Book International Politics and Inner Worlds

Download or read book International Politics and Inner Worlds written by Kurt Jacobsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes radical aim at the conventional conduct of international relations analysis. It reexamines the role of ideas, the usefulness of psychoanalysis, the rage for and at rational choice, the influence of the public on foreign policy, counterinsurgency evangelism, and development orthodoxies at the national and genetic levels. Drawing a bead on conceptual blind spots prevalent both inside and outside the academy, the book urges scholars to reflect on how inner worlds shape the actions of their subjects—and their own research analyses, as well.

Book Inter cives necnon peregrinos

Download or read book Inter cives necnon peregrinos written by Jan Hallebeek and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume are concerned with the Roman law of antiquity in its broadest sense, covering both private and public law from the Roman Republic to the Byzantine era, including legal papyrology. They also examine the reception of Roman law in Western Europe and its colonies (specifically the Dutch East Indies) from the Middle Ages to the promulgation of the German Bürgerliche Gesetzbuch in 1900. They reflect the wide interests of Professor Boudewijn Sirks, whom the volume honours on the occasion of his retirement and whose work and career have transcended frontiers and nations.

Book Astronomical Spectrographs and Their History

Download or read book Astronomical Spectrographs and Their History written by John Hearnshaw and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomical spectrographs analyse light emitted by the Sun, stars, galaxies and other objects in the Universe, and have been used in astronomy since the early nineteenth century. This book provides a comprehensive account of spectrographs from an historical perspective, from their theory and development over the last two hundred years, to the recent advances of the early twenty-first century. The author combines the theoretical principles behind astronomical spectrograph design with their historical development. Spectrographs of all types are considered, with prism, grating or grism dispersing elements. Included are Cassegrain, coudé, prime focus, échelle, fibre-fed, ultraviolet, nebular, objective prism, multi-object instruments and those which are ground-based, on rockets and balloons or in space. The book contains several tables listing the most significant instruments, around 900 references, and over 150 images, making it an indispensable reference for professional astronomers, graduate students, advanced amateur astronomers, and historians of science.

Book Experimental and Quasi Experimental Designs for Research

Download or read book Experimental and Quasi Experimental Designs for Research written by Donald T. Campbell and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We shall examine the validity of 16 experimental designs against 12 common threats to valid inference. By experiment we refer to that portion of research in which variables are manipulated and their effects upon other variables observed. It is well to distinguish the particular role of this chapter. It is not a chapter on experimental design in the Fisher (1925, 1935) tradition, in which an experimenter having complete mastery can schedule treatments and measurements for optimal statistical efficiency, with complexity of design emerging only from that goal of efficiency. Insofar as the designs discussed in the present chapter become complex, it is because of the intransigency of the environment: because, that is, of the experimenter’s lack of complete control.

Book Nonlinearity in Condensed Matter

Download or read book Nonlinearity in Condensed Matter written by Alan R. Bishop and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth Annual Conference of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at the Los Alamos National Laboratory was held May 5-9, 1986, on the topic "Nonlinearity in Condensed Matter: Lessons from the Past and Prospects for the Future. " As conference organizers, we felt that the study of non linear phenomena in condensed matter had matured to the point where it made sense to take stock of the numerous lessons to be learned from a variety of contexts where nonlinearity plays a fundamental role and to evaluate the prospects for the growth of this general discipline. The successful 1978 Oxford Symposium on nonlinear (soliton) struc ture and dynamics in condensed matter (Springer Ser. Solid-State Sci. , Vol. 8) was held at a time when the ubiquity of solitons was just begin ning to be appreciated by the condensed matter community; in subsequent years the soliton paradigm has provided a rather useful framework for in vestigating a large number of phenomena, particularly in low-dimensional systems. Nevertheless, we felt that the importance of nonlinearity in wider arenas than "solitonics" merited a significant expansion in the scope of the conference over that of the 1978 symposium. Indeed, many of the lessons are quite general and their potential for cross-fertilization of otherwise poorly connected disciplines was certainly one of the prime motivations for this conference. Thus, while these proceedings contain many contribu tions pertaining to soliton behavior in different contexts, the reader will find much more as well, particularly in the later chapters.

Book Stability of Functional Equations in Banach Algebras

Download or read book Stability of Functional Equations in Banach Algebras written by Yeol Je Cho and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most recent and significant results on homomorphisms and derivations in Banach algebras, quasi-Banach algebras, C*-algebras, C*-ternary algebras, non-Archimedean Banach algebras and multi-normed algebras are presented in this book. A brief introduction for functional equations and their stability is provided with historical remarks. Since the homomorphisms and derivations in Banach algebras are additive and R-linear or C-linear, the stability problems for additive functional equations and additive mappings are studied in detail. The latest results are discussed and examined in stability theory for new functional equations and functional inequalities in Banach algebras and C*-algebras, non-Archimedean Banach algebras, non-Archimedean C*-algebras, multi-Banach algebras and multi-C*-algebras. Graduate students with an understanding of operator theory, functional analysis, functional equations and analytic inequalities will find this book useful for furthering their understanding and discovering the latest results in mathematical analysis. Moreover, research mathematicians, physicists and engineers will benefit from the variety of old and new results, as well as theories and methods presented in this book.

Book Barrelled Locally Convex Spaces

Download or read book Barrelled Locally Convex Spaces written by P. Pérez Carreras and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-03-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a systematic treatment of barrelled spaces, and of structures in which barrelledness conditions are significant. It is a fairly self-contained study of the structural theory of those spaces, concentrating on the basic phenomena in the theory, and presenting a variety of functional-analytic techniques.Beginning with some basic and important results in different branches of Analysis, the volume deals with Baire spaces, presents a variety of techniques, and gives the necessary definitions, exploring conditions on discs to ensure that they are absorbed by the barrels of the space. The abstract theory of barrelled spaces is then presented, as well as local completeness and its applications to the inheritance of the Mackey topology to subspaces. Further discussed is the abstract study of bornological and ultrabornological spaces; B- and Br-completeness; inductive limits; strong barrelledness conditions; characterizations of barrelled, bornological and (DF)-spaces in the context of spaces of type C(X); the stability of barrelledness conditions of topological tensor products and the related questions of commutability of inductive limits and tensor products; and the holomorphically significant properties of locally convex spaces as developed by Nachbin and others.

Book Philosophical Ruminations Theosophical Illuminations

Download or read book Philosophical Ruminations Theosophical Illuminations written by John O'Loughlin and published by Centretruths Digital Media. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two 'posthumous' publications to John O'Loughlin's oeuvre-proper were culled, like the material of 'Opus Postscriptum', from two of his blogsites and contain material of an essayistic and aphoristic nature which has been extensively revised and reformatted to suit the parameters of e-book publication. There is a sense, though only a loose one, in which the first book corresponds to physics and the second, the so-called 'Theosophical Illuminations', to metaphysics; though that is more in the form than in the substance, since both books are equally radical and thoroughgoing in their approach to metaphysics and kindred subjects.
