Book Associational Life in African Cities

Download or read book Associational Life in African Cities written by Arne Tostensen and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2001 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains 17 chapters with material from 13 African countries, from Egypt to Swaziland and from Senegal to Kenya. Most of the authors are young African academics. The focus of the volume is the multitude of voluntary associations that has emerged in African cities in recent years. In many cases, they are a response to mounting poverty, failing infrastructure and services, and more generally, weak or abdicating urban governments. Some associations are new, in other cases, existing organizations are taking on new tasks. Associations may be neighbourhood-based, others may be city-wide and based on professional groupings or a shared ideology or religion. Still others have an ethnic base. Some of these organizations are engaged in both day-to-day matters of urban management and more long-term urban development. Urban associations challenge the monopoly of local and central government institutions.

Book The Crisis of America s Cities

Download or read book The Crisis of America s Cities written by Randall Bartlett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original work on American cities and the ongoing "urban crisis". Using the metaphor of the socially constructed organization of space, Bartlett takes a broad view of the evolution of urban America, from its historical roots to the present; he then examines the way in which current policies have responded to, and affected the organization of space (covering housing, transportation, government and other urban problems). He concludes with a look to the future of American cities, how they will impact and be impacted on by changing commercial and labor markets, by the problems of poverty and cultural change. In an epilogue, he explores possible ways to overcome the "social dilemmas", while recognizing the difficulty of this undertaking. A thoroughly unique perspective to the study of cities, this book is about how space is used in America and how it changes as the "logic of location" evolves historically. Starting with the assumption that cities are fundamentally unnatural" phenomena, it unravels the interactions of technological advances that have made them possible and policies that have given them shape.

Download or read book Housing as Commons written by Stavros Stavrides and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiences of the struggle for housing, ignited by the lack of social and affordable housing, have led to the establishing of shared and self-managed housing areas. In such a context, it becomes crucially important to re-think the need to define common urban worlds “from below". Here, Penny Travlou and Stavros Stavridis trace contemporary practices of urban commoning through which people re-define housing economies. Connecting to a rich literature on the importance of commons and of practices of commoning for the creation of emancipated societies, the authors discuss whether housing struggles and co-habitation experiences may contribute in crucial ways to the development of a commoning culture. The authors explore a variety of urban contexts through global case studies from across the Global North and South, in search of concrete examples that illustrate the potentialities of urban commoning.

Book Urban Crisis Urban Hope

Download or read book Urban Crisis Urban Hope written by Julian Dobson and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Crisis, Urban Hope recognises that our cities are in crisis. It resurrects the concept of the city and its neighbourhoods as a crucible for new ideas and a site of innovative action, recognising the desperate need for support, resources and complementary visions at urban and national scales. The collection of essays brings together leading thinkers and doers from across the spectrum of policy and practice to present both critical analysis and an agenda for action, showing how government and public services not only can be agents of hope, but must be if our cities are to thrive.
