revered because of his life-changing words and insights. It was impossible to know Mantriji and not be his student. This anthology serves as a memorial of this legendary figure as told by Andrea Olivera and 25 others, including Robert Svoboda, Simon Chokoisky, Alan Annand, Marla Meenakshi Joy, Ananda Shakti, and Gregory Brozek.A mysterious astrologer from the east who can divine how we get to our dreams, Mantriji's reputation is huge because of the many stories about him, his sayings, his teachings, the magical occurrences that surrounded his life. Imagine someone so in touch with time that he can tell you what your issues are based on the relative position of the planets at that very moment. Mantriji was this magical man. And although he was very human, he was always somehow above the fray. Mantriji leaves behind a rich legacy, inspiring the world through his students who venerated him and who are now immortalizing him in this beautiful, colourful book titled A Rishi Among Us. This is a collection of short stories and testimonials that details how Mantriji changed lives. Of course, Mantriji was most famously an astrologer, or 'Jyotishi' in the literal sense, an interpreter of light, but he also taught the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras, Sanskrit, and many other works through his own brand of Samkhya philosophy. Known for his profound one-liners and parables, Mantriji delighted us all with his wisdom, sense of humour, depth of insight, fondness for good food, and genuine appreciation for all things spiritual. We were honoured by his presence, we were fed by his teachings, we were humbled by his unconditional love, and now this legendary astrologer lives on through his students and will continue to resound through the ages.

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right? Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself. The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not? Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

Book The Mahabharata

  • Pages : 734 pages

Download or read book The Mahabharata written by Ramesh Menon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-07 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahabharata is the more recent of India's two great epics, and by far the longer. First composed by the Maharishi Vyasa in verse, it has come down the centuries in the timeless oral tradition of guru and sishya, profoundly influencing the history, culture, and art of not only the Indian subcontinent but most of south-east Asia. At 100,000 couplets, it is seven times as long as the Iliad and the Odyssey combined: far and away the greatest recorded epic known to man. The Mahabharata is the very Book of Life: in its variety, majesty and, also, in its violence and tragedy. It has been said that nothing exists that cannot be found within the pages of this awesome legend. The epic describes a great war of some 5000 years ago, and the events that led to it. The war on Kurukshetra sees ten million warriors slain, brings the dwapara yuga to an end, and ushers in a new and sinister age: this present kali yuga, modern times. At the heart of the Mahabharata nestles the Bhagavad Gita, the Song of God. Senayor ubhayor madhye, between two teeming armies, Krishna expounds the eternal dharma to his warrior of light, Arjuna. At one level, all the restless action of the Mahabharata is a quest for the Gita and its sacred stillness. After the carnage, it is the Gita that survives, immortal lotus floating upon the dark waters of desolation: the final secret With its magnificent cast of characters, human, demonic, and divine, and its riveting narrative, the Mahabharata continues to enchant readers and scholars the world over. This new rendering brings the epic to the contemporary reader in sparkling modern prose. It brings alive all the excitement, magic, and grandeur of the original - for our times.

KILLING GAME If you love the idea of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan in a world similar to Neil Gaiman's American Gods, this is an adventure for you. Dee doesn’t remember much before she crawled to her best friend, Mike’s doorstep, battered and bloody. She doesn’t remember what happened that made her supernaturally fast and strong. She just knows digging into those memories is too painful. Her friends are gone—probably dead—and she doesn’t want to think that she had anything to do with it. But the thing that did this isn’t willing to let her go. An attack on her life means she can’t keep hiding. A mysterious stranger who knows just enough means she has to trust someone. But will she trust enough, fast enough? Hamal breaks his own rules by coming to Dee’s aid. His mission was to watch, not interfere. But there’s something about her. Something he knows is worth putting himself in danger for. With more and more entering the Killing Game, she won’t be ready without him. Thrown into a world with immortal foes—some friends, some enemies—Dee must decide to play their game and find answers or choose a life of running. Little does she know, one holds the answers to her past—a Rishi whose wish started it all. We Are Forever Dee’s power sets her apart from the Soldiers she trains with. Both her similarities and differences have confused the lines of who she is, so even the Rishis remain unsure what to make of her. When she’s claimed as family, a new twist in her adventure comes to light. Excited to finally have answers, Dee struggles to adapt to this new information. But then Zibanitu, Hamal's silent patron, decides it’s his role to sort things out. Dee finds herself traveling to yet another location, this time visiting under lock-and-key. Is she a guest, or a prisoner? Friends and foes are difficult to identify. If she can hold out just a little bit longer, Dee’s determined she can wrest back control of her life. Will feelings of family overwrite her need for vengeance, or will she find death is her only option against those who are forever? Wish's Curse A year. Well, ten months. Ten months and Dee is no closer to finding her way than when she started. She can't help but wonder if the possibility exists for her to separate her life from the fantastical. At every turn four new obstacles rear. Worse, Zibanitu's plans may erase all her progress. It's a double-edged sword to hope the other Rishis still want to play. Their curiosity might be all there is to override their leader's claim. When friends turn foe, and enemies abound, Dee's mental health takes a plummet. Maybe it's time to throw in the towel and accept her role as pawn. Dee continues their game of push and pull. Games will change. Stakes will mount. An uncovered past reveals secrets none could have guessed, and could just be the thing that destroys Dee for good.

Book The Mahabharata of Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa Complete

Download or read book The Mahabharata of Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa Complete written by Anonymous and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 12302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Om! Having bowed down to Narayana and Nara, the most exalted male being, and also to the goddess Saraswati, must the word Jaya be uttered. Ugrasrava, the son of Lomaharshana, surnamed Sauti, well-versed in the Puranas, bending with humility, one day approached the great sages of rigid vows, sitting at their ease, who had attended the twelve years’ sacrifice of Saunaka, surnamed Kulapati, in the forest of Naimisha. Those ascetics, wishing to hear his wonderful narrations, presently began to address him who had thus arrived at that recluse abode of the inhabitants of the forest of Naimisha. Having been entertained with due respect by those holy men, he saluted those Munis (sages) with joined palms, even all of them, and inquired about the progress of their asceticism. Then all the ascetics being again seated, the son of Lomaharshana humbly occupied the seat that was assigned to him. Seeing that he was comfortably seated, and recovered from fatigue, one of the Rishis beginning the conversation, asked him, ‘Whence comest thou, O lotus-eyed Sauti, and where hast thou spent the time? Tell me, who ask thee, in detail.’ Accomplished in speech, Sauti, thus questioned, gave in the midst of that big assemblage of contemplative Munis a full and proper answer in words consonant with their mode of life. “Sauti said, ‘Having heard the diverse sacred and wonderful stories which were composed in his Mahabharata by Krishna-Dwaipayana, and which were recited in full by Vaisampayana at the Snake-sacrifice of the high-souled royal sage Janamejaya and in the presence also of that chief of Princes, the son of Parikshit, and having wandered about, visiting many sacred waters and holy shrines, I journeyed to the country venerated by the Dwijas (twice-born) and called Samantapanchaka where formerly was fought the battle between the children of Kuru and Pandu, and all the chiefs of the land ranged on either side. Thence, anxious to see you, I am come into your presence. Ye reverend sages, all of whom are to me as Brahma; ye greatly blessed who shine in this place of sacrifice with the splendour of the solar fire: ye who have concluded the silent meditations and have fed the holy fire; and yet who are sitting—without care, what, O ye Dwijas (twice-born), shall I repeat, shall I recount the sacred stories collected in the Puranas containing precepts of religious duty and of worldly profit, or the acts of illustrious saints and sovereigns of mankind?” “The Rishi replied, ‘The Purana, first promulgated by the great Rishi Dwaipayana, and which after having been heard both by the gods and the Brahmarshis was highly esteemed, being the most eminent narrative that exists, diversified both in diction and division, possessing subtile meanings logically combined, and gleaned from the Vedas, is a sacred work. Composed in elegant language, it includeth the subjects of other books. It is elucidated by other Shastras, and comprehendeth the sense of the four Vedas. We are desirous of hearing that history also called Bharata, the holy composition of the wonderful Vyasa, which dispelleth the fear of evil, just as it was cheerfully recited by the Rishi Vaisampayana, under the direction of Dwaipayana himself, at the snake-sacrifice of Raja Janamejaya?’
