Book Air Augmented Hybrid Target Missile

Download or read book Air Augmented Hybrid Target Missile written by Richard A. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of using an air-augmented hybrid rocket for a target missile propulsion system is currently being investigated. The results of the phase I mission study and preliminary system design efforts have shown that an air-augmented hybrid propulsion system is capable of providing a minimum of 5-min range time on station from sea level to 50,000 ft at Mach numbers up to 3.1. Parametric study results have defined an optimum propulsion system capable of supresonic cruise in excess of 25 min at 50,000-ft altitude. The results of various tradeoff studies have shown the effects of air-to-propellant ratio, fuel generator O/F ratio, fuel generator pressure, ramburner base pressure, combustion efficiency, ramburner Mach numbers, and air inlet effects. A baseline design configuration has been selected, and off-design performance characteristics have been determined. The phase II fuel formulation development effort has resulted in the successful characterization of a low-cost, high heating value solid fuel that may be used with MON-25 or IRFNA liquid oxidizers. Fuel formulation selection was based on the results obtained by a series of fuel generator screening tests using fuel formulation candidates selected from a fuel performance summary which was prepared specifically for this application. Activities during phase III will include full-scale gas generator and direct-connect tests and a final preliminary design effort. (Author).

Book A Review of United States Air Force and Department of Defense Aerospace Propulsion Needs

Download or read book A Review of United States Air Force and Department of Defense Aerospace Propulsion Needs written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-01-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocket and air-breathing propulsion systems are the foundation on which planning for future aerospace systems rests. A Review of United States Air Force and Department of Defense Aerospace Propulsion Needs assesses the existing technical base in these areas and examines the future Air Force capabilities the base will be expected to support. This report also defines gaps and recommends where future warfighter capabilities not yet fully defined could be met by current science and technology development plans.

Book Operationally Efficient Propulsion System Study Oepss Data Book Volume 10 Air Augmented Rocket Afterburning

Download or read book Operationally Efficient Propulsion System Study Oepss Data Book Volume 10 Air Augmented Rocket Afterburning written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was directed towards assessing viability and effectiveness of an air augmented ejector/rocket. Successful thrust augmentation could potentially reduce a multi-stage vehicle to a single stage-to-orbit vehicle (SSTO) and, thereby, eliminate the associated ground support facility infrastructure and ground processing required by the eliminated stage. The results of this preliminary study indicate that an air augmented ejector/rocket propulsion system is viable. However, uncertainties resulting from simplified approach and assumptions must be resolved by further investigations. Farhangi, Shahram and Trent, Donnie (Editor) Kennedy Space Center NAS10-11568...

Book Air Augmented Rocket Propellant Screening Facility

Download or read book Air Augmented Rocket Propellant Screening Facility written by Charles H. Hitchcock and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes the results of an Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory engineering development effort to design, fabricate and activate a laboratory-scale, direct-connect test facility. The facility, composed of a clean air supply system, a primary solid rocket combustor and a ramburner, is designed to support air-augmented rocket propellant development efforts. The versatile facility design allows variation in hardware configuration and propellant flow parameters to simulate a broad range of flight conditions, i.e., Mach No. 2 to 3.5 and altitudes from sea level to 50,000 feet. The air delivery system is designed for maximum conditions of 7 lb/sec, 1000F and 250 psia. The annular inlet manifold is adaptable to either a 2-inch-diameter, center-perforated or 6-inch-diameter, end burning primary combustor. A variable-length, 5-inch-diameter ramburner is used. The combustion processes occurring in the primary and secondary chambers are monitored by means of wall pressure and temperature measurements, thrust measurement, residue sampling and optical techniques. Facility performance capabilities, system calibration and preliminary evaluation of baseline direct-connect testing are presented. (Author).

Book The Evolution of Ramjet Missile Propulsion in the U S and where We are Headed

Download or read book The Evolution of Ramjet Missile Propulsion in the U S and where We are Headed written by R. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper summarizes the development of liquid and solid fueled ramjet and ducted rocket technology in the U.S. Applications of this technology to operational weapon systems, primarily the U.S. Navy's Talos and the U.S. Air Force's Bomarc surface to air missile systems, are reviewed. Subsequent development of air launched ramjet missile technology and associated flight test program results are also discussed. These latter programs highlight the U.S. development of the integral booster concept and sudden expansion combustion systems. In parallel with these missile system oriented programs, there was also extensive research carried on relative to the development of high energy boron fuels and supersonic combustion ramjets (Scramjet) for hypersonic applications. Much of the ramjet research and development activity reported herein has been plagued by cyclic swings in government research funds. Today, after extensive development in the late 1980's/early 1990's of the ducted rocket propulsion system for advanced air-to-air missiles, DoD funding is again unstable and could result in the disappearance of the last vestige of a U.S. industrial base related to this technology"--Page 1.
