Book Theology in Search of Foundations

Download or read book Theology in Search of Foundations written by Randal Rauser and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of Western thought, Christian theology was once considered to be 'the Queen of Sciences'. Today it has been marginalised by a prevailing scepticism. Randal Rauser confronts the problem of developing a public voice for the theologian as engaged in true theological science while not compromising the commitment to the Christian community of faith. This book posits a viable account of theological rationality, justification, and knowledge that avoids the twin pitfalls of modern rationalism and postmodern irrationalism. Theology is freshly understood as a rigorous and rational truth-seeking discipline that seeks theoretical understanding of divine reality. Throughout the modern era the predominant epistemological position has been classical foundationalism, a position now widely rejected by philosophers and theologians alike. Philosophers recognize that it fails to achieve a plausible account of rationality, justification or knowledge, while theologians recognize the extent to which classical foundationalist strictures have distorted Christian doctrine. In its place many philosophers and theologians alike have adopted a nonfoundationalist epistemology, which is in turn often associated with a problematic alethic and metaphysical antirealism. Engaging with the ideas of key thinkers from Descartes, Locke, and Kant, to Bruce Marshall and Alvin Plantinga, Rauser provides an accessible and provocative survey of the theological terrain of the modern - and postmodern - era, arguing in favour of a return to a moderate foundationalism.

Book God Rational Theology

Download or read book God Rational Theology written by Guro Bert Domingo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rational Theology In Search of World Peace Humanity is One The greatest single source of human conflict has to do with beliefs or of faith that one holds. The variety of human ideas, most often irreconcilable with one another, has lead to divisions and endless schisms. There is a great need to accommodate and harmonize ideas by convergence at the point where agreement is possible. Rationalization, convergence, and unification at the center is necessary to achieve world peace. However, this is only possible when rational people can discuss openly without fear of each other. The steps to accomplish this enormous task can only start with the individual. This is the goal of this work. A person needs to have sufficient knowledge to understand the various facets of life. This would include a philosophical base of values with a worldview encompassing and transcending all biases and prejudices inherent in, and inculcated by the culture. No religious, scientific, or traditional views must be sacrosanct to analysis. With adequate knowledge, one gains freedom from ignorance and fear. This book, Rational Theology, is a guidebook for any individual desiring to discover real freedom. It is a companion of the authors book Freedom Trilogy. Freedom Trilogy is a self-help and how-to-book. It helps develop thinking and reasoning abilities. It challenges the mind to gain new perspectives. It contains the ISA Introspective Self-analysis method of discovering ourselves and gaining freedom from fear and anxieties. Through Knowledge, Ignorance and Fear are banished, Freedom Attained once we discover and understand ourselves.

Book excerpt: "A rational theology, as understood in this volume, is a theology which (1) is based on fundamental principles that harmonize with the knowledge and reason of man, (2) derives all of its laws, ordinances and authority from the accepted fundamental principles, and (3) finds expression and use in the everyday life of man. In short, a rational theology is derived from the invariable laws of the universe, and exists for the good of man. "This volume is an exposition; it is not an argument. The principles of the Gospel, as held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are stated, briefly, simply and without comment, to show the coherence, reasonableness and universality of the gospel philosophy. The authority for many of the statements found in the volume is given in the references included in the appendix. The doctrines herein stated are, however, the common knowledge of the members of the Church. No attempt has been made to correlate the doctrines discussed with current philosophical opinions. Those who are led to study this rational theology in the light of the best knowledge and soundest thought, will enter a fertile field, and will find a surprising harmony between the Gospel and all discovered truth. "Every writer who in this day attempts an exposition of the Gospel must draw heavily upon the clear thoughts of those who, from Joseph Smith to the living workers, have written and spoken in behalf of the truth. I acknowledge, gratefully, my obligation to the makers of "Mormon" literature. Many friends have, also, in various ways, given kindly aid; to them I offer hearty and sincere thanks." .-JOHN A. Book Jesus and the Metaphysics of God

Download or read book Jesus and the Metaphysics of God written by Vince Procopio and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book During my formative years, I realized that questions pertaining to God and Jesus were not merely abstract philosophical questions. These beliefs constitute the core of one's worldview. As such, their pervasive influence as to how we lead our lives is relevant and consequential. All my life I’ve been haunted by this burning question: Is physical reality all there is? This book is an attempt to engage in a rational inquiry into the very heart of spirituality. To be sure, questions about Jesus and God are metaphysical in nature. And as such, science cannot enter this domain. Rather, as the great philosopher Immanuel Kant admonished, any individual pursuit must push to the epistemological limits of science. Any remaining gap is to be filled with faith. This is my journey! I welcome you, fellow traveler. About the Author Vince Procopio was born in a small village in Italy and came to the United States at the age of seven. By the age of thirteen, Vince began his life-long passion of weight lifting, which he continues to the present day. He dropped out of high school to volunteer in the United States Marine Corps in 1968. After serving a one-year tour in Vietnam and under the auspices of the GI Bill, Vince became a full-time student through the summers from 1970-1983. His greatest passion has been learning and trying to understand the miracle of life.

Book Unboundedly Rational Religion

Download or read book Unboundedly Rational Religion written by Stephen Theron and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-08-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2007 in the subject Philosophy - Miscellaneous, grade: "-", , language: English, abstract: An introductory chapter loads the scales in favour of an idealist approach in quasi-Quinean sense, in that being is called in question, as it is throughout the book. After a chapter revising the best expositions of faith as a possibly rational attitude the Christian discovery or intuition of intra-divine events or processes, held compatible with divine infinity and immutability, is treated under the rubric of a Trinitarian philosophy. This leads to analysis of notions of being (identity in difference) and, above all, of creation, viewing this as freed from the historic dualism which has contradicted the necessary infinity of the first principle. Creation is not thereby denied but seen as truly a constituent of the divine life. The picture is thus monistic, which is to say scientific as presenting a holistic system or way of seeing things absolutely or beyond appearance merely. The consequences for human metaphysical and moral nature are rigorously drawn, freed from all anthropomorphisms so as better to illuminate the insights of religion and philosophy. The relevance for contemporary movements from palaeontology to Church ecumenism is brought out, while a concluding epilogue attempts to shed light on the vexed debate on Europe in relation to the Christian inheritance. Other concluding chapters treat of both sacramental religion and of dialectic as the method of reason, whether in theology or in the world. For the world without the reason is not an object of thought, any more than you can wash the fur without wetting it, in G. Frege’s words. [...]

The book could not be made larger, were it to serve well the special purpose for which it was written. Therefore, the treatment is brief and many important and interesting subjects are omitted. Moreover, the book had to be completed within a short, set time, and many of the imperfections of the work are the results of the hurried preparation. Every writer who in this day attempts an exposition of the Gospel must draw heavily upon the clear thoughts of those who, from Joseph Smith to the living workers, have written and spoken in behalf of the truth. I acknowledge, gratefully, my obligation to the makers of "Mormon" literature. Many friends have, also, in various ways, given kindly aid; to them I offer hearty and sincere thanks. JOHN A. WIDTSOE.

Book Truth

  • Author : Christine Helmer
  • Publisher : Peeters Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9789042913158
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Truth written by Christine Helmer and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume relates the controversy concerning competing knowledge claims to truth. In a pluralist context, substantive claims can no longer be made by skirting epistemological issues. Rather, claims concerning content can only be adequately addressed once epistemological issues have been clarified. Truth must furthermore be related to the hermeneutical task of understanding another's position. Finally, truth must be related to the rules governing the path by which competing claims arrive at consensus. This volume contains interdisciplinary dialogues between philosophers of religion, theologians, historians, and biblical scholars. The interdisciplinary dialogues are structured thematically; "Truth and Reality" is the theme structuring contributions by Marvin A. Sweeney (Claremont), Christine Helmer (Claremont), Christof Landmesser (Tubingen), Kristin De Troyer (Claremont), D.Z. Phillips (Claremont), and John S. Kloppenborg (Toronto). "Truth and History" is the focus of contributions by Tammi J. Schneider (Claremont), Lori Anne Ferrell (Claremont), and Anselm Kyongsuk Min (Claremont). The theme of "Truth and Religious Pluralism" is treated in contributions by Lieven Boeve (Louvain), Richard Amesbury (Valdosta) & H. Jong Kim (Claremont), Marjorie Suchocki (Claremont), and David Ray Griffin (Claremont).
