Book The Pamphlet Debate on the Union Between Great Britain and Ireland 1797 1800

Download or read book The Pamphlet Debate on the Union Between Great Britain and Ireland 1797 1800 written by W. J. McCormack and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguments about the Irish Union provided an unprecedented opportunity for the exploitation of the print medium in shaping public opinion. Pamphlets became the principal weapons in a struggle for ideological advantage. Parliamentary speeches, satirical poems, earnest exhortations, even an account of the millenium, streamed from the booksellers. But, as this study shows, the conflict raged well beyond the environs of Dublin's parliament, involving provincial and metropolitan agencies in the three kingdoms. Mc Cormack's annotated finding list brings together details of close on 300 items, and provides call numbers locating copies in the major libraries of the British Isles.

Book Grattan s Failure

Download or read book Grattan s Failure written by Danny Mansergh and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throws new light on the underlying causes of the 1798 rebellion and 1800 Act of Union, by examining the connection between parliamentary and extra-parliamentary agitation between 1779 and 1800. Despite the title the book is not biographical but centres upon aspects of the ideology and political practice of Henry Grattan. This is because it is contended that Grattan was the Irish MP most deeply and frequently involved in manipulating popular movements in this period - contrary to the prevailing historiographical and biographical portraits of him as a strictly constitutional statesman. His vision of the Irish constitution included both broad popular participation and (through it) effective as well as theoretical legislative independence: hence his pivotal position within the study. It is argued that the existing histories have understated the importance of his role, along with that of his parliamentary collaborators, in sowing the ideological seeds of an attempted revolution and in personally encouraging extra-parliamentary agitation. He is popularly credited as the founder of the independent Irish constitution of 1782-1800 - but he also played a part in its destruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Princess Grace Irish Library's 2000 symposium brought together Irish critics and historians to assess the state of culture and society in the 'long nineteenth century' -- 1800-1922 -- during which the Act of Union defined the form of government and representation in Ireland as well as, to a great extent, the forms of opposition. Besides investigating the nature of the Union -- its strengths and weaknesses, its character and progress -- this bicentenary collection considers questions of private conscience and popular consciousness, language and iconography, science and evangelism, Diaspora and disempowerment, terro and consent, memory and amnesia, separation and adherence in the connected spheres of society, politics and culture. It is the thirteenth publication in the Princess Grace Irish Library Literary series.
