Book excerpt: This omnibus brings together some old and some recent works by Jos Gommans on the warhorse and its impact on medieval and early modern state-formation in South Asia. These studies are based on Gommans’ observation that Indian empires always had to deal with a highly dynamic inner frontier between semi-arid wilderness and settled agriculture. Such inner frontiers could only be bridged by the ongoing movements of Turkish, Afghan, Rajput and other warbands. Like the most spectacular examples of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empires, they all based their power on the exploitation of the most lethal weapon of that time: the warhorse. In discussing the breeding and trading of horses and their role in medieval and early modern South Asian warfare, Gommans also makes some thought-provoking comparisons with Europe and the Middle East. Since the Indian frontier is part of the much larger Eurasian Arid Zone that links the Indian subcontinent to West, Central and East Asia, the final essay explores the connected and entangled history of the Turko-Mongolian warband in the Ottoman and Timurid Empires, Russia and China.

Understanding that their only chance at safety and peace lay in the hands of the divine prince of Ayodhya, Shri Rama, the sages kindly petitioned that most humble, gentle, chivalrous, and capable of warriors to help save them from the attacks of the vile Rakshasas, the ogres given to black magic and illusion. Rama, wholly willing to provide for the protection of those dependent upon the administrative class of men, was ready to come to the aid of the ascetics, but before He could proceed any further, His beautiful, kind, and caring wife, Sita Devi, had a few concerns of her own. Knowing full well the nature of the attacking ogres and the innocence and exalted status of the sages in the Dandaka forest, Sita was still concerned that her husband, who had taken a vow to always abide by dharma, might take to unnecessary violence borne of anger and rage directed at the enemy. Not wanting her dear husband to even show a hint of unrighteousness, Sita kindly put her concerns before Rama. Rama’s response to Sita’s kind inquiry is found in the famous Ramayana, an epic poem and classic text of the Vedic tradition. Rama, who is celebrated as a divine figure throughout the world, responded to Sita by firmly establishing His dedication to the welfare and protection of the saintly class of men. Lord Rama: The Shelter for the Saints consists of fifteen essays covering the different verses from the Ramayana that constituted Rama’s response to Sita. These descriptions cover a wide range of subjects, including spirituality, the divisions of work and spiritual institutions prescribed for man, the essence of human life, the temporary nature of life and death, the eternal wisdom of the Vedic teachings found in sacred texts like the Shrimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita, and much more.

Book excerpt: The Northeast Indian borderlands, a cultural crossroads between South, Southeast and East Asia, constitute an important post-colonial exception to the narratives of nation, troubling the common perception of India as an ostensibly liberal regime. This book is the first to consider the representations of the effects of political terror and survival in contemporary literature from Northeast India. Fictions from this polyglot region offer alternative representations that show the post-colonial nation-state to engage in acts of aggression that parallel colonial regimes. The militarization of everyday life and the subsequent growth of cultures of impunity has left a lasting impact on ordinary existence in this border zone. Like in the much more widely discussed case of Kashmir, the governance of the Northeast region is not characterized so much by the management of life, the domain of what Michel Foucault calls biopolitics, but rather around the preponderance and distribution of death, what the postcolonial critic Achille Mbembe calls necropolitics. Not surprisingly, along with Mbembe’s theorizations, the influential works of the Italian philosopher, Giorgio Agamben, on 'bare life' have provided fruitful pathways to a study of the sovereign politics of death and political terror in this region. The author draws upon the conceptual literature on political terror and sovereign power through a reading of Anglophone fictions alongside Assamese fictional narratives (all published after 1990), but shifts the onus from the 'why' of violence to the 'how' of lived experience. An original study of contemporary survivalist fictions that explores survival under conditions of civil and military threat, this book is a valuable contribution to the field of contemporary global literature focusing on cartographies of death and sovereign terror and postcolonial literature.

Book excerpt: The City and the Country in Early India: A Study of Malwa is about the emergence of urban centres in the sixth century bce, and analyses the processes and spatiality of urbanization, taking Malwa as its case study. Earlier research on urbanism has focussed on either literary or archaeological sources. While literary sources tend to locate the agency for change exclusively in preachers and rulers, in archaeology, the forces of change become nameless and faceless. The study of inscriptions from Malwa helps in restoring agency to common people. The beginnings of urbanism are to be found in the pre-literate past, and, therefore, require an analysis of archaeological data. Using insights from anthropology and studies of early states, in the first half of the book an attempt has been made to look for new ways to account for urbanization. The second half of the book tries to understand the process of urbanization by examining epigraphic and literary sources. The process of the emergence of urban centres created new forms of division of space: urban centres were surrounded by villages which in turn were surrounded by wilderness. This book tries to recover the histories of their complex interrelations. Since caste and kinship are considered central to the world of Indian sociology, an attempt has also been made to understand the relationships between caste, kinship and urbanism. Changes in the attitude of the literati towards the city and the country have also been examined.
