Book The Impact of Pastoral Legislation on Equitable and Sustainable Natural Resource Management in Guinea

Download or read book The Impact of Pastoral Legislation on Equitable and Sustainable Natural Resource Management in Guinea written by Oussouby Touré and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the findings of a study of the impact of Guinean pastoral legislation carried out on behalf of IIED as part of its sub-regional "Making Decentralisation Work" programme. Experience in Guinea shows that grassroots ownership of the pastoral legislation is essential if it is to be applied effectively. In order to meet this challenge herders' organisations need to be more aware of and engage with the issues involved in natural resource management and ongoing processes of decentralisation. The evaluation of the experience in Guinea indicates that formulating legislation or translating it into national languages is not enough to ensure its dissemination and appropriation by local communities.

Book Conflict Livelihoods and Poverty in Guinea Bissau

Download or read book Conflict Livelihoods and Poverty in Guinea Bissau written by Boubacar-Sid Barry and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict, Livelihoods, and Poverty in Guinea-Bissau is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. Conflict and political instability have weakened Guinea-Bissau's productive infrastructure considerably during the past three decades. This situation contributes to an increase in the degree of vulnerability of the population, especially in rural areas where most economic activities continue to take place. As growth has been weak, poverty levels remain high. This book provides a collection of papers on conflict, livelihoods, and poverty in Guinea-Bissau based on both the nationally representative 2002 household survey and a small scale survey with both quantitative and qualitative components implemented in 2004. The chapters deal with growth and poverty, institutions and social networks, the determinants of poverty, the means of livelihoods of the population, and finally cashew production and taxation. The contributors, including legal scholars, development practitioners, and financial experts, analyze the goals, explore ways in which they can be achieved, and examine ways that recent relevant law and justice programs have worked. A wide array of topics are covered, from the legal aspects of collecting and monitoring vital data, to improving legal identity programs, to creating innovative health care regulation, to legal and judicial reform, to providing private sector†“financing of public education projects to the provision of global public goods. Additionally, a special section on Europe looks at financial crisis management, enforcement of court decisions and the workings of the European Court of Justice. The opportunities and challenges of the 2030 agenda are many. This volume looks at both from multiple perspectives, demonstrating how sustainable development can go forward in a way in which everyone benefits.

Book The World Bank Legal Review Volume 2 Law Equity and Development

Download or read book The World Bank Legal Review Volume 2 Law Equity and Development written by The World Bank and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Bank Legal Review is a publication for policy makers and their advisers, attorneys, and other professionals engaged in the field of international development. It offers a combination of legal scholarship, lessons from experience, legal developments, and recent research on the many ways in which the application of the law and the improvement of justice systems promote poverty reduction, economic development, and the rule of law. In keeping with the theme of the World Development Report 2006: Equity and Development, and following the success of the World Bank Group’s Legal Forum on “Law, Equity, and Development” in December 2005, volume 2 of The World Bank Legal Review focuses on issues of equity and development. The volume draws together some of the key ideas of the Legal Forum, including articles by many of its distinguished participants, and explores the role of equity in the development process, highlighting how legal and regulatory frameworks and equitable justice systems can do much to level the playing field in the political, economic, and sociocultural domains, as well as how they can reinforce existing inequalities. Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of this endeavour, Law, Equity and Development contains work by academics and practitioners in law, criminal justice, economics, human rights, social development, cultural studies, and anthropology.
