Book A Resource for Evaluating Child Advocacy Centers

Download or read book A Resource for Evaluating Child Advocacy Centers written by United States Department of Justice and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Administrators of Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) must possess a number of skills, including knowing how to conduct an evaluation. This resource book, written expressly for CAC administrators, is designed to give administrators who have varying amounts of evaluation experience the knowledge they will need to conduct either one-time or ongoing evaluations. This manual can also be used by those who contract with an external evaluator; it will be helpful in educating external evaluators about the issues surrounding a CAC evaluation. Evaluation is essential. It is the only way to ensure that a program is benefiting, not harming, the people it is designed to help (Thompson and McClintock 1998). There was a time when reducing the number of interviews to one was the ultimate goal of a CAC. Research has shown, however, that it is sometimes beneficial and necessary to interview children more than once (for example, by using the extended forensic assessment) (Carnes 2001; Carnes, Wilson, and Nelson-Gardell 1999; Myers, Saywitz, and Goodman 1996). The evaluations presented in this book focus on the National Children's Alliance membership standards, excluding organizational structure. (CACs vary in their protocols regarding these standards.) These standards encompass seven core components (among others): - Child-friendly facility. - Multidisciplinary team. - Child investigative interview. - Medical examination. - Mental health services. - Victim advocacy. - Case review.

Book Contested Issues in the Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse

Download or read book Contested Issues in the Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse written by Kathleen Coulborn Faller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a significant contribution to the highly contested debate surrounding how allegations of child sexual abuse should be evaluated. Despite decades of substantial research in this sensitive area, professional consensus remains elusive. A particular source of contention is the sensitivity vs. specificity debate; whether evaluators should aim to reduce the number of true allegations that are labelled false or to reduce the number of false allegations that are labelled true. This edited collection aims to address directly and offer new insights into this debate. It responds directly to Kuehnle and Connell's edited volume, The Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse Allegations: A Comprehensive Guide to Assessment and Testimony (2009), which included chapters which advocated strong specificity positions at the expense of sensitivity. The chapters in this collection feature both challenges to, and replies by, the authors in Kuehnle and Connell's book, making this an essential resource that moves the debate forward. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving more than 6 million children. The United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations – losing on average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect. The WHO reports that over 40 million children, below the age of 15, are subjected to child abuse each year. Domestic violence in the home increases that risk threefold. Child Abuse Investigation Field Guide is intended to be a resource for anyone working with cases involving abuse, neglect or sexual assault of children. It is designed to be a quick reference and focuses on the best practices to use during a child abuse investigation. The guide explains the Minimal Facts Interview, the Forensic Interview, and the entire process from report to court. It is understood that every state has different statutes regarding these topics; however the objectives of recognizing, reporting, and investigating cases of this nature are the same. Just as every crime scene is different, every case involving a child is different. Best practices and standard procedures exist to help ensure cases are discovered, reported and investigated properly, to ensure good documentation is obtained to achieve prosecution and conviction. This field guide will be a useful tool for law enforcement, child protective services, social service caseworkers, child advocates, and other personnel and agencies working for the welfare of children. Includes protocols and best practices for child abuse investigations Explains the Multidisciplinary Team approach and why it is useful Describes the Minimal Facts Interview and the Forensic Interview Walks the reader from the initial report, through the investigation process, to pre-trial preparation and provides tips on court testimony Portable and affordable, the guide is tabbed for easy access of specific information while in the field and can ensure that team members are “on the same page throughout the investigation
