Book An Evaluation of Life History Parameters and Management of White tailed Deer in the Slope Region of North Dakota research

Download or read book An Evaluation of Life History Parameters and Management of White tailed Deer in the Slope Region of North Dakota research written by William Fredrick Jensen and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to collect information on specific life history parameters and evaluate accuracy of various population indices used for predicting changes in North Dakota's white-tailed deer population. The information gathered from this study will provide the missing data that has prevented us from developing and implementing an effective population modeling effort. Additionally, ecological information will be collected on adult female white-tailed deer and mule deer, as opportunity permits, to facilitate sound science-based management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography was compiled to partially update and include references previously cited in the "Management of the White-tailed Deer in North America". Excluded from this revision are generally accounts with no apparent, new contribution to management, regional population data, annual kill reports, articles on diseases and parasites, taxonomic and physiologic studies, and mimeographed material not easily obtainable. Most of the main forestry and wildlife periodicals and the indexing publications such as Biological Abstracts, Wildlife Review, and Dissertation Abstracts are covered. Abbreviations used follow, in general, those approved for the Journal of Wildlife Management.

Book Advanced White Tailed Deer Management

Download or read book Advanced White Tailed Deer Management written by Timothy Edward Fulbright and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, a cadre of researchers set out to determine what combination of supplemental or natural nutrition and white-tailed deer population density would produce the largest antlers on bucks without harming vegetation. They would come to call this combination “the sweet spot.” Over the course of their 15-year experiment, conducted through the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University–Kingsville, Timothy E. Fulbright, Charles A. DeYoung, David G. Hewitt, Don A. Draeger, and 25 graduate students tracked the effects of deer density and enhanced versus natural nutrition on vegetation conditions. Through wet years and dry, in a semiarid environment with frequent droughts, they observed deer nutrition and food habits and analyzed population dynamics. Containing the results of this landmark, longitudinal study, in keeping with the Kleberg Institute’s mission, this volume provides science-based information for enhancing the conservation and management of Texas wildlife. Advanced White-Tailed Deer Management: The Nutrition–Population Density Sweet Spot presents this critical research for the first time as a reference for hunters, landowners, wildlife managers, and all those who work closely with white-tailed deer populations. It explains the findings of the Comanche-Faith Project and the implications of these findings for white-tailed deer ecology and management throughout the range of the species with the goal of improving management.

Book The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation

Download or read book The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation written by Shane P. Mahoney and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foremost experts on the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation come together to discuss its role in the rescue, recovery, and future of our wildlife resources. At the end of the nineteenth century, North America suffered a catastrophic loss of wildlife driven by unbridled resource extraction, market hunting, and unrelenting subsistence killing. This crisis led powerful political forces in the United States and Canada to collaborate in the hopes of reversing the process, not merely halting the extinctions but returning wildlife to abundance. While there was great understanding of how to manage wildlife in Europe, where wildlife management was an old, mature profession, Continental methods depended on social values often unacceptable to North Americans. Even Canada, a loyal colony of England, abandoned wildlife management as practiced in the mother country and joined forces with like-minded Americans to develop a revolutionary system of wildlife conservation. In time, and surviving the close scrutiny and hard ongoing debate of open, democratic societies, this series of conservation practices became known as the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. In this book, editors Shane P. Mahoney and Valerius Geist, both leading authorities on the North American Model, bring together their expert colleagues to provide a comprehensive overview of the origins, achievements, and shortcomings of this highly successful conservation approach. This volume • reviews the emergence of conservation in late nineteenth–early twentieth century North America • provides detailed explorations of the Model's institutions, principles, laws, and policies • places the Model within ecological, cultural, and socioeconomic contexts • describes the many economic, social, and cultural benefits of wildlife restoration and management • addresses the Model's challenges and limitations while pointing to emerging opportunities for increasing inclusivity and optimizing implementation Studying the North American experience offers insight into how institutionalizing policies and laws while incentivizing citizen engagement can result in a resilient framework for conservation. Written for wildlife professionals, researchers, and students, this book explores the factors that helped fashion an enduring conservation system, one that has not only rescued, recovered, and sustainably utilized wildlife for over a century, but that has also advanced a significant economic driver and a greater scientific understanding of wildlife ecology.
