Book Equitable Resource Allocation

Download or read book Equitable Resource Allocation written by Hanan Luss and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique book that specifically addresses equitable resource allocation problems with applications in communication networks, manufacturing, emergency services, and more Resource allocation problems focus on assigning limited resources in an economically beneficial way among competing activities. Solutions to such problems affect people and everyday activities with significant impact on the private and public sectors and on society at large. Using diverse application areas as examples, Equitable Resource Allocation: Models, Algorithms, and Applications provides readers with great insight into a topic that is not widely known in the field. Starting with an overview of the topics covered, the book presents a large variety of resource allocation models with special mathematical structures and provides elegant, efficient algorithms that compute optimal solutions to these models. Authored by one of the leading researchers in the field, Equitable Resource Allocation: Is the only book that provides a comprehensive exposition of equitable resource allocation problems Presents a collection of resource allocation models with applications in communication networks, transportation, content distribution, manufacturing, emergency services, and more Exhibits practical algorithms for solving a variety of resource allocation models Uses real-world applications and examples to explain important concepts Includes end-of-chapter exercises Bringing together much of the equitable resource allocation research from the past thirty years, this book is a valuable reference for anyone interested in solving diverse optimization problems.

Book Models of Resource Allocation

Download or read book Models of Resource Allocation written by Julie Huffman Hertenstein and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The allocation of resources whether to fixed investments such as buildings, land or equipment or to non-fixed investments such as research, new product development, or special advertising campaigns designed to penetrate new geographic markets requires important, complex and sometimes difficult management decisions. These decisions are often critical due to the magnitude of the resources committed, the lengthy time period over which they are committed, the limited supply of the resources, and the strategic implications of decisions. The discounted cash flow (DCF) model considers risk, cash flows and the time value of money; it is presented in finance and accounting texts as the preferred method of selecting projects for the allocation of resources. This paper identifies important problems which limit the use of DCF in practice.

Book Portfolio Decision Analysis

Download or read book Portfolio Decision Analysis written by Ahti Salo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portfolio Decision Analysis: Improved Methods for Resource Allocation provides an extensive, up-to-date coverage of decision analytic methods which help firms and public organizations allocate resources to 'lumpy' investment opportunities while explicitly recognizing relevant financial and non-financial evaluation criteria and the presence of alternative investment opportunities. In particular, it discusses the evolution of these methods, presents new methodological advances and illustrates their use across several application domains. The book offers a many-faceted treatment of portfolio decision analysis (PDA). Among other things, it (i) synthesizes the state-of-play in PDA, (ii) describes novel methodologies, (iii) fosters the deployment of these methodologies, and (iv) contributes to the strengthening of research on PDA. Portfolio problems are widely regarded as the single most important application context of decision analysis, and, with its extensive and unique coverage of these problems, this book is a much-needed addition to the literature. The book also presents innovative treatments of new methodological approaches and their uses in applications. The intended audience consists of practitioners and researchers who wish to gain a good understanding of portfolio decision analysis and insights into how PDA methods can be leveraged in different application contexts. The book can also be employed in courses at the post-graduate level.

Book Project Selection Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Project Selection Under Uncertainty written by Stylianos Kavadias and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Selection Under Uncertainty is the result of a five-year research program on the selection of projects in New Product Development (NPD). Choosing the New Product Development portfolio is of critical importance in today's business environment. The NPD portfolio has considerable strategic effect on the "middle term" success of a business. This book takes a step in developing a theory that addresses the need for quantitative prioritization criteria within the broader strategic context of the R&D portfolios. Its foundation lies in mathematical theory of resource-constrained optimization with the goal to maximize quantitative returns. The book seeks to broaden the portfolio discussion in two ways. First, simplified models - appropriate for the data-poor NPD context - are developed, which attempt to illuminate the structure of the choice problem and robust qualitative rules of thumb, rather than detailed algorithmic decision support. Such robust rules can be applied in the R&D environment of poor data availability. Second, the annual portfolio review is not the only important choice in resource allocation. In addition, the book discusses how ideas might be pre-screened as they emerge, and how projects should be prioritized once they are funded and ongoing.

Book An Application of Resource Allocation Methodology to Army R D Project Management

Download or read book An Application of Resource Allocation Methodology to Army R D Project Management written by Stephen Thomas Baranzyk and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was directed at developing an improved procedure for the allocation of financial resources among competing research and development projects under the constraints of decrement funding, and the requirement for providing minimum support in two functional areas. A new methodology was developed that transformed a prioritized project list of ordinal ranks from the currently used zero-base budgeting procedures to scaled utility values. This methodology used a binary integer computer program which maximizes the investment return of projects selected, and maintains the viability of functional laboraory areas. The report contains the complete computer code that was developed to demonstrate the procedure using FY '81 data related to the R & D Laboratories at the U.S. Army Missile Command. (Author).
