This is designed to address two primary issues that I have identified in my district: (a) decreasing enrollment in secondary instrumental music due to low numbers of students participating in middle school instrumental music programs, and (b) retention of students in elementary and middle school instrumental music programs. This curriculum is designed to address these issues by providing students an engaging and meaningful program to help get them excited about instrumental music and motivate them to continue their music study in middle school. This is a 36-week, subject-centered design curriculum that consists of 12 units for instrumental sixth grade band students entering their third year of study. The curriculum focuses on the importance and value that music has had on American society by offering students the opportunity to listen, create, perform, and respond to music in multiple genres throughout American history. It aims to increase intrinsic motivation, reduce stereotypes, and yield students with higher musicianship skills to have an aesthetic musical experience. It is expected that students who proceed through this curriculum of study will have higher order thinking skills and an increased sense of knowledge and interest which will ultimately transfer to higher student enrollment numbers in music education programs after elementary school. It is aligned with the new National Core Arts Standards for Music Education and the Maryland State music standards. The units include lessons outlines, suggested materials, assessments, and 9 sample lessons plans.
