Book The supervision of community orders in England and Wales

Download or read book The supervision of community orders in England and Wales written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Criminal Justice Act 2003 introduced a new style of community sentence known as a community order. For offences committee after 1 April 2005, magistrates and judges have been able to tailor communty sentences to the severity of the offence and, at the same time address offending behaviour. The most common order contains a single requirement obliging the offender to complete specified number of unpaid work hours. The National Probation Service supervises all offenders subject to such orders, plus those released from prison on licence or given other sentences to be served in the community. This report examines how well they have been implemented and whether they are meeting sentencing objectives. It is felt the National Probation Service could improve efficiency by increasing the consistency with which community orders are implemented within local Probation Areas. Better data on capacity, costs and the number of orders completed as sentenced would help the Service demonstrate value for money. The report makes several recommendations to this end.

Book Violent and Sexual Offenders

Download or read book Violent and Sexual Offenders written by Jane L. Ireland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the success of the first edition and the growth of research in the field over the past decade, this book offers an authoritative overview of the assessment, treatment, and management of violent and sexual offenders. This new and expanded edition reflects the considerable developments in research and empirical data and captures the increasing breadth of risk assessment approaches, the wider range of empirically based therapies, and the more creative means of considering management. The second edition captures key developments in this area, with new chapters drawing on a range of pressing contemporary issues, such as female offenders, Internet offenders, terrorists, young people involved in harmful sexual behaviour, and protective factors for aggression. There is also extended coverage of the management of offenders within secure settings and in the community, referring to a wider variety of approaches and the incorporation of technology. This book will be of considerable interest to academics, practitioners, and students engaged with understanding and/or treating violence and aggression, sex crime, forensic psychology, and the assessment, treatment, and management of offenders.

Download or read book Women offenders written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Justice Committee and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government plans to introduce payment-by-results in probation services need to be redesigned in respect of women offenders-who are often classified as presenting a lower risk of reoffending-so that they receive the intensive tailored support they need. The Government's strategic priorities for women offenders lack substance and in particular must take a broader approach to supporting women at risk of reoffending and addressing the inter-generational nature of crime. The Committee welcomes the Government's extension of through the gate statutory support to prisoners sentenced to less than 12 months, likely to benefit many women offenders. However, potential providers of rehabilitative services need to recognise that levels of risk posed by women may not reflect the level of support such women require. Although progress has been made since the Corston recommendations, a number of concerns remain: the women's prison population has not fallen sufficiently fast; over half of women offenders continue to receive ineffective short-custodial sentences; mental health and substance misuse treatment which could reduce use of custody remains unavailable to Courts in sufficient volume. Maintaining a network of women's centres and using residential alternatives to custody are likely to be more effective and cheaper in the long run than short custodial sentences. The Committee does not recommend substantive changes to the overall sentencing framework, but argues instead for more emphasis to be placed on ensuring courts are provided with robust alternatives to custody specifically appropriate to women
