Book excerpt: An International Symposium on Defects and Fracture was held in Tuczno, Poland, 13-17 October 1980 under the sponsorship of the Polish Academy of Sci ences and Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics, Lehigh University. Profes sor H. Zorski of the Academy and Professor G. C. Sih of Lehigh University were Co-Chairmen. The idea for the Symposium was initiated by the members of the Organizing Committee: G. C. Sih (Co-Chairman), H. Zorski (Co-Chairman), M. Matczynski (Secretary), D. R. Axelrad, R. Bullough, J. W. Provan and R. deWit. With the rapid development of high performance materials and their increasing use in vital structural applications, there is a need for a more in-depth under standing of the fundamentals associated with material behavior and failure. Al though this topic encompasses a wide range of disciplines, it is appropriate to narrow the discussion to material failures initiating from inherent, unavoidable defects or cracks. A balanced coverage of analysis and physics was achieved by inviting speakers with backgrounds in applied mechanics and solid state physics. The input was limited to a small group of specialists who had the opportunity to discuss not only past progress but also ideas for future research.

Book excerpt: HE ORIGINS of welding are buried in the depths of antiquity, T commencing with the forging of native gold and copper, progressing in the bronze age with the braze welding of castings, but not developing greatly until relatively recently. It has been this century, and the latter half in particular, that welding has developed to the stage where there are more than 100 variants. Furthermore, joining by welding has become such an efficient technique that much of our modem way oflife would not be possible without it. The giant oil rigs, built to withstand the rigours of the North Sea, the minute wire connectors in the computer and transistor, and the automobile and truck, could not exist were it not for welding processes. Originally a uniquely manual process, the needs of industry have this century required welding techniques which could be mechanised. Some processes, such as friction welding, were readily mechanised but the most flexible and adaptable fusion processes awaited develop ments which allowed a continuous wire to be rapidly fed into the fusion zone. These processes, such as MAG and submerged arc, rapidly gave rise to machines for welding, with many appearing before the Second World War.

Book excerpt: Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 25: Embrittlement of Engineering Alloys is an 11-chapter text that describes some situations that produce premature failure of several engineering alloys, including steels and nickel- and aluminum-base alloys. Chapters 1 to 3 consider situations where improper alloy composition, processing, and/or heat treatment can lead to a degradation of mechanical properties, even in the absence of an aggressive environment or an elevated temperature. Chapters 4 and 5 examine the effect of elevated temperatures on the mechanical properties of both ferrous and nonferrous alloys. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the effects of corrosive environments on both stressed and unstressed materials. In these environments anodic dissolution is the primary step that leads to failure. Chapters 8 to 10 deal with the effects of aggressive environments that lead to enhanced decohesion or embrittlement of the metal, such as hydrogen, liquid metal, and irradiation-induced embrittlement. Chapter 11 looks into the embrittlement phenomena occurring during welding, one of the most common processing conditions to which a material could be subjected. This book will prove useful to materials scientists and researchers.
