Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Revolutionary Maid: A Story of the Middle Period of the War for Independence IT has been the author's aim in this volume not only to follow the fortunes of a Revolutionary maid through trying scenes, but to outline the history Of the times as closely as might be consistent with a story for girls. Great care has been taken in the study of this period of the war for freedom, and it is hoped that the incidents will carry their weight as matters Of history, and that the importance of the campaign in the Middle States may be emphasized in the minds of those who read the story. Beyond this, it has been the author's endeavor to give a correct picture Of the manners and customs of that part of the country in which the scene is laid; to bring out the local coloring, and to draw the characters honestly, with a close regard to the effect of education and environment which at an early period began to indicate the variety of types which are now distinctly American. To her desire to please her girl friends the author adds a modest hope that the book may not be found uninteresting to older readers. Book Rereading the Revolution

Download or read book Rereading the Revolution written by Benjamin S. Lawson and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately fifty historical novels dealing with the American Revolution were published in the United States in the single ten-year period from 1896 to 1906. Benjamin Lawson critically examines the narrative strategies employed in these many novels, the ways in which fiction is made to serve the purpose of vivifying national history. The British conventions of the historical romance in one sense seem to preclude radical declarations of literary independence even in books purportedly about a war against Britain. Working within the formula, these many writers nonetheless created fictional plots which parallel and reflect the enveloping concerns of the War for Independence. Just as the war was sometimes viewed as an Anglo-American family squabble, these metaphorical narratives depict familial and love interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She was a rather tall, awkward, and strongly-built girl of about fifteen. This was the first impression the "maid" gave to her "mistresses," the Misses Leaf, when she entered their kitchen, accompanied by her mother, a widow and washer-woman, by name Mrs. Hand. I must confess, when they saw the damsel, the ladies felt a certain twinge of doubt as to whether they had not been rash in offering to take her; whether it would not have been wiser to have gone on in their old way - now, alas! grown into a very old way, so as almost to make them forget they had ever had any other - and done without a servant still.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Unwilling Maid: Being the History of Certain Episodes During the American Revolution in the Early Life of Mistress Betty Yorke, Born Wolcott So saying, he plunged hastily into a thicket of low-lying shrubs close at hand, and, throwing himself flat upon the ground under them, was comparatively secure from observation as long as he remained perfectly still. The next sound he heard was horses' feet, moving at a walk, and presently there came in View a spirited-looking bay mare and a gray pony, the riders being engaged in merry conversation. No, no, Betty, said the little girl of about nine years, who rode the pony; it is just here, or a few rods farther on, where we had the Maypole set last year, and I know I can find the herbs which Chloe wants near by on the shore of the pond. Let's dismount and tie the horses here, and you and I can search for them. It 's well I did not let you come alone, said the rider of the bay mare, laughing as she spoke. Truly, Miss Moppet, you are a courageous little maid to wish to venture in these woods Not that I am afraid, said Betty Wolcott suddenly, remembering the weight and dignity of her sixteen years as compared with her little sister, but in these troublous times father says it were well to be careful.
