Book Revisioning John Chrysostom

Download or read book Revisioning John Chrysostom written by Chris de Wet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Revisioning John Chrysostom, Chris de Wet and Wendy Mayer harness and promote a new wave of scholarship on the life and works of this famous late-antique (c. 350-407 CE) preacher. New theories from the cognitive and neurosciences, cultural and sleep studies, and history of the emotions, among others, meld with reconsideration of lapsed approaches – his debt to Graeco-Roman paideia, philosophy, and now medicine – resulting in sometimes surprising and challenging conclusions. Together the chapters produce a fresh vision of John Chrysostom that moves beyond the often negative views of the 20th century and open up substantially new vistas for exploration.

Book The Greek Historia Monachorum in Aegypto

Download or read book The Greek Historia Monachorum in Aegypto written by Andrew Cain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek Historia Monachorum in Aegypto was one of the most widely read and disseminated Greek hagiographic texts during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. To this day it remains, alongside Athanasius' Life of Antony, one of the core primary sources for fourth-century Egyptian monasticism as well as one of the most fascinating, yet perplexing, pieces of monastic hagiography to survive from the entire patristic period. However, until now it has not received the intensive and sustained scholarly analysis that a monograph affords. In this study, Andrew Cain incorporates insights from source criticism, stylistic and rhetorical analysis, literary criticism, and historical, geographical, and theological studies in an attempt to break new ground and revise current scholarly orthodoxy about a broad range of interpretive issues and problems.

Book The De Legitimization of Violence in Sacred and Human Contexts

Download or read book The De Legitimization of Violence in Sacred and Human Contexts written by Muhammad Shafiq and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a multidisciplinary commentary on a wide range of religious traditions and their relationship to acts of violence. Hate and violence occur at every level of human interaction, as do peace and compassion. Scholars of religion have a particular obligation to make sense out of this situation, tracing its history and variables, and drawing lessons for the future. From the formative periods of the religious traditions to their application in the contemporary world, the essays in this volume interrogate the views on violence found within the traditions and provide examples of religious practices that exacerbate or ameliorate situations of conflict.

Book Papers Presented at the Thirteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies Held in Oxford 1999

This book was released on 2001 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers presented at the Thirteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1999 (see also Studia Patristica 34, 35, 36 and 38). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Book Monachus et sacerdos Asketische Konzeptualisierungen des Klerus im antiken Christentum

Download or read book Monachus et sacerdos Asketische Konzeptualisierungen des Klerus im antiken Christentum written by Christian Hornung and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In Monachus et sacerdos Christian Hornung examines the asceticism of the clergy in late antique Christianity. The theological justifications of asceticism, its demand in ecclesiastical discipline and its concrete implementation in pastoral care are analysed. A separate chapter is devoted to resistances against the enforcement of asceticism in the clergy. Hornung convincingly demonstrates that the asceticism is a broad process of increasing ascetic conceptualization of the clergy, which follows the professionalization in pre-Constantine time and leads to a differentiation of Christian life forms.
