Book excerpt: On its 30th anniversary, public acceptance of Head Start is high, yet understanding of its goals is low, and evaluation research is limited in quality and scope. In this book, a roundtable of representatives from government, universities, medicine, and family support agencies identifies a set of research possibilities to generate a broader understanding of the effects of Head Start on families and children. Among the important issues discussed are the ethnic and linguistic diversity of Head Start families, the social conditions of the community context, and the implications of the changing economic landscape for both families and Head Start itself.

Book The Hidden History of Head Start

Download or read book The Hidden History of Head Start written by Edward Zigler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently enrolling approximately 900,000 poor children each year, Head Start has served 25 million children and their families since it was established 44 years ago. Presidents and policymakers have embraced and scorned it. At times scientists have misguided it and the media has misunderstood it. Despite its longevity and renown, much of Head Start's story has never been disclosed to the general public. The Hidden History of Head Start is a detailed account of this remarkable program. Surveying projects that were forerunners of Head Start, its birth during the Johnson administration, its fate during the presidency of George W. Bush, and the many years between--as well as what the future may hold in store for Head Start--Edward Zigler and Sally Styfco offer an inside view of the program's decades of service, detailing the ever-changing waves of politics, ideology, science, media interest, and public mood that oftentimes threatened the program's very existence. Providing a balanced assessment of Head Start's effectiveness, which has been a matter of debate since its inception, the authors also strive to answer questions that continue to pervade discussions about the program and its future. For example, why is Head Start, a leader of early childhood services, still struggling to prove itself? Why does it serve such a narrow segment of the population? And how can Head Start continue its mission as universal preschool becomes a reality? The Hidden History of Head Start will be of great importance to those who shape Head Start's future, and to those who wish to develop, research, and implement new early childhood programs. Students, historians, and scholars in the fields of early intervention and developmental science, as well as policymakers, will find here an invaluable resource as well as a fascinating chronicle of one of the foremost social programs in US history.

Book Into Adulthood

Download or read book Into Adulthood written by Sherri Oden and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the Long-Term Benefits of Head Start (LTBHS) study designed to address questions regarding the long-term effects of the Head Start program on the children and families served. Following the introduction, Chapter 2 presents a review of the research on Head Start, focusing on Head Start Planned Variation research, major integrative reviews demonstrating improved school readiness of Head Start children and the elementary school fade-out effect, and reviews of non-Head Start demonstration models. Chapter 3 describes the LTBHS study's methodology and design, including the makeup of the diverse sample of 622 young adults who participated in Head Start in 1970-71; presents the strategies used to identify and locate study subjects for follow-up; and concludes with an overview of the participant interviews and data collected from school, public assistance, and criminal records. Chapter 4 explains how High/Scope researchers arrived at the LTBHS study's core variables. Chapter 5 summarizes findings on individual characteristics and family background. Chapter 6 summarizes how Head Start children, compared with non-Head Start children, fared into their young adult years. Chapter 7 summarizes the LTBHS study findings and discusses implications for future Head Start development and research. Findings indicated that some groups of study participants were better off as a result of their Head Start participation. Findings also indicated potential benefits for the Model (High/Scope) Head Start group versus the regular Head Start group. Although most findings were not of the expected magnitude or statistical significance, the pattern of findings across most of the educational and life-situational outcome variables had the same direction as the pattern of significant findings obtained in the High/Scope Perry Preschool study and the High/Scope Preschool Curriculum Comparison study. The report's six appendices include resources in locating study participants, definitions for the study's core variables, additional data tables, and additional findings. Four commentaries on Head Start and the LTBHS study conclude the report. (Contains 121 references.) (KB)
