Book excerpt: The Canadian Wildlife Service developed a draft manual for the development of recovery plans which mandates that recovery strategies under SARA include an identification of the threats to the survival of the species and strategies to mitigate these threats. [...] To foster effective recovery efforts, the Sierra Club of Canada has commissioned the evaluation of provincial recovery plans to assess the degree to which they fulfill the obligations of SARA, such as critical habitat identification and adequate identification of strategies for mitigating threats to habitat. [...] The introduction, conclusion, and next steps are those of the Sierra Club of Canada and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. [...] Populations are the unit of biological conservation, and the main focus of the Strategy (appropriately enough) is on woodland caribou populations in Manitoba, denoted as ten ranges across the province. [...] This focus on calving and post-calving is appropriate because this is the time when: (1) the need for space is at its zenith, due to the "spacing out" strategy of reproductive adult females, the defining feature of woodland caribou (Bergerud 1996); (2) the fate of each calf is determined, because most mortality occurs within the first 6 weeks of life (Mahoney et al.

This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Recovery plans are a comprehensive compilation of goals, objectives, strategies and actions, both short- and long-term, required to maintain or restore the Threatened or Endangered species. These plans are provided by the recovery team as advice to the Minister responsible for fish and wildlife management (the Minister) and to all Albertans. ... This recovery plan identifies effective and feasible strategies and actions necessary to achieve woodland caribou recovery and removal from the list of provincially threatened species. The recovery plan goals are linked to the rationale for listing the species in Alberta, and focus on: 1) achieving self-sustaining woodland caribou herds; 2) maintaining the distribution of caribou in Alberta; and 3) ensuring habitat requirements are met for woodland caribou over the long-term throughout caribou ranges in the province."--Document.

Download or read book Action Plan for the Woodland Caribou Rangifer Tarandus Caribou Boreal Population in Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Boreal caribou is an iconic but threatened species in Canada and holds special significance for Indigenous peoples and other Canadians; its continued decline concerns us all. Building on the Federal Recovery Strategy for Boreal Caribou (2012), the federal government will continue to do its part to recover boreal caribou. It has developed this Action Plan to describe the federal government's contribution to the recovery efforts. There are three key pillars in the Action Plan: knowledge to support recovery; recovery and protection; and reporting on progress. The Action Plan is partial at this time since it does not address all of the measures, as required in the Species at Risk Act (SARA). Fulfillment of SARA requirements would be accomplished as provinces/territories complete their range plans or similar documents, which can be adopted over time as subsequent action plans for the species"--Executive summary, p. ii.
