Book Great Oasis Settlement Pattern in Central Iowa

Download or read book Great Oasis Settlement Pattern in Central Iowa written by Don Aden Wirth and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Native American group known as the Great Oasis Culture lived in the upper Midwest portion of the United States from approximately 1100 to 950 years before present. There is evidence through the archaeological record that the Great Oasis people once lived in central Iowa along the Des Moines River in Boone and Webster Counties and the Raccoon Rivers of Dallas and Polk Counties. The sites at which they lived are on the landscape in a predictable manner. The goal of this thesis is to find those environmental factors that most closely correlate with the Great Oasis settlement pattern in central Iowa. Two known clusters (localities) of Great Oasis sites are in Central Iowa in Boone and Dallas Counties. These localities are the basis for this research. The research procedures involved archaeological excavation techniques, artifact analysis, and environmental modeling through existing environmental studies, and archaeological and ethnographic parallels. The specific parameters studied were soil and landform types, modeled vegetation and faunal communities, and the spatial units between Great Oasis sites and landforms. In the central Iowa study area, this research has shown the most common placement for Great Oasis sites is on intermediate to high river terraces of navigable streams near preferred types. This thesis proposes the Great Oasis people relied heavily on white-tailed deer for food and utility. The carrying capacity for white-tailed deer in a given locality is the most important of the parameters studied in determining the temporal and spatial aspects of Great Oasis site location. Briefly, within a given locality, white-tailed deer were not in sufficient quantities for all mapped sites of a given locality to be inhabited at the same time based on ethnographic and archaeological analogies.

Book Early Settlement and Growth of Western Iowa Or Reminiscences Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Settlement and Growth of Western Iowa Or Reminiscences Classic Reprint written by John Todd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Settlement and Growth of Western Iowa or Reminiscences Consequently the material herewith presented appeared in T he Tabor Beacon, the weekly paper of his home town, in 1891. This naturally led to verification, corrections and additions, which added much to the value of the work. The re vision was carefully made by my father and the following is the result. He corresponded with some publishing houses to learn the cost of publi cation, but hesitated, partly from characteristic modesty, I believe, to undertake the work. After his death in 1894, his children thought to publish the work with a sketch of his life, but hitherto a favorable opportunity has not presented itself.
