Book The Future of Rural Development

Download or read book The Future of Rural Development written by Hans Gsanger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a practitioner's account of international experiences with rural development seen from a German angle. It argues for a development co-operation for rural areas that actively supports popular participation, beneficiaries' self-organization, decentralization and, consequently, smaller self-managed (para)projects rather than large, top-down organized rural development projects.

Book Making a Difference

Download or read book Making a Difference written by D. Hulme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Western aid budgets are slashed and government involvement with aid programmes reduced, NGOs in the voluntary sector are finding themselves taking an ever-increasing share of development work overseas. As they do so, they are forced to grow and to assume new responsibilities, taking more important and wide-ranging decisions - in many cases, without having had the chance to step back and review the options before them and the best ways of maximizing the impact they make. This collection of essays explores the strategies available to NGOs to enhance their development work, reviewing the ways that options can be understood, appropriate programmes and likely problems.

Book Implementing Rural Development Projects

Download or read book Implementing Rural Development Projects written by Elliott R Morss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with problems frequently encoun-tered by agencies, managers, and technicians who try to implement large-scale development projects. Specifically, it focuses on the implementation problems associated with projects sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) and the World Bank in developing countries. Some historical background on how implementation problems became a focus of concern is presented below. Development assistance on a significant scale started with Marshall Plan aid to reconstruct Western Europe following World War II. [1] In that case, the donor (the United States) asked not to be part of the process that determined how the money was to be spent. Instead, the United States asked the West European countries to establish their own priorities for assistance (which they did after a considerable amount of inter-country negotiation).

Book Assault on Rural Poverty

Download or read book Assault on Rural Poverty written by Haileleul Getahun and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2001 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Assault on Rural Poverty, Haileleul Getahun analyzes the various causes of rural poverty and constraints impeding increased agricultural productivity during the last four decades in Ethiopia, under three different regimes. Getahun examines the feudalistic system under Emperor Haile Selassie, the command economic system of the military junta led by Mengistu Haile Mariam, and the current capitalist system of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia led by Meles Zenawi. Getahun discusses the lessons drawn from Ethiopian experience during these three regimes, as well as from other African and Asian countries. These provide the basis for recommending a small farmer-led agricultural and rural development strategy that, if implemented, would alleviate rural poverty in Ethiopia. The author maintains that the keys for successful development are the provision of institutional savings and credit for small-scale farmers and small business owners; the deep involvement of the community in project planning, implementation, evaluation and sharing of the benefits; and the use of development support communication for motivation, information dissemination, and training. Getahun argues strongly that ethnic politics in Ethiopia are destructive to Ethiopian society and militates against sustainable development. Rather, the path to peace and sustainable development requires that ethnic politics be scrapped and replaced by a genuinely democratic and widely acceptable system of governance.

Book Potentials for forestry and political drivers in integrated rural development policy

Download or read book Potentials for forestry and political drivers in integrated rural development policy written by Lukas Giessen and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2010 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
