Book American Orators of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book American Orators of the Twentieth Century written by Bernard K. Duffy and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1987 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A collection of encyclopedia-styled essays on 58 leading political, social, and religious speakers, American Orators of the Twentieth Century fills an enormous void in the literature on American public address. . . . Each assesses the orator's impact on American life and delineates such aspects of his or her speaking as argumentation, style, persuasive techniques, delivery, and methods of speech preparation. Appended to each essay is a chronology of the orator's major speeches and a list of information sources that includes leading research collections, speech anthologies, critical studies, and biographies. Given the large number of contributors, the entries are remarkably even in coverage and clarity. . . . On the whole, the editors have achieved a sensible balance among mainstream political leaders, religious orators, and spokesmen and spokeswomen for a variety of historical and contemporary causes. If we judge the book on the quality of the essays it contains, rather than on the alternative speakers it might have included, it deserves high marks. Scrupulously edited, superbly produced, and splendidly bound, it will be the standard reference work on its subject for years to come." -- Amazon.com.

Book The Religious Rhetoric of U S Presidential Candidates

Download or read book The Religious Rhetoric of U S Presidential Candidates written by Arnaud Vincent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on corpus linguistic methods of analysis, this book critically examines the "rhetorical God gap" in American political discourse between the Democratic and Republican parties. The volume investigates the claims (which have often not been substantiated by quantitative data in the literature and have tended to focus on particular genres of political discourse) that there is a correlation between a higher degree of religiosity in Republican political discourse and voting preferences for the party and that Democratic politicians should engage in similar discourse toward "closing" the gap. The book adopts a keyword approach, using such techniques as collocation analyses, concordance reading, and Bible-specific N-gram identification, toward the study of a corpus of general campaign speeches over a 50-year period, and links findings from this data with social and cultural contextual factors to provide a more informed understanding of rhetorical patterns in religiously laden political language. The volume showcases the value of corpus linguistic methods in interrogating claims around political language and their broader applicability in linguistic research, making this key reading for students and scholars in corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, American politics, and religious studies.

Book The Last Liberal Republican

Download or read book The Last Liberal Republican written by John Roy Price and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Liberal Republican is a memoir from one of Nixon’s senior domestic policy advisors. John Roy Price—a member of the moderate wing of the Republican Party, a cofounder of the Ripon Society, and an employee on Nelson Rockefeller’s campaigns—joined Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and later John D. Ehrlichman, in the Nixon White House to develop domestic policies, especially on welfare, hunger, and health. Based on those policies, and the internal White House struggles around them, Price places Nixon firmly in the liberal Republican tradition of President Theodore Roosevelt, New York governor Thomas E. Dewey, and President Dwight Eisenhower. Price makes a valuable contribution to our evolving scholarship and understanding of the Nixon presidency. Nixon himself lamented that he would be remembered only for Watergate and China. The Last Liberal Republican provides firsthand insight into key moments regarding Nixon’s political and policy challenges in the domestic social policy arena. Price offers rich detail on the extent to which Nixon and his staff straddled a precarious balance between a Democratic-controlled Congress and an increasingly powerful conservative tide in Republican politics. The Last Liberal Republican provides a blow-by-blow inside view of how Nixon surprised the Democrats and shocked conservatives with his ambitious proposal for a guaranteed family income. Beyond Nixon’s surprising embrace of what we today call universal basic income, the thirty-seventh president reordered and vastly expanded the patchy food stamp program he inherited and built nutrition education and children’s food services into schools. Richard Nixon even almost achieved a national health insurance program: fifty years ago, with a private sector framework as part of his generous benefits insurance coverage for all, Nixon included coverage of preexisting conditions, prescription drug coverage for all, and federal subsidies for those who could not afford the premiums. The Last Liberal Republican will be a valuable resource for presidency scholars who are studying Nixon, his policies, the state of the Republican Party, and how the Nixon years relate to the rise of the modern conservative movement.
