Book A Revision of the Atomic Weights of Sodium and Chlorine Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Revision of the Atomic Weights of Sodium and Chlorine Classic Reprint written by Theodore William Richards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Revision of the Atomic Weights of Sodium and Chlorine The investigation of the atomic weights of the extremely common elements sodium and chlorine was undertaken because of an unac countable discrepancy which appeared in the composition of a sample of very pure sodic bromide, as compared with the results of Stas. This sodic bromide had been prepared for the purpose of determining the transition temperature of its hydrated crystals and a preparation which yielded a constant transition point, therefore giving evidence of great purity, nevertheless possessed a perceptibly lower combining weight than that indicated by Stas's results. Such a discrepancy as this was not to be passed over lightly. It indicated either an unknown constant impurity in our sodic bromide - and hence a possible error in our transition temperature - or else a flaw in the classical work of Stas. When the first cause of disagree ment had been carefully sought in vain, the second was pursued. Thus a physico-chemical investigation demanding great purity of materials led to a quantitative research of unexpected magnitude and in turn this quantitative investigation depended continually upon physico-chemical methods and considerations. In confirmation of previous work at Harvard, it was found that the physico-chemical conditions of experiment were of as serious import as the purity of the materials, and of far greater significance than an increase in the scale of operations. The essential circumstances here defined must receive consideration in any other research of a similar kind. Book Further Researches Concerning Atomic Weights of Potassium Silver Chlorine Bromine Nitrogen and Sulphur Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Further Researches Concerning Atomic Weights of Potassium, Silver, Chlorine, Bromine, Nitrogen, and SulphurThe atomic weight of potassium is a chemical constant of unusual inter est and significance. Standing, as it does, in the middle of the series of five atomic weights of the most electro-positive metals substances which exhibit in a highly marked degree both similarity and progressive change in properties this number must be Of unusual importance in the search for that undiscovered mathematical relationship which undoubtedly exists between these constants. Moreover, the atomic weight of potassium is essentially bound up with the atomic weights of oxygen, chlorine, and silver, this group forming a fundamental basis in the calculation of nearly all the other atomic weights; so that a change in the atomic weight of potassium has a widely ramified effect on the whole table of atomic weights. If any further evidence of this fact were needed, the recent paper of R. W. Gray1 would furnish it.The recent investigation upon the atomic weight of sodium by one of us in conjunction with Dr. R. C. Wells2 showed conclusively that Stas's work, upon which rested earlier knowledge, was somewhat at fault in several respects. The most serious of these errors were, first, the existence of impurity in Stas's silver; secondly, the fact that in his work solid salt was dropped into the argentic solution, causing occlusion of salt; and thirdlv inadequate knowledge concerning solutions of argentic chloride. In View Of these errors it seemed not impossible that a similar revision of potassium might likewise yield slightly lower results for potassium than had been found by this master of exact analysis. For this reason the present investigation was undertaken.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Determinations of Atomic Weights

Download or read book Determinations of Atomic Weights written by Theodore W. Richards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-19 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Determinations of Atomic Weights: Further Investigation Concerning the Atomic Weights of Silver, Lithium and Chlorine; The Harvard Determinations of Atomic Weights, Between 1870 and 1910; Methods Used in Precise Chemical Investigation Without attempting to give a complete historical discussion, the most important results of other investigations may be mentioned. The inter esting and valuable results of Dixon and Edgar, l of W. A. Noyes and H. C. P. Weber,2 and of Edgar alone3 upon the quantitative synthesis Of hydrochloric acid furnish less direct evidence upon the matter in hand, for they need the introduction of two other ratios, namely, that of hydrogen to oxygen and that of chlorine to silver, in order to solve the problem. Book The Geochemistry of Stable Chlorine and Bromine Isotopes

Download or read book The Geochemistry of Stable Chlorine and Bromine Isotopes written by Hans Eggenkamp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides detailed information on the history, analysis and applications of chlorine and bromine isotope geochemistry. Chlorine and bromine are geochemically unique as they prefer to exist as single charged negative ions. For this reason isotope fractionation reflects mostly processes that are not related to changes in the redox state and this fractionation is generally modest. The book will describe the processes that are most easily detected using these isotopes. Also isotope variations, and processes that cause them, measured in oxidised species such as perchlorates and in organic molecules will be described in this book.
