Book excerpt: The first section of this paper reviews the herring fishery on the west coast of Newfoundland, including total catches, catches in the purse seine fleet & the gillnet fleet, and target quota allocations. The second section presents information on the biological characteristics of herring from that area, based on samples taken from the commercial fishery. The information includes the proportion of each spawning stock in the commercial catch, age composition of the catch, & condition factor. The third section provides estimated abundance indices for the herring stock based on acoustic surveys, fishery logbook data, and fishermen's questionnaires. The final section discusses the status of the west coast herring stocks and presents a prognosis for the stocks.
