Interprofessional teamwork and aspects of work with persons with dementia (PwD), caregivers, and care staff, are also covered. Chapters on interventions address specific populations such as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older persons, people with physical and psychological comorbidities, and those experiencing grief and bereavement. Touch in Museums presents a ground-breaking overview of object handling from both historical and scientific perspectives. The book aims to establish a framework for understanding the role of object handling for learning, enjoyment, and health. The broad range of essays included explores the many different contexts for object handling, not only within the museum, but extending beyond it to hospitals, schools and the wider community. Book The Art and Science of Reminiscing

Download or read book The Art and Science of Reminiscing written by Jeffrey D. Webster and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although recognition of reminiscing as a potentially adaptive process can be traced back over 30 years to the seminal work of Robert Butler as discussed in the Foreword, there has been little effort to consolidate the work and paint a complete picture of reminiscing as an entity. Here, reminiscing is presented as a multi-disciplinary topic, examining the theory of, and research on, reminiscing. The book also discusses the different ways of conducting life-review interviews and explores therapeutic applications.; Contributors to this book, many of whom are pioneers and leading figures in the field, discuss and elaborate their latest thinking and research findings from multiple perspectives. The volume's strength derives from its multi-disciplinary nursing, psychiatry, psychology, gerontology, community advocacy and multinational Australia, Canada, England, Sweden and the United States treatment. James Birren, Irene Burnside, and Phillipe Cappeliez are a few of the eminent scholars authoring this volume.

Book Anticipating Future Events

Download or read book Anticipating Future Events written by Grace Flood and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "reminiscence bump" is a frequently reported effect in autobiographical memory in which older adults recall significantly more events from their teens, twenties, and early thirties than from any other period of life. This study examined the degree to which this same "bump effect" is observed in college-age students as they anticipate life events from their current age until their expected age of death. Sixty-five younger adults (17-20 years, M = 18.88, SD = 1.63) drew life-lines depicting the "ups and downs" in the anticipated course of their life in terms of positive and negative events. Participants indicated the location of each anticipated event and provided their age at the time of the event. The distance above or below the line provide a measure of the degree to which each event was perceived as positive or negative. A total of 651 life events were recorded. In addition, the current study investigated other variables thought to be related to the way individuals anticipate future life events. The differences and relationships seen in anticipated future life events with regards to their past, generative concern, personality, locus of control, and balanced time perspective were investigated. Consistent with the presence of a reminiscence bump in older adults as they recall events in their past, younger adults in this study displayed a strong "anticipation bump" in which events from the late teens, twenties, and early thirties were identified as encompassing a larger percentage of future life events than from middle age or later life. Fifty-seven percent of all anticipated events fell in this young adult period, compared with 16.9% falling in the 40s and 50s and 26.1% of events falling above the age of 60.

Book Effects of Interpersonal Relationships on Shared Reminiscence

Download or read book Effects of Interpersonal Relationships on Shared Reminiscence written by Candice E. Condon and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You rely on your memories for who you are as a person, where you have been, and what you have experienced in your life to date. But, what if it turned out that these memories that you hold closely aren’t your memories at all? What if they were someone else’s memories? This book documents the results of a research project investigating the effects of interpersonal relationship factors on shared reminiscence. Although memory and the factors that influence it have been researched more in recent years, there has been limited research which has measured the specific interpersonal effects of familiarity, trust, confidence, and memory esteem on memory distortion. There are four empirical chapters in this book. Within these four chapters are four separate, but related, studies, which examine the effects of interpersonal factors on memory distortion for ordinary events and for flashbulb memory of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.

Download or read book Things that Matter written by William L. Randall and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us have particular things in our lives – photographs, paintings, old letters, books, furniture, jewellery, or clothing – that hold special meaning for us. Often, they correspond to pivotal memories and can be central to our sense of self and our life narratives, all the more so as we age. Things That Matter sheds important light on the intricate intertwining of mementos with stories – and vice versa – in most people’s lives. The book explores the significance of cherished objects within the life stories of nine participants in a qualitative study of the links between reminiscence and resilience in later life. The researchers who conducted the study represent a variety of fields, including gerontology, social work, ministry, nursing, literature, and education. The book details how life stories can be fraught with a wide range of insights and questions from the memories that get stirred up as people embark on the process of "life review" prompted by the challenges and changes of aging. Shedding light on the complex emotional, psychological, and spiritual findings of the study, Things That Matter ultimately reveals the intricacy of personal narrative and the incredible ways in which things and stories are interwoven in our lives over time.
