Book Economic and Social Development Into the XXI Century

Download or read book Economic and Social Development Into the XXI Century written by Louis Emmerij and published by IDB. This book was released on 1997 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What new directions will development take in the next century? A distinguished group of experts on economic development debated this question in late 1996. Their views of the emerging development consensus are presented in Economic and Social Development into the XXI Century. The authors give special attention to developing countries in Latin America and East Asia. Analyzing the growth of certain East Asian economies, they ask what can be emulated: state-engineered industrial policies? an export push? better initial income distribution? fiscal incentives to promote corporate growth? the region's successful land reform efforts, or the commitment to better education? While agreeing that equity is a major determinant of economic success, they differ regarding how to achieve it.

Book Pathways to Action Social Policy in the Caribbean

Download or read book Pathways to Action Social Policy in the Caribbean written by Aldrie Henry-Lee and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics of everyday life in the 21st century provides fertile ground for the resurgence of the importance of sociology. In this technologically driven, diverse, but interconnected global society, the study of social life, social change, communities and the quest to find empirical answers to complex social questions has re-emerged as a critical component to navigating the uncharted waters of a shifting social world and new social problems. Social Scientists are the ones who contribute the solutions to the issues that present themselves in the public domain. Discussions of gender, sexuality and identity, youth and popular culture, family life, globalisation, and a changing political landscape all inform the development of social institutions and the shaping of social policy, politics and public life. In Pathways to Action, the contributors, all experts in their fields, examine the contemporary social challenges in the Caribbean in the areas of demographic transition, early childhood development, health, poverty, labour policies and ageing, and put forward recommendations for sustainable social development. The shifting paradigms over the past 50 years since political independence are reviewed and examined in an international, regional and local context to showcase the development of social policy in the Caribbean in general and Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago in particular. The emerging recommendations, proposed to enhance the human development of the Caribbean citizenry, are valuable not only to researchers and policy analysts, but are also of practical importance to those engaged in social institutions, both large and small, whether they be commercial entities, NGOs, governance forums or political bodies. Pathways to Action provides a foundation for understanding the shifting social world and meeting the challenges peculiar to the Caribbean.

Book Poverty Reduction in the 1990s

Download or read book Poverty Reduction in the 1990s written by Alison Evans and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'World Development Report 1990: Poverty' provided the foundation for the World Bank strategy to help achieve global poverty reduction. This report is a contribution to the strategy review process. It examines the implementation of the 1990 strategy, maps changes against assessment of Bank performance at both the country and the project level and assesses the relevance of key elements of the 1990 strategy in light of new data and shifts in the development assistance environment. The report concludes that the 1990 strategy remains relevant but needs to be combined with a more comprehensive approach. Lessons from experience confirm the importance of a holistic approach to reach the poor more effectively. This includes a focus on local level institutions and building on existing institutional frameworks wherever possible and on working across sectors for maximum impact. The 1990 strategy and the operational guidelines based on it have failed to generate a clear emphasis on measuring and monitoring results. A critical test of the Bank's evolving poverty strategy will be the design of a credible framework for measuring the results of the Bank's country assistance, and helping to build local capacity for monitoring the impact of poverty reduction programmes. The report is in English with the foreword and the executive summary given in English, Spanish and French.

Book American Foreign Policy Toward Latin America in the 80s and 90s

Download or read book American Foreign Policy Toward Latin America in the 80s and 90s written by Howard J. Wiarda and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtful, controversial book, by one of the country's leading Latin America scholars, examines the fundamental tenets and ideologies behind America's policy towards Latin America over the course of the last three administrations. Howard Wiarda, who has served as a consultant for the State Department, the Department of the Army, the National Security Council, the Kissinger Commission, and the White House, is ideally situated to provide an insider account of policy decisions and process during the Reagan-Bush era. The combination of Wiarda's academic background and his hands-on knowledge of Washington practices and processes results in a volume that is extremely readable and will serve as a vital link between the scholarly and policymaking communities. Wiarda supplements his incisive analysis on the role of the military in Latin America, shifting U.S. strategic policy, democracy and human rights, and the problems presented by dictators in decline with illuminating case studies of Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, South America, and the Caribbean. The result is a book that will be of interest to both scholars and students of American foreign policy and Latin American studies, as well as policymakers and analysts.
