Book Light Rail Transit in the United States Since 1980

Download or read book Light Rail Transit in the United States Since 1980 written by Jason Bernard Greenberg and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a comparative analysis of light rail transit systems that began operating in the United States from 1981 to 1996, and it argues that when light rail transit operations are compared, the results cannot be generalized. There is great variability among ten light rail operations in ridership, operational structure, and cost and service efficiency; attempts to explain for the variation by using census data revealed even further variability. This result is a departure from the literature, which frequently forms definitive conclusions about the effectiveness of light rail transit. The impact of these results makes policy decisions difficult to undertake since the directives may not be applicable for every situation. The dissertation is divided into the following chapters: Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to the topic. Chapter 2 is an introduction to light rail transit in the United States and it relies on various forms of previous works, so it also introduces some of the light rail transit literature. Chapter 3 is a specific literature review focusing on the feasibility, capacity, cost versus ridership, and development of light rail new starts in the United States. Chapter 4 introduces the methodology of the study and discusses the transportation resources used in Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is the analysis of the National Transit Database, the body of statistics used to analyze the ten cases. This chapter includes approximately 36 tables to accompany the analysis of each system's ridership and operation size as well as each operation's service effectiveness, service efficiency, and cost efficiency. Chapter 6 focuses on travel behavior and attempts to explain the results of Chapter 5 by using U.S. Census Bureau data as well as standardized data from other transportation and traffic studies. Chapter 7 concludes the study with overall findings and offers policy recommendations.

Book Urban Mobility Report 2004

Download or read book Urban Mobility Report 2004 written by David Schrank and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congestion continues to grow in America¿s urban areas. This report presents details on the 2004 trends, findings and what can be done to address the growing transportation problems. Trend data from 1982 to 2002 for 85 urban areas provides both a local view and a national perspective on the growth and extent of traffic congestion. The 2004 Report provides clear evidence that the time for improvements has arrived. Communicating the congestion levels and the need for improvements is a goal of this report. The decisions about which, and how much, improvement to fund will be made at the local level according to a variety of goals, but there are some broad conclusions that can be drawn from this database. Book Trains Buses People

Download or read book Trains Buses People written by Christof Spieler and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the best transit cities in the US? The best Bus Rapid Transit lines? The most useless rail transit lines? The missed opportunities? In the US, the 25 largest metropolitan areas and many smaller cities have fixed guideway transit—rail or bus rapid transit. Nearly all of them are talking about expanding. Yet discussions about transit are still remarkably unsophisticated. To build good transit, the discussion needs to focus on what matters—quality of service (not the technology that delivers it), all kinds of transit riders, the role of buildings, streets and sidewalks, and, above all, getting transit in the right places. Christof Spieler has spent over a decade advocating for transit as a writer, community leader, urban planner, transit board member, and enthusiast. He strongly believes that just about anyone—regardless of training or experience—can identify what makes good transit with the right information. In the fun and accessible Trains, Buses, People: An Opinionated Atlas of US Transit, Spieler shows how cities can build successful transit. He profiles the 47 metropolitan areas in the US that have rail transit or BRT, using data, photos, and maps for easy comparison. The best and worst systems are ranked and Spieler offers analysis of how geography, politics, and history complicate transit planning. He shows how the unique circumstances of every city have resulted in very different transit systems. Using appealing visuals, Trains, Buses, People is intended for non-experts—it will help any citizen, professional, or policymaker with a vested interest evaluate a transit proposal and understand what makes transit effective. While the book is built on data, it has a strong point of view. Spieler takes an honest look at what makes good and bad transit and is not afraid to look at what went wrong. He explains broad concepts, but recognizes all of the technical, geographical, and political difficulties of building transit in the real world. In the end,Trains, Buses, People shows that it is possible with the right tools to build good transit.

Book Romance of the Rails

Download or read book Romance of the Rails written by Randal O'Toole and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American transportation has undergone many technological revolutions: from sailing ships to steam ships; from passenger trains and urban rail transit to airplanes and automobiles. Normally, the government has allowed and even encouraged these revolutions, but for some reason the federal government is spending billions of dollars trying to preserve and build obsolete rail transit and passenger train lines, including high-speed trains that cost more but are less than half as fast as flying. O'Toole asks why passenger trains have been singled out -- and whether this policy makes sense. -- adapted from jacket

Book Light Rail and Changing Development Patterns in Dallas San Diego and Jersey City

Download or read book Light Rail and Changing Development Patterns in Dallas San Diego and Jersey City written by Joseph S. Buga and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1985 and 2014, 19 metropolitan areas in the United States built new light rail systems at a cost of over $30 billion. The US Department of Transportation funded a major share of the costs, with support from state and local public funding sources. This dissertation begins by providing an introduction to this era of light rail projects by placing them in the historical context of surface transit improvements in the United States. A compendium of the 1985 to 2014 light rail systems is then presented. Also included is a review of the various federal laws that have spurred light rail development over the period. In the dissertation, the establishment and expansion of light rail in three case study cities, San Diego, Dallas and Jersey City, is examined with respect to land use and planning The San Diego Trolley began operating in 1986, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in 1995 and the Hudson Bergen Light Rail in Jersey City in 2000. Structured interviews were conducted with developers of projects along these transit lines to gain insight into their decisions to locate near light rail and their interaction with land use and transit agency planners. Developers generally viewed light rail as an additional amenity, not as a reason in and of itself to pursue a project. In several instances, light rail was not considered at all in the establishment of a project and in one project the developer viewed it as a negative factor. Coordination between local land use planning and the transit agencies which established light rail varied among the three case study cities: San Diego conducted the most comprehensive effort by virtue of its local neighborhood planning entities and its participation in a regional planning organization. During the mid 1990s and into the early 2000, new urbanism, smart growth and transit oriented development emerged as new land use planning theories. In the dissertation, these planning theories are analyzed and their similarities and differences identified. To assess how these theories and their principles were incorporated into the planning of light rail systems, planning documents associated with the San Diego, Dallas and Jersey City light rail systems were reviewed, and structured interviews with local land use planners and transit planners in these cities were conducted. The study revealed that many principles associated with the planning theories were incorporated into the planning documents; however, there are no explicit references to the theories. Developers were uniformly aware of the principles associated with the new planning theories. Site visits were made to each of the cities and information was collected at nine projects along the light rail routes in 2009 and 2010. A planning theories scorecard was used to evaluate how the elements of new urbanism, smart growth and transit oriented development, were incorporated into various selected projects. Both the Dallas and San Diego transit agencies promoted joint development opportunities at light rail stations. Only San Diego had success in such efforts. The federal government has begun to encourage more public private partnerships as a way of attracting private capital to development of light rail. Since their inception in the mid 1990s, the three planning theories have gained wide acceptance among government officials, planners and developers. This acceptance has led to a blending of the theories as many principles are included in multiple theories.
