Book The Ranger His Wife

Download or read book The Ranger His Wife written by Dan W. Roberts and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Married life with the Texas Rangers on the old frontier Accounts of the lives of the Texas Rangers and of the early frontier days of the untamed American South-West are never less than fascinating. This special 'two-books-in-one' Leonaur edition is of particular interest because the authors whose works appear within it were a married couple. So the reader has the opportunity to view these essential accounts, which cover an identical time period and touch upon many of the same events, from two closely associated, but different perspectives. D. W Roberts, the Ranger, was born in Mississippi in 1841 though his father had come to Texas in 1836 taking part in the battles for the Republic and the Plum Creek Fight. Roberts was member of Company 'D' and saw much action on the Texas frontier of the post-Civil War period, taking part in his first Indian fight in 1873 at Deer Creek. Many more fights with the native Indian tribes of the region followed, though the rangers were also perpetually engaged in hunting down and bringing outlaws to summary justice including the infamous Sam Bass. Despite the unusual title of Roberts' book, all these experiences are recounted in riveting detail in these pages. Mrs. Roberts' work is, predictably, of a markedly more gentle and domestic nature. In her writings we learn of the life of a Ranger's bride, living in camps and of daily life on the frontier for a Ranger's wife in the latter half of the 19th century. Highly recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

The story: Susan, the wife of ranger Jim Clark has spent her whole life in the Maine woods. But Mrs. Clark never realized just how resourceful she could be until her husband went to work on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Tag along with our lady-of-the woods as she learns early on in life about deadheads only to discover that there are many dangerous things in the Maine woods and every one of them could instantly make her a widow."Behind every successful man is an amazing woman, and thank goodness Susan was there!" -- Ranger James Paul ClarkThis is the third book of a trilogy about Ranger James Clark. The first is Volume 6-SOLACE and the second is Volume 7-THE RANGER AND THE REPORTER. Relaxing on the porch of a remote log cabin, Susan Clark cradles a mug of tea. From out on lake a loon's primeval call expresses the loneliness she feels because husband Jim is away 'on river patrol.'Tonight the ranger's wife recalls that life in the woods began when very young. Such as the time her river-driver grandfather shrieked over the roar of an outboard motor, "Susan! I told you to watch for deadheads!" The five-year old froze on her seat and scanned the foaming water; terrified she'd see decapitated skulls bobbing like spoiled pumpkins. Then, again, years later when her husband transferred into the woods and the boss had warned-"If I were you Jim I wouldn't leave my wife alone without a handgun."The grandchild of a Penobscot River-driver and a grandmother-the first female cook for Great Northern Paper-Susan has spent a lifetime in the woods. But when she married wilderness Ranger James P. Clark, the lady entered a new realm. Living in Maine's northern forest, Susan soon learned that she needed to evaluate and adapt at a moment's notice. Physical demands are harsh, but how will she ever cope with the real life dangers that threaten her family? Sometimes it's ok to be alone. But then again-sometimes not!

Book Sisters and Lovers

Book excerpt: This rich ethnography in a rural village in North Bali illuminates the construction of desire by exploring cultural practices regarding courtship and marriage, motherhood, and connubial fidelity. The way these cornerstones of daily life are played out in the alternative arenas of tourism and illness highlight pervasive gender disparities in the expression of sexuality. By allowing key informants to tell their stories in their own voices and by skillfully interweaving fictionalized interludes, the author gives us not only a rigorously researched ethnography but an intimate and fully realized portrait of Balinese women's innermost desires.
