Book A Real Innovation Agenda for Canada

Download or read book A Real Innovation Agenda for Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The higher the level of productivity, the more wealth generated per hour of work, and the more competitive the country. [...] Also there is a world of difference between funding for basic research coming from the Tri-Council (and similar) agencies (i.e., The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)), which are arm's length from government, and ministerial interventionism [...] Data should be published by the federal government; as the Council of Canadian Academies has noted: Data limitations continue to constrain the assessment of R&D activity and excellence in Canada, particu- larly in industrial R&D and in the social sciences, arts, and humanities. [...] However, the purpose of this paper is not so much to argue for the choice for innovation over income distribution, as to argue for consistency of approach; to drop the innovation sham it engages in now, and engage in consistent policy-making one way or the other. [...] Richard is past chair of the board of directors of the University of Toronto Innovations Foundation, and member of the advisory committee to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Cana- da.

Book A Canadian Healthcare Innovation Agenda

Download or read book A Canadian Healthcare Innovation Agenda written by A. Scott Carson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the result of a 2016 national leaders conference sponsored by Queen’s University to explore the prospects for a pan-Canadian healthcare innovation strategy. The conference themes were inspired by the 2015 report of the federally commissioned Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation, led by David Naylor, which examined how the federal government could support innovation. A Canadian Healthcare Innovation Agenda features original commissioned chapters from academics and healthcare leaders addressing a range of issues such as the meaning of healthcare innovation, how a national healthcare agency and investment fund could be governed, the need for big data and evidence, adding value through Canadian supply-chain management, overcoming regulatory barriers to innovation, policy innovations for indigenous, military and elderly populations, the role of medical professions in promoting innovation, education, and the development of medical innovators. The Canadian healthcare system is so fragmented that any thought of a system-wide strategy for healthcare innovation is considered a far-distant ideal at best. This book presents a contrary view, outlining an agenda for Canadian healthcare innovation. It shows that Canada does indeed have the building blocks for innovation, and concludes that the time to act is now.

Book Canadian Science Technology and Innovation Policy

Download or read book Canadian Science Technology and Innovation Policy written by G. Bruce Doern and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy presents new critical analysis about related developments in the field such as significantly changed concepts of peer review, merit review, the emergence of big data in the digital age, and the rise of an economy and society dominated by the internet and information. The authors scrutinize the different ways in which federal and provincial policies have impacted both levels of government, including how such policies impact on Canada’s natural resources. They also study key government departments and agencies involved with science, technology, and innovation to show how these organizations function increasingly in networks and partnerships, as Canada seeks to keep up and lead in a highly competitive global system. The book also looks at numerous realms of technology across Canada in universities, business, and government and various efforts to analyze biotechnology, genomics, and the Internet, as well as earlier technologies such as nuclear reactors, and satellite technology. The authors assess whether a science-and-technology-centred innovation economy and society has been established in Canada – one that achieves a balance between commercial and social objectives, including the delivery of public goods and supporting values related to redistribution, fairness, and community and citizen empowerment. Probing the nature of science advice across prime ministerial eras, including recent concerns over the Harper government’s claimed muzzling of scientists in an age of attack politics, Canadian Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy provides essential information for academics and practitioners in business and government in this crucial and complex field.

Book Developing an Inclusive Innovation Agenda for Canada

Download or read book Developing an Inclusive Innovation Agenda for Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In parallel with the OECD's notion of an inclusive growth process, we adopt the following definition of an inclusive innovation system: An inclusive innovation system is an innovation system in which opportunities to participate in innovation are broadly available to all and the dividends of innovation are broadly shared by all. [...] The emphasis on distribution is applied to both the inputs and the outputs of the innovation process. [...] The discrepancy between the OECD measure and the IEWB in terms of Canada's ranking is attributable to the measures' different treatment of equality and economic security. [...] In the first part of this section, we define inclusive growth and inclusive innovation and situate our definitions in the context of the existing research. [...] The OECD (2014a) definition of inclusive growth captures the spirit of all the definitions in Exhibit 1 and is flexible enough to encompass the points emphasized in the other definitions.
