Book A Review of Available Free Field Seismic Data from Underground Nuclear Explosions in Salt and Granite

Download or read book A Review of Available Free Field Seismic Data from Underground Nuclear Explosions in Salt and Granite written by J. R. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the progress that has been achieved to date in a continuing effort to compile a complete sample of free-field ground motion data from underground nuclear tests in salt and granite emplacement media. The primary objective of the study has been to collect the available data into a homogeneous data base which will serve as a useful reference for investigators who are attempting to define theoretical seismic source models for contained explosions in these two media. In Chapter 2 the parameters which are typically used in the description of explosive seismic source functions are defined and some of the assumptions underlying the interpretation of measured subsurface ground motion data are critically analyzed. In particular, it is demonstrated that perturbations due to the presence of the free surface can complicate the interpretation of measurements taken above shot depth and lead to significant overestimates of the steady state value of the reduced displacement potential in some cases. The available free-field data from the Gnome and Salmon explosions in salt and the Hard Hat, Shoal and Pile Driver explosions in granite are summarized in Chapter 3 together with he relevant geologic data describing the environment in which the measurements were made.

Book Explosion Source Phenomenology

Download or read book Explosion Source Phenomenology written by Steven R. Taylor and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1991-01-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 65. In March 1989, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) sponsored a symposium on Explosion Source Phenomenology at Lake Tahoe, California. The purpose was to summarize the state of knowledge of the underground explosion source, based on U.S. experience at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Specifically, the goals were to summarize knowledge of the explosion source, to identify limits of that knowledge and existing problems, and to propose directions of future research and data?]collection efforts.

Book UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION EFFECTS

Download or read book UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION EFFECTS written by D. C. Sachs and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project 1.7 of Operation TEAPOT was concerned with the measurement of surface and subsurface effects of an underground explosion of a 1.2-kt nuclear burst (Shot 7). The measurements included free-field earth and airblast effects, as well as loading on underground structural devices. This report deals with the presentation and analysis of the free-field data only; the structural data have been transmitted to the appropriate agencies for their analysis. From the 76 channels installed on TEAPOT Shot 7, 75 usable records were obtained. The free-field quantities measured include air-blast pressure, earth acceleration, earth stress and strain, and permanent earth displacement. The results are discussed by phenomenon and, in each case, the TEAPOT data are compared with pretest predictions. Also, where data are available, comparisons are made with previous underground nuclear test results. Some aspects of seismology and soil mechanics as applied to underground explosion phenomena are presented and, finally, the most pertinent high explosives results from subsequent tests conducted at the TEAPOT location are summarized. Book The Contribution of Two Dimensional Source Effects to the Far Field Seismic Signatures of Underground Nuclear Explosions

Download or read book The Contribution of Two Dimensional Source Effects to the Far Field Seismic Signatures of Underground Nuclear Explosions written by Thomas C. Bache and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional calculations of underground explosions are able to include free surface interaction effects and the depth dependence of overburden pressure and material properties, as well as the complex constitutive models for geologic materials developed in one-dimensional (spherically symmetric) studies. Eleven axisymmetric calculations of explosions in granite are analyzed in this study to determine the two-dimensional effects on the far-field body and surface waves and the magnitude mb and Ms. Seven of these are hypothetical 150 KT explosions at depths from 159 to 1000 meters calculated by Applied Theory, Inc. (ATI). These show depth effects that are different, though not strikingly so, from those calculated with one-dimensional source models. The other four calculations were done by Systems, Science and Software (S-Cubed). The first was for a specific event (PILEDRIVER), and the the depth and yield were varied for the other three. the near- and far-field data for PILEDRIVER were matched rather well, except that the spallation was too large in the calculation.
