Scientists from a variety of disciplines, ranging from thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and electrical engineering to chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and visualization, worked together toward the overarching goal of SFB-TRR 75, to gain a deep physical understanding of fundamental droplet processes, especially those that occur under extreme ambient conditions. These are, for example, near critical thermodynamic conditions, processes at very low temperatures, under the influence of strong electric fields, or in situations with extreme gradients of boundary conditions. The fundamental understanding is a prerequisite for the prediction and optimisation of engineering systems with droplets and sprays, as well as for the prediction of droplet-related phenomena in nature. The book includes results from experimental investigations as well as new analytical and numerical descriptions on different spatial and temporal scales. The contents of the book have been organised according to methodological fundamentals, phenomena associated with free single drops, drop clusters and sprays, and drop and spray phenomena involving wall interactions.

Book excerpt: Droplet collision was simulated using two computational approaches, namely front tracking and molecular dynamics. By using the front tracking technique, the collision sequence in different collision regimes was simulated, the history of pressure and viscous dissipation within the droplet was spatially resolved, and the energy partition among the various modes was identified. By using the molecular dynamics method, bouncing and coalescence were successfully simulated for the first time without the artificial manipulation of the inter-droplet gaseous film. Several flame dynamics problems were also simulated, including flame-vortex interaction and flamefront instability in large-scale flows. In particular, it was found that wrinkling of a flame surface in the presence of a vortex is very much influenced by the Landau-Darrieus instability instead of the motion of the vortex itself, and that the wrinkling due to large-scale flows can suppress the formation of small-scale instabilities.

Book excerpt: Sprays are encountered regularly in many industrial and military applications including inkjets, cooling processes, evaporation processes, catalyzation, coatings, and propulsion chambers. Spray atomization phenomena of Newtonian fluids have received significant academic and industrial research attention, however, the effect of non-Newtonian rheologies on spray formation and downstream droplet behavior has not been as heavily investigated. The aim of this work is to elucidate the effect of non-Newtonian and viscoelastic rheological effects on droplet behavior in the context of secondary atomization and droplet collisions. This study utilizes finite volume computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to recreate droplet fluid physics in a numerical setting to a high accuracy. Droplet collision systems comprised of Newtonian, viscoelastic and shear-thinning rheologies are simulated using a Lagrangian moving-mesh interface tracking method (MMIT). This interface tracking approach provides increased surface curvature accuracy on relatively coarse meshes compared to many Eulerian multiphase methods. Modeling assumptions and interface mesh treatments are validated using existing analytical and experimental comparisons showing good agreement. Interpolation error due to cell deformation is minimized with local topological mesh adaptation and a global element quality optimization algorithm. The fully three dimensional computational study investigates the effect of these non-Newtonian and viscoelastic rheologies on a droplet collision. Here, simulated fluid ligaments exhibit increased stability with greater relative elasticity. By applying the similar simulation techniques to collisions of shear thinning droplets, a simple reduced order viscosity model has been produced, valid within a certain range of Weber number values. Another important atomization phenomenon, secondary breakup, is simulated using a volume of fluids (VOF) based interface capturing method applied to a centroid tracking moving mesh. Here, an axisymmetric CFD study of the wind induced break up of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian droplets is presented with comparisons with experimentally observed results. The numerical implementation is further verified by displaying accurate recreation of rapid micro-scale bubble collapse processes and subsequent jet ejection observed in controlled laboratory settings. The presented simulation results show capability in prediction of both the transient deformation morphology and the time scales in which droplet disintegration occurs.

Book excerpt: Although multiphase gas and liquid phenomena occurs widely in engineering problems, many aspects of multiphase interaction like within droplet dynamics are still not quantified. This study aims to qualify the Lattice Boltzmann (LBM) Interparticle Potential multiphase com- putational method in order to build a foundation for future multiphase research. This study consists of two overall sections. The first section in Chapter 2 focuses on understanding the LBM method and Interparti- cle Potential model. It outlines the LBM method and how it relates to macroscopic fluid dynamics. The standard form of LBM is obtained. The perturbation solution obtaining the Navier-Stokes equations from the LBM equation is presented. Finally, the Interparticle Potential model is incorporated into the numerical LBM method. The second section in Chapter 3 presents the verification and validation cases to confirm the behavior of the single-phase and multiphase LBM models. Experimental and analytical results are used briefly to compare with numerical results when possible using Poiseuille channel flow and flow over a cylinder. While presenting the numerical results, practical considerations like converting LBM scale variables to physical scale variables are considered. Multiphase results are verified using Laplaces law and artificial behaviors of the model are explored. In this study, a better understanding of the LBM method and Interparticle Potential model is gained. This allows the numerical method to be used for comparison with experimental results in the future and provides a better understanding of multiphase physics overall.

It is now possible to isolate atomic systems in traps, measure in coincidence the fragments of collision processes, routinely produce, and study multicharged ions. One can look at bulk matter in such a way that the fundamental atomic character is clearly evident and work has begun to tease out the properties of anti matter. The papers in this book reflect many aspects of modem Atomic Physics. They correspond to the invited talks at a conference dedicated to the study of "New Directions in Atomic Physics," which took place in Magdalene College, Cambridge in July of 1998. The meeting was designed as a way of taking stock of what has been achieved and, it was hoped, as a means of stimulating new research in new areas, along new lines. Consequently, an effort was made to touch on as many directions as we could in the four days of the meeting. We included some talks which overviewed whole subfields, as well as quite a large number of research contributions. There is a unity to Physics and we tried to avoid any artificial division between theory and experiment. We had roughly the same number of talks from those who are primarily concerned with making measurements, and from those who spend their lives trying to develop the theory to describe the experiments.
