Download or read book The German Symphony between Beethoven and Brahms written by Christopher Fifield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Carl Dahlhaus who coined the phrase ’dead time’ to describe the state of the symphony between Schumann and Brahms. Christopher Fifield argues that many of the symphonies dismissed by Dahlhaus made worthy contributions to the genre. He traces the root of the problem further back to Beethoven’s ninth symphony, a work which then proceeded to intimidate symphonists who followed in its composer's footsteps, including Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann. In 1824 Beethoven set a standard that then had to rise in response to more demanding expectations from both audiences and the musical press. Christopher Fifield, who has a conductor’s intimacy with the repertory, looks in turn at the five decades between the mid-1820s and mid-1870s. He deals only with non-programmatic works, leaving the programme symphony to travel its own route to the symphonic poem. Composers who lead to Brahms (himself a reluctant symphonist until the age of 43 in 1876) are frequently dismissed as epigones of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schumann but by investigating their symphonies, Fifield reveals their respective brands of originality, even their own possible influence upon Brahms himself and in so doing, shines a light into a half-century of neglected nineteenth century German symphonic music.
Download or read book The Mechanical Muse The Piano Pianism and Piano Music c 1760 1850 written by Derek Carew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the piano's accession from musical curiosity to cultural icon, examining the instrument itself in its various guises as well as the music written for it. Both the piano and piano music were very much the product of the intellectual, cultural and social environments of the period and both were subject to many influences, directly and indirectly. These included character (individualism), the vernacular ('folk/popular') and creativity (improvisation), all of which are discussed generally and with respect to the music itself. Derek Carew surveys the most important pianistic genres of the period (variations, rondos, and so on), showing how these changed from their received forms into vehicles of Romantic expressiveness. The piano is also looked at in its role as an accompanying instrument. The Mechanical Muse will be of interest to anyone who loves the piano or the period, from the non-specialist to the music postgraduate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this book focuses on the once celebrated but now neglected musical journalism of Henry Forthergill Chorley. For nearly forty years he effectively used his acerbic pen and idiosyncratic critical judgments to celebrate the works of Rossini, Mendelssohn, Meyerbeer, Gounod and Sullivan, and to scorn those of Schumann , Verdi and Wagner. This book also discusses his friendships with literary figures such as Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Felicia Hemans, as well as his ongoing efforts to establish himself as a novelist as well as a journalist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dickens, Journalism, Music presents the first full analysis of the articles on music published in the two journals conducted by Charles Dickens, Household Words and its successor, All the Year Round. Robert Bledsoe examines the editorial influence of Dickens on articles written by a range of writers and what it reveals about his own developing attitude to music and its social role in parks, community singing groups, music halls and on the streets. The book also looks at the difference between the two journals and how the greater coverage of classical music and opera in All the Year Round reflects the increasing importance of music to Dickens in his later life.
