Download or read book Water Quality Modeling written by Steven C. McCutcheon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating work is divided into two main sections. Part I reviews the basic principles of water movement in channels and the mass balance approach common to most models. It also covers the practical usefulness, model peer review, and guidance on model selection and calibration. Part II discusses flow simulation and prediction of time of travel, dye tracing and mixing, heat balance and temperature modeling, and reaeration and volatilization. This interesting, easy-to-read volume includes comprehensive reviews for the use of fluorescent water tracing dyes, longitudinal dispersion, evaporation and wind speed functions, prediction of saturation concentrations of dissolved oxygen, and reaeration coefficients. This book furnishes the reader with appendices which provide a synopsis of available computer models and gives a comprehensive listing of methods used to measure flow rates in rivers, tributaries, and pipes and channels introducing wastewaters into streams. This volume is a valuable, indispensable reference for all researchers, instructors, students in advanced environmental modeling courses, and practicing engineers.

Download or read book Developments in Environmental Modelling written by S.E. Jorgensen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of models to assess water quality is becoming increasingly important worldwide. In order to be able to develop a good model, it is necessary to have a good quantitative and ecological description of physical, chemical and biological processes in ecosystems. Such descriptions may be called ``submodels''. This book presents the most important, but not all, submodels applied in water quality modelling. Each chapter deals with a specific physical process and covers its importance, the most applicable submodels (and how to select one), parameter values and their determination, and future research needs. The book will be an excellent reference source for environmental engineers, ecological modellers and all those interested in the modelling of water quality systems.

Download or read book Transport Processes in Lakes and Oceans written by R. Gibbs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eighty-Second National Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, from August 29 through September 1, 1976, had as one of its themes the topic of transport processes. One of the sessions related to this theme was "Transport Processes in the Oceans" chaired by R. P. Shaw and R. J. Gibbs. This session was devoted to the study of transport processes and their hydrodynamic modeling in large water bodies such as oceans and lakes; transport of both dissolved and solid material was con sidered. The interest developed at the session led to the conclu sion that the papers presented there should be published as a set rather than dispersed among the various technical journals that rep resent the wide variety of technical affiliations of the authors. This variety, in fact, is typical of this particular field with con tributors identified as chemical engineers, civil engineers, environ~ mental engineers, mechanical engineers, oceanographers and applied mechanicians to name just a few. Such an interdisciplinary area re quires more effort in keeping abreast of developments than do the traditional areas, since new material may be developed and presented in a wide range of technical journals and professional meetings.

Book excerpt: A primary aim of the NATO Science Committee since its estab lishment in 1958 has been to· further international scientific co operation among scientists from the member countries of the Alliance. Almost all fields of basic science have received sub stantial support for the purposes of enhancing exchange of inform ation, providing opportunities for advanced instruction and collaborative research. Up to 1977, more than 10,000 fellowships have been awarded to allow scientists to complete their scientific education in another country and more than 1,500 joint research projects involving scientists in at least two different countries per project have been financed by the Committee. In addition, more than 800 advanced study institutes have been held under NATO auspices which have allowed more than sixty thousand scientists to get together to hear leading scientists lecture on advanced research topics on the frontier of research of many disciplines and to discuss the most recent results of their research activi ties. The Science Committee also identifies specific areas as deserving special encouragement or preferential support for limited periods. A variety of mechanisms - research grants, study visits, conferences, etc. - is utilized to stimulate greater international activity. This effort is embodied in several individual programmes, each guided by a special programme panel of internationally eminent experts. Air-sea interaction is one of these programmes.
