Book excerpt: This document provides: (1) a synthesis of more than 180 research studies cited in the "Research Windows" column that appeared in "The Computing Teacher" journal between 1985 and 1989, and (2) reprints of the columns themselves. In the synthesis section the studies are grouped into five general categories with various subheadings containing bibliographic references for that specific topic followed by a brief discussion. The categories are: (1) curriculum-related instructional support, i.e., the impact of computers in the traditional academic subject areas of language arts, mathematics, and science; (2) computer impact on other learning, with subtopics on database usage, preschool children and computers, Logo, programming (non-Logo), and computer science instruction; (3) software, which includes evaluation and design features such as graphics, types of feedback, and computer-controlled versus student-controlled issues; (4) teacher-focused studies, which include surveys of teachers' attitudes, issues related to teacher training, and factors affecting implementation of computers in the classroom; and (5) other topics, including cost-effectiveness studies, research summaries, and gender and computer use. A brief summary of overall trends concludes this section. Section two reproduces the actual "Research Windows" columns which are referenced in the first section. (DB)

Book The Effects of Keyboarding Instruction on English Language Arts Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of Keyboarding Instruction on English Language Arts Achievement written by George Somers and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of keyboarding instruction on sixth grade English language arts achievement. The data selected for analysis were derived from sixth grade students who were enrolled at two elementary schools located in the Central Valley of California. Data were collected from 30 students at each of the two schools. English language arts scores were collected for the 2017-2018 academic year for students at the sample schools. Students in the Treatment Group received 30 hours of instruction for an entire year in the following keyboarding objectives: home row, touch typing skills, speed building, and accuracy building. Independent t-tests were conducted to determine if there was a difference in English language arts scores on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Corporation (SBAC) test between the group of sixth grade students who received keyboarding instruction and the group of sixth grade students who did not. The results of the analysis showed no significant difference in the ELA scores between the treatment and control groups.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This 10-week action research study investigated the use of a keyboarding program with teacher instruction on the typing speeds and accuracy of fourth-grade students. The purpose of this study was to investigate how improved typing skills affected writing quality. The research questions included: What techniques, strategies, and/or programs can I implement to improve the keyboarding skills of my fourth grade students? What impact does the online keyboarding program, QwertyTown have on fourth grade students' typing speed, measured in words per minute (WPM), accuracy, and confidence? What impact does keyboarding have on writing success? The implemented program consisted of both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, which included observations and interactions, a pre- and post-survey, parent questionnaire, progress reports, a pre- and post-writing assessment, pre- and post-typing test, and student interviews. The findings from this study indicated that typing practice did positively influence typing efficiency and overall writing."--Abstract, p. 1.
