Book Beyond Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges

Download or read book Beyond Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges written by Sarah Blick and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2007-07-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Spencer, former Keeper of the Museum of London, was a major scholar of medieval popular culture. He almost single-handedly established the study of pilgrim souvenirs and secular badges. He defined what these objects were and ascertained their function, manufacture, style, and iconography with a careful use of primary documents and intricate stylistic analysis. He identified every major souvenir and badge discovered in Great Britain during the last few decades. He also made prominent contributions to the field of seal matrices, gaming pieces, and horse paraphernalia. What bound all of these interests together was his understanding that the study of these artefacts could shed light on the beliefs and practices of a large number of people. This is reflected in the frequency with which his work is cited. This volume is a collection of essays written by those who worked with Brian directly and those with whom he corresponded.

Book excerpt: Daughter of a mayor of King's Lynn, wife of a burgess there and mother of fourteen children, Margery Kempe (c. 1373-post 1438) was also a religious mystic and hysteric, who dictated her 'autobiography' to a scribe at the end of her life. In this history of her life, Anthony Goodman examines "The Book", to reconstruct as much of her conventional biography as the materials allow. Including her spiritual experiences, but focusing most particularly on her day-to-day life, he builds an intriguing picture of bourgeois society in late medieval Lynn, and the wider world of late medieval towns in England and Europe more generally.

Book Our Magnificent Fabrick

Download or read book Our Magnificent Fabrick written by Sarah Brown and published by Historic England. This book was released on 2003 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a period of almost five hundred years York Minster resembled a building site as different parts were added and altered before it finally became the building we see today. This detailed study of the construction and development of the minster draws on architectural recording carried out on the building by the RCHME and English Heritage since the early 1970s, as well as more recent discoveries and research, particularly on the stained glass windows. Each major building phase is discussed in turn: the construction of the transept, the Chapter House, the nave, Lady Chapel, western choir and central tower. The historical background to these phases reveals some of the financial, political and religious events that hampered and/or motivated the building phases and this, and issues of imagery and patronage, are all discussed.

Book Medieval York

    Book Details:
  • Author : D. M. Palliser
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2014-01-23
  • ISBN : 0191667579

Download or read book Medieval York written by D. M. Palliser and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval York provides a comprehensive history of what is now considered England's most famous surviving medieval city, covering nearly a thousand years. The volume examines York from its post-Roman revival as a town (c. 600) to the major changes of the 1530s and 1540s, which in many ways brought an end to the Middle Ages in England. York was one of the leading English towns after London, and in status almost always the 'second city'. Much research and publication has been carried out on various aspects of medieval York, but this volume seeks to cover the field in its entirety. David Palliser offers an up-to-date and broad-based account of the city by employing the evidence of written documents, archaeology (especially on the rich results of recent city centre excavations), urban morphology, numismatics, art, architecture, and literature. Special attention is paid to the city's religious drama and its wealth of surviving stained glass. The story of Medieval York is set in a wide context to make comparisons with other English and Continental towns, to establish how far York's story was distinctive or was typical of other English towns which have been less fortunate in the survival of their medieval fabric. It is essential reading for anyone interested in York's past and in its rich heritage of medieval churches, guildhalls, houses, streets, and city walls - the most complete medieval circuit in England.

Book The Quest for an Appropriate Past in Literature Art and Architecture

Download or read book The Quest for an Appropriate Past in Literature Art and Architecture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the various strategies by which appropriate pasts were construed in scholarship, literature, art, and architecture in order to create “national”, regional, or local identities in late medieval and early modern Europe. Because authority was based on lineage, political and territorial claims were underpinned by historical arguments, either true or otherwise. Literature, scholarship, art, and architecture were pivotal media that were used to give evidence of the impressive old lineage of states, regions, or families. These claims were related not only to classical antiquity but also to other periods that were regarded as antiquities, such as the Middle Ages, especially the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of “antiquity” and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in the period of 1400–1700. Contributors include: Barbara Arciszewska, Bianca De Divitiis, Karl Enenkel, Hubertus Günther, Thomas Haye, Harald Hendrix, Stephan Hoppe, Marc Laureys, Frédérique Lemerle, Coen Maas, Anne-Françoise Morel, Kristoffer Neville, Konrad Ottenheym, Yves Pauwels, Christian Peters, Christoph Pieper, David Rijser, Bernd Roling, Nuno Senos, Paul Smith, Pieter Vlaardingerbroek, and Matthew Walker.
