Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Refutation of Hereditary Total Depravity: Or the Chief Corner Stone of Calvinistic and Arminian Sectarianism Removed When I wrote the first edition, I took it for granted that the leaders of the sects really be lieved the creed-doctrine of hereditary total depravity. This, I have been since convinced, is not generally the fact. They are now taking a world of pains to modify the doctrine, and to adapt it to the light and spirit of the present, age. To do this requires, of course, all sorts of twisting and turning. Some of them endeavor to illustrate their ideas of depravity by a stove moderately warm, not red hot, but warm, or hot in all its parts, and therefore totally warm or hot. Others, by a glass -of water, in which one single drop of blood has been dropped - not as polluted as it might be made by the putting in of more blood, but unclean, in a small degree, throughout, and therefore totally polluted. Or, by the process of coloring eloth, tinged through out, and therefore totally dyed. Who does not see that these illustrations are clearly the giving up of the doctrine of the creeds? According to these, depravity is not a tinge, but perfect' black ness in every faculty of the soul and in every member of the body. If the depravity indica ted by the above illustrations be the whole for which the evangelical sects now contend, I have no very serious objections; for in this view of the subject the sinner is not by nature as dead as a stone - the Word of God may, without any abstract or extra in uences of the Spirit, excite faith in the minds of the unregeneratel - the unregenerate have, still unscathed by original sin, powers both intellectual and moral, by which, through the in uences of the truth as it is in Jesus, they may obey the gospel and become Christians, and run so as to obtain the incorrup tible crown. Hereditary total depravity, by their own show ing, is the foundation of the self-styled evan gelical sects. The doctrine of total depravity, says Mr. Hendricks, in his letters to the 'self styled Reformers, ' is emphatically fundamen tal. And he adds, the whole plan of salva tion is grafted in upon the stock of total de pravity. The Rev. D. Holmes, A. M., says that genuine Christianity stands or falls with it. And in the Presbyterian' Preacher, Vol. 4, N0. We have the following: By nature all men are totally depraved. Human depravity is at the foundation of the whole system of Christianity. These quotations may explain to the reader a part of my title page, The chief corner stone of Calvinistic and Arminian secta rianism removed. The sects who suppose the whole plan of salvation to be grafted in upon the stock of total depravity, suppose this to be also true, I presume, in regard to their plans of salvation! If I cut down this tree, or in any way eradicate it, its grafts, no matter how numer ous, must fall with it; or if the temple of ortho doxy has for its foundation hereditary total de pravity, and it shall be proved to be false, the temple sustained by it must necessarily fall; for says Mr. Holmes, genuine Christianity stands or falls with it. Unless I am egregiously mis taken, I have felled this tree -i have removed effectually and forever this ponderous corner stone! Holland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of the Principal Arguments Claimed in Support of the Doctrines of Total Hereditary Depravity, the Trinity, and Atonement The reader must not suppose that the writer of the fol lowing pages intends to deny either human depravity, or the Operations of the Spirit; he believes in both, and merely denies that depravity is total, and that the Spirit operates abstractly and physically in order to faith. Now if he prove that depravity is not hereditary and total, it will follow that men may believe savingly through the eflicacy of testimony; and so soon as this shall have been proven, the whole superstructure, whether of Cal vinism, Arminianism, or F ullerism, must fall to the ground, its foundation having been removed. The writer intends to consider the reader of this book a rational and intelligent being, who thinks and reasons for himself. He has learned by painful experience, that with the bigot and the creature of prejudice, argument is useless. Such persons have no mind of their own; they are the mere automatons of those who think for them. I am thankful, however, that in this enlightened age there are thousands who read, think, judge, and consider for themselves. To those persons then he will consider himself as speaking in this volume. If he shall contribute a grain in the scale for the cause of Christ, to the melioration of the condition of his suffering species, he will be amply com pensated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Original Sin: As Received and Taught by the Churches of the Reformation Stated and Defended, and the Error of Dr. Hodge in Claiming That This Doctrine Recognizes the Gratuitous Imputation of Sin, Pointed Out and Refuted In his presentation Of the subject moreover, Dr. Hodge has' made no direct allusion to the Theology Of Dr. Breckinridge, nor to the discussion in the Danville Review, nor yet to the very able discussion by Dr. Schaff, in his exegesis of Romans v. 12 - 21, in the American edition of Lange on Romans. And our explanation for citing and referring to him so directly as we have done, is, that/there does not exist in the whole body Of the recognized Augustinian theology, from the time Of Calvin until now, the theory and exegesis which are here investigated, except as they may be referred to or cited in order to be refuted and condemned It would be impossible therefore to do the subject justice without such references to and citations of his writings. There are oc casionally in the Revised Edition of his Commentary on Romans, as well as in his recently published Theology, what appear to be covert allusions to the positions taken in the Danville Review. But it has been supposed that Dr. Hodge did not design to invite special attention to that discussion; for he certainly has, so far as any such references are concerned, avoided any Open pretext for a rejoinder. While, on the contrary, we being desirous to secure at tention to all that he has written on the subject, have fully and freely referred to and cited his writings whenever the discussion has rendered it necessary. We must express our regret, however, that his denunciatory language and attempts at ridicule, not less than his accusations of error, so Often and so imperiously repeated in his writings, against What we are assured is the truth Of God, have left us no alternative but to repel them in a manner equally decided; for we Should regard any succumbing to such assump tions, and to accusations so utterly unfounded and yet so serious, as little short of treachery to the cause of Christ. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of total depravity is a very humbling one. It is not that man leans to one side and needs propping up, nor that he is merely ignorant and requires instructing, nor that he is run down and calls for a tonic; but rather that he is undone, lost, spiritually dead. Consequently, he is "without strength," thoroughly incapable of bettering himself; he is exposed to the wrath of God, and unable to perform a single work which can find acceptance with Him. Almost every page of the Bible bears witness to this truth. The whole scheme of redemption takes it for granted. The plan of salvation taught in the Scriptures could have no place on any other supposition. The impossibility of any man's gaining the approbation of God by works of his own appears plainly in the case of the rich young ruler who came to Christ. Judged by human standards, he was a model of virtue and religious attainments. Yet, like all others who trust in self-efforts, he was ignorant of the spirituality and strictness of God's law; when Christ put him to the test his fair expectations were blown to the winds and "he went away sorrowful" (Matt. 19:22). It is therefore a most unpalatable doctrine. It cannot be otherwise, for the unregenerate love to hear of the greatness, the dignity, the nobility of man. The natural man thinks highly of himself and appreciates only that which is flattering. Nothing pleases him more than to listen to that which extols human nature and lauds the state of mankind, even though it be in terms which not only repudiate the teaching of God's Word but are flatly contradicted by common observation and universal experience. And there are many who pander to him by their lavish praises of the excellency of civilization and the steady progress of the race. Hence, to have the lie given to the popular theory of evolution is highly displeasing to its deluded votaries. Nevertheless, the duty of God's servants is to stain the pride of all that man glories in, to strip him of his stolen plumes, to lay him low in the dust before God. However repugnant such teaching is, God's emissary must faithfully discharge his duty "whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear" (Ezek. 3:11).
