I rode through France, over the Pyrenees and through Spain, over the Gibraltar Strait and into Morocco, west to the coast, south to Rabat and Casablanca, inland to Marrakesh, over the High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate, then to Zagora, Erfoud, Errachidia, Merzouga and Mhamid. Oh, and back again. I experienced the phenomenal 50 degree heat of the Sahara Desert in the summer whilst wearing thick, black motorbike leathers, I saw sights that will remain in my heart forever, I ate a dinner that left me with a bottom like a red hot bullet hole and I rode through rain like you've never seen before. So, why not join me for my adventure of a life time and enjoy my humour, my propensity for disaster and my lust for laughter. From the back: "After getting on my bike I became so excited that I just couldn't sit still, I was twitching like an idiot, talking non-stop and rocking in my seat. When I left it was all I could do to stop myself from screaming and punching the air. I somehow managed to control myself but about 50 yards later I looked in my mirror and saw my wife standing there, on her own watching me leave. Every little bit of excitement instantly turned to guilt and loneliness, the feeling was so strong that I almost blubbered in my helmet. However, I wasn't just leaving my wife, son and dog, I was also leaving my home, job and most importantly, familiarity. Everything from this point forward was going to be very different in a 'make it up as you go' kind of way. Well, that was the first 200 yards of my trip, only another 10,000 miles to go. This was going to be one hell of a ride!"

From 1970 to 1976, by himself and with three different partners, he hitchhiked literally thousands of miles. He just totaled it up. Including all the short US hitches and the three long ones, the two long Canadian hitches, and the European hitches, it totals out to about twenty-seven thousand miles. Thats longer than the circumference of our beloved planet Earth. Mostly in the early years, he hitchhiked with his best friend Jack. On one trip, they used Interstates 84, 90, and 94 from Milwaukee to Washington state and back, making side trips whenever they felt like it. On their longest trip, the Grand Loop, they hitchhiked west over 1,500 miles on Canadas Highway 1, then south the entire 1,300 miles of gorgeous coastal US Highway 101 and then to Texas and back home. That hitch was about seven thousand miles. Then in 1974, the author and Jack made it to Europe and Morocco too. Maybe you picked the author up. He usually set out from Milwaukee or Madison, Wisconsin. On day trips, hed be alone. When he wasnt with Jack, on longer trips, and some were weeks long; hed hitch with a girlfriend, or his sister. You get more rides (many more, and much quicker) accompanied by a woman. There was some danger, but not much. There was a lot of pot smoking. Those rides were fun, but essentially uneventful. He doesnt dwell on them much. So, he will do that here. The VW van that picked us up was full of kids about our age. They were drinking beer and smoking pot. They shared with us. It was free and we didnt want to be rude. We drank and smoked, got drunk and high, and enjoyed the ride. Believe me, there were plenty of those rides in the seventies. Maybe Ill stick one in the book every once and awhile. But mostly, I prefer the other, more unique rides and road experiences. They are genuine, mostly not overly dramatic, and from another place and time.

They cycle through the dry season in the Sudan with temperatures reaching 51 degrees, and then hit the rainy season in Tanzania with mud up to their knees and tents permanently wet through. You really feel for them! When the only landmark for miles is the skeleton of a camel that looks smugly happier than you imagine they do and you think it impossible to push those pedals around once more, even vicariously, something will jolt everything right back into perspective. From penis envy every time nature calls along the trail, to the "night of shame" from which no one is exempt by the time the finish line beckons; from the naked mile, to the 'who stole the shitter' shambles, Dodging Elephants will put a silly grin on your face. Maybe best to read this one in private or you might get some odd looks. Oh yes, and there's a near death experience with an elephant. You'll encounter the highs as well as the lows, with Africa forming a beautiful backdrop along the way. The race begins in Egypt on the eve of the Arab Spring, goes through the Sudan as the south declares independence and becomes the newest country on earth, continues through the worst drought for thirty years in Northern Kenya before landing on the pristine highways built by ubiquitous Chinese contractors, entering Zambia where old and new Africa collide, and ending up in South Africa at election time. This is a proper old-fashioned adventure. A romp through Africa told with humour and charm. As you read "The End," you'll either be reaching for your laptop to sign up for next year, or reaching for another nice glass of red wine and thanking your lucky stars that you don't have to!
