Book The Virtual Crack Closure Technique History Approach and Applications

Download or read book The Virtual Crack Closure Technique History Approach and Applications written by Ronald Krueger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection represents a single volume of technical papers presented at the Annual International DIC Society Conference and SEM Fall Conference organized by the Society for Experimental Mechanics and Sandia National Laboratories and held in Philadelphia, PA, November 7-10, 2016. The volume presents early findings from experimental, standards development and various other investigations concerning digital image correlation - an important area within Experimental Mechanics. The area of Digital Image Correlation has been an integral track within the SEM Annual Conference spearheaded by Professor Michael Sutton from the University of South Carolina. In 2016, the SEM and Sandia joined their collaborative strengths to launch a standing fall meeting focusing specifically on developments in the area of Digital Image Correlation. The contributed papers within this volume span numerous technical aspects of DIC including standards development for the industry.

Book Small Fatigue Cracks

Download or read book Small Fatigue Cracks written by K.S. Ravichandran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the fully peer-reviewed papers presented at the Third Engineering Foundation Conference on Small Fatigue Cracks, held under the chairmanship of K.S. Ravichandran and Y. Murakami during December 6-11, 1998, at the Turtle Bay Hilton, Oahu, Hawaii. This book presents a state-of-the-art description of the mechanics, mechanisms and applications of small fatigue cracks by most of the world's leading experts in this field. Topics ranging from the mechanisms of crack initiation, small crack behavior in metallic, intermetallic, ceramic and composite materials, experimental measurement, mechanistic and theoretical models, to the role of small cracks in fretting fatigue and the application of small crack results to the aging aircraft and high-cycle fatigue problems, are covered.

Book On Crack Closure in Fatigue Crack Growth

Download or read book On Crack Closure in Fatigue Crack Growth written by AJ. McEvily and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief review of the various forms of closure is given, and the relative importance of plasticity-induced closure and roughness-induced closure is considered. On the basis of the lack of a thickness effect and an insensitivity to R in the absence of closure it is concluded that plasticity-induced closure plays a relatively minor role in affecting the rate of fatigue crack propagation with the exception of overload effects. A new form of closure, transitional closure is described and is shown to affect importantly the rate of fatigue crack growth upon a change in R ratio. The closure process for a short crack approaching a grain boundary is also discussed.

Book Advanced Surface Enhancement

Download or read book Advanced Surface Enhancement written by Sho Itoh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the first INCASE conference, organised by ARTC at A*STAR, Singapore. It provides a comprehensive review of recent advances in surface enhancement processes and strategies employed to assess their impact on materials properties and performance. As cyber-physical systems are becoming more and more relevant in manufacturing, it focuses on assessing the readiness of current technologies for future transformations, such as Industry 4.0, identifying the opportunities and challenges, and exploring ways to address them. Written by researchers, practising engineering and industry experts, the book bridges the gap between research and manufacturing, promoting technology adoption in industry and innovative ideas to prepare it for the future.

Book Fatigue and Fracture of Weldments

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture of Weldments written by Uwe Zerbst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and thorough guide to those readers who are lost in the often-confusing context of weld fatigue. It presents straightforward information on the fracture mechanics and material background of weld fatigue, starting with fatigue crack initiation and short cracks, before moving on to long cracks, crack closure, crack growth and threshold, residual stress, stress concentration, the stress intensity factor, J-integral, multiple cracks, weld geometries and defects, microstructural parameters including HAZ, and cyclic stress-strain behavior. The book treats all of these essential and mutually interacting parameters using a unique form of analysis.

Book Analysis of Fatigue Crack Closure and Thresholds

Download or read book Analysis of Fatigue Crack Closure and Thresholds written by K. Sadananda and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical examination of fatigue crack closure concepts indicates that (a) procedures commonly followed in estimating crack closure are in error, (b) complete premature crack closure occurs only when cracks are completely filled with oxides or corrosion products, (d) such closure manifests as an infinite slope in the load-displacement (crack mouth opening) curves; rarely observed in experiments, (e) asperities cause only local closure, (f) their contribution is less significant than is assumed and (g) plasticity does not contribute to closure. New concepts are developed to explain fatigue phenomena hitherto attributed to crack closure. Implications of these concepts to understand fatigue crack growth are discussed.

Book Analysis of Crack Closure Under Plane Strain Conditions

Download or read book Analysis of Crack Closure Under Plane Strain Conditions written by NA. Fleck and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elastic-perfectly plastic finite-element analysis has been conducted of plasticity-induced crack closure under plane strain conditions. At a load ratio R ( = Kmin/Kmax) of zero, crack closure was observed in a center-cracked panel but not in a bend specimen. Crack closure in the center-cracked panel occurred for a transient period of growth as the crack evolved from the state of a stationary crack to the steady state of a growing fatigue crack. The influence of specimen geometry upon closure response was rationalized in terms of the "T-stress." This stress is the nonsingular constant second term in the near tip series expansion of the normal stress parallel to the crack plane. No closure was observed in the center-cracked panel for R ? 0.3. The crack opening response and plastic zone distribution of a growing fatigue crack were compared with those of a cyclically loaded stationary crack and a statically loaded tearing crack. Some of the features of the solution for the growing fatigue crack were similar to the solution for a stationary crack, while other features bore more resemblance to those of a tearing crack.
