Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Repertorium is part of a European initiative called SERMO, which is distinct from the present eponymous book series, and is a series of separate projects making available information about sermons in various medieval vernaculars through the provision of systematic catalogues or repertoria. Containing details of over one thousand Middle English prose sermons in more than one hundred and fifty manuscripts, mainly from the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the current Repertorium incorporates sermons already published alongside those that remain unedited. Each entry contains a concise manuscript description, followed by a detailed analysis of each catalogued sermon under various headings, including authorship, occasion, summary of content, exempla, and biblical citations: the whole work is supported by an extensive set of indices. By representing the texts in a consistent and streamlined manner the Repertorium will serve as a stimulus to future editions, facilitate comparative study and open up new research questions. This work of reference, which provides an overview of the whole corpus of Middle English prose sermons, is not aimed just at sermon specialists but at all scholars interested in medieval historical, literary, and religious culture.

Book English Psalms in the Middle Ages 1300 1450

Download or read book English Psalms in the Middle Ages 1300 1450 written by Annie Sutherland and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-02-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Psalms in the Middle Ages, 1300-1450 explores vernacular translation, adaptation, and paraphrase of the biblical psalms. Focussing on a wide and varied body of texts, it examines translations of the complete psalter as well as renditions of individual psalms and groups of psalms. Exploring who translated the psalms, and how and why they were translated, it also considers who read these texts and how and why they were read. Annie Sutherland foregrounds the centrality of the voice of David in the devotional landscape of the period, suggesting that the psalmist offered the prayerful, penitent Christian a uniquely articulate and emotive model of utterance before God. Examining the evidence of contemporary wills and testaments as well as manuscripts containing the translations, she highlights the popularity of the psalms among lay and religious readers, considering how, when, and by whom the translated psalms were used as well as thinking about who translated them and how and why they were translated. In investigating these and other areas, English Psalms in the Middle Ages, 1300-1450 raises questions about interactions between Latinity and vernacularity in the late Middle Ages and situates the translated psalms in a literary and theoretical context.

Book Four Middle English Sermons

Download or read book Four Middle English Sermons written by Veronica M. O'Mara and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four Middle English sermons from British Library, MS Harley 2268, for the occasions of the Annunciation/Passion Sunday, the Feast of St Mary Magdalene, a Procession, and a Dedication of an Altar to St Anne are edited here for the first time. They form an integrated group, sharing a consistency in content, a similarity of style, and a uniformity of outlook. Although clearly the work of a very scholarly preacher and replete with authorities both biblical and patristic, the tone adopted can also be a populist one, while the preacher makes use of images and allegories more often found in obviously literary works. Prepared at the peak of the Lollard threat and at the height of the turmoil of the Schism, the sermons provide an important example of outspoken and political preaching. Moreover, there is probably a wider range of implicit and explicit contextual information for the Harley 2268 texts than for any other similar set of sermons. This evidence gives strong support to the argument that the sermons were associated with the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary in York, specifically the abbot, Thomas Spofford, and were designed for different venues in York in the early decades of the fifteenth century.
