Download or read book Forest Landscape Restoration written by John Stanturf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoration ecology, as a scientific discipline, developed from practitioners’ efforts to restore degraded land, with interest also coming from applied ecologists attracted by the potential for restoration projects to apply and/or test developing theories on ecosystem development. Since then, forest landscape restoration (FLR) has emerged as a practical approach to forest restoration particularly in developing countries, where an approach which is both large-scale and focuses on meeting human needs is required. Yet despite increased investigation into both the biological and social aspects of FLR, there has so far been little success in systematically integrating these two complementary strands. Bringing experts in landscape studies, natural resource management and forest restoration, together with those experienced in conflict management, environmental economics and urban studies, this book bridges that gap to define the nature and potential of FLR as a truly multidisciplinary approach to a global environmental problem. The book will provide a valuable reference to graduate students and researchers interested in ecological restoration, forest ecology and management, as well as to professionals in environmental restoration, natural resource management, conservation, and environmental policy.

Book Regional Peer Review Process on a Risk based Assessment Framework to Identify Priorities for Ecosystem based Oceans Management in the Pacific Region

Download or read book Regional Peer Review Process on a Risk based Assessment Framework to Identify Priorities for Ecosystem based Oceans Management in the Pacific Region written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings summarize the relevant discussions and key conclusions that resulted from a Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS)Regional Peer Review meeting on May 8-10, 2012, at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, British Columbia. One working paper was presented for peer review. This paper developed an ecological risk assessment framework to identify and assess the relative risk of harm to VECsfrom human activities and their associated stressors and to rank the significance of activities and stressors based on the relative risks to VECs. In-person and web-based participation included DFO Science, Fisheries and Aquatic Management Sectors staff; and external participants from First Nations organizations, the Province of British Columbia, Environment Canada, the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the commercial fishing sector, environmental non-governmental organizations, consultants, and academia. The conclusions and advice resulting from this review will be provided in the form of a ScienceAdvisory Report to Oceans and Ecosystem Management to inform the development of conservation objectives for the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area (PNCIMA) and Pacific Region Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Book Beyond Farmer First

Download or read book Beyond Farmer First written by Ian Scoones and published by Practical Action. This book was released on 1994 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to reveal how agricultural research and extension, far from being discrete, rational acts, are in fact part of a process of coming to terms with conflicting interests and viewpoints. By going beyond Farmer First, this theoretically informed perspective describes agricultural development as what it is: a highly ideological and political process. As Robert Chambers notes in his foreword, the concerns of Farmer First with performance and of Beyond Farmer First with process, indicate that a radical rethinking of knowledge, power and agricultural science is well under way.
